TO SELECT OUT-OF-TOWN MAN Fifty Applicants Want Position of City School Superintendent. The proposition of securing a city superintendent for the public schools is causing the school board considerable anxiety. A local man will not be selected was the announcement made by members of the board this morning. T. A. Mott, present superintendent, will leave this city to take up the duties of city superintendent at Seymour probably within a few months. The duties of the new position will be taken up by Mr. Mott the latter part of August. There have been approximately fifty applicants for the position left vacant by the resignation of Mr. Mott. Because of other conflicting business the board has not been able to make a thorough investigation as to the ability or merits of several applicants. The new officials will be selected within a week or ten days. Several prominent Indiana educators are being considered more seriously than any others. The members of the board realize that the selection will be one of the most important duties to come before them. ! Y. 31. C. A. NOTES There will be a basket ball game between members of the Bible class at the Y. M. C. A. gymnasium Saturday evening. The contestants will be under two classifications. . The "light weights" will consist of those weighing under one-hundred and the "heavy weights" between one-hundred and one-hundred thirty-five pounds. Roy J. Horton, physical director of the Y. M. C. A. has received a flattering offer from the Indianapolis Y. M. C. A. CHIEF WOULD MAKE RICHMOND FIRELESS There have been sixty fire alarms since January 1, according to the records of the Are chief. None of the fires have been of any consequence and the extent of the damages in nearly every case was less than the cost of making the run by the fire department. The people are urged by the fire chief to co-operate with the officials and help improve fire conditions which are already better than in most cities the size of Richmond. The people are especially urged to clean their cellars from debris which might cause a conflagration. During cleaning-up week an appeal will be made to the merchants of the city to clean their cellars from all paper boxes, excelsior or tissue paper which is not properly boxed. Every effort will be made to keep Richmond the "Fire Less" city. For the past few years there has been fewer large fires in proportion to the size of the city than any other city in the state. f FIELD MICE IN FRANCE. At Times They Overrun and Completely Devastate Whole Cantons. The average loss inflicted annually by field mice upon the cultivators of France is estimated at 2,000,000 francs -bout $400,000. From time to time. wever. there Is an enormous increase n the number of these pests and in the extent of their ravages. France has experienced about a dozen serious invasions by field mice since the beginning of the nineteenth century. The most disastrous was that which occurred from the summer of 1801 to the end of the autumn of 1802. On that occasion three departments were absolutely devastated. As an illustration of the prodigious numbers in which these animals appear It may be stated that, during the outbreak of 1822 in Alsaco. within a single fortjiiht 1. 570.000 were slaughtered in one -.mton the French equivalent of a towuship 000.000 In another and 272.DON'T GET MONEY THROUGH CUNNING (National News Association WASHINGTON. April 16. People should be restrained by law from making money through cunning, said Rep. Sisson of Mississippi, in an address before the United States college of veterinary surgeons here. Material service to the world is more important than accumulating fortunes, he asserted.

SPORTING NOTES
PHILADELPHIA, April 17 Pugilists who were enthusiastically calling Luther McCarty a "chess champion" are not quite so enthusiastic about it today. McCarty battered Jim Flynn, the Pueblo fireman, almost at will, in their six round battle here last night. Flynn is much smaller than McCarty and the result was forcasted, but it was seen during the bout that McCarty did not full extend himself. There was much to indicate that he has a terrific wallop in either hand and has considerable science. Prior to the McCarty-Flynn mix-up, Joe Jeannett and G-eorge Cotton, ebony hued gentlement, mixed it for four rounds; "Young Al" Kauffman, McCarty's sparring partner, knocked out Al Benedict of New York; Frank Moran of Pittsburg, shaded Sailor White in six rounds and Jim Savage of New York, earned the decision over Tim Logan of Philadelphia, in a whirlwind six round affair. PITTSBURGH, April 17 Honus Wagner, the Pirates star shortstop returned from Youngstown, Ohio, today where he paid a second visit to Bonesetter Reese. Wagner hurt his knee during the training season and the injury has not responded to treatment. It was believed he would not be out for some time yet. PATERSON, N. J., April 17. Howard P. Drewm. the negro schoolboy of Springfield, Mass., established a world's indoor record for sixty yards last night when he ran the distance in 6 1-5 seconds, clipping one fifth of a second from the old mark. AUGUSTA, Ga., April 17. Ty Cobb, hold-out Detroit outfielder, today ! answered the statement issued yesterj day by President Navin in which the j latter said the controversy with Cobb at present was not so much of Cobb's salary demands, but that giving it to Cobb would be a detriment to discipline. "It seems that Navin has shifted around in his position" said Cobb. "For several weeks past it has been a matter of money Navin not being able to pay me what I asked. Navin offered me a contract that called for the same figures as last year. He made me no other offer and in this connection I wish to state I am not the best paid ball player in the world. "Regarding my failure to report for spring practice, I wish to say that it was because of Navin's orders pgainst it. He positively told me not to report, because I was regarded as a holdout. Had I reported, I would have had to pay my expenses. But I did the fairest thing possible I kept myself in condition and in readiness to respond at a moment's notice." SPOKANE, Wash., April 17. NO, MAN WAS NOT CRAZY JUST DRUNK On the complaint of residents of South Ninth street, A. D. Marshall was arrested this morning for public intoxication. Women claim that he was acting peculiarly and said they believed that he was crazy. Patrolman Vogelsong made an investigation and found the man at Twelfth and South G streets. He will be tried in police court this morning. "I'm not crazy," he said when arrested. WILLIAMS TO HAVE SERVICE SATURDAY
One of the notable features of the Williams meetings now in progress at the First Baptist church is the large number of members of other churches who are taking advantage of the opportunity to attend the meetings. The subject last night was "Our Estimate of Great Men." "Our estimate of men." the evangelist said, "is I according to what we know of them. Many men truly great are not estimated very highly by us because of our ignorance of their real worth." He took the question. "What think ye of Christ?" as suggesting men's estimate of Jesus Christ. "To some." he said. t "Jesus means very little, to others. he means the great Teacher, and to others, the great Physician, for many
