OBITUARY OF MISS CLARA NEWBERN. Clara E. Newbern, daughter of the late William and Susanna Newbern, was born near Whitewater, Wayne county, Indiana, on September 30, 1864, and died at Columbus, Ohio, on April 5, 1913, aged 48 years, 6 months and 6 days. Of the immediate family one brother, William, and one sister, Julia Alice, have preceded her to the life beyond. There survives her to mourn her departure three brothers and four sisters. These are, John Newbern, of California; OIlie Newbern, Campbellstown, Ohio ; Jteorge Newbern, Richmond, Indiana; Martha E. Barton, New Paris, Ohio; Mary J. Duffee, Columbus, Ohio; Adeline Marshal, Whitewater, Ind., and Amanda Sieweke, Eaton, Ohio. Her earliest church affiliations were assumed when she was yet a girl, and she always retained for her church where first her membership was, a very warm regard, this being the church from which she is to be laid to rest, although in later years her membership was with the Christian church at Richmond, Ind. Respecting her Christian life only words of praise may be uttered, for she maintained a steadfast, consistent Christian life, unswerving In her loyalty and devotion to her Lord, and now in going has fallen asleep in a confident expectation of a blessed immortality. Approximately for thirty years she made her home with the late John G. Townsend. The greater part of that time was spent in the home at the edge of Chester, but for the closing months of his life, his home was made in Richmond, Indiana. She was ever mindful of his needs, and cared for him with the devotion of a daughter. That home was broken up last year through the decease of Mr. Townsend. Soon thereafter Clara passed through a siege of typhoid fever. This she survived fairly well and It was hoped that it would only be a question of time until she would have regained her strength. In the hope of this, and In quest of that health she went on December 19th of last year to stay for a time with her sister, Mrs. Mary J. Duffee, of Columbus, Ohio. But her already weakened condition invited a collapse, and with that came other complications of a serious sort which led on to the necessity or surgical treatment, from the shock of which she did not recover. And so she has gone just at a time when life's "morning touches noon, and while the shadows still were falling toward the west. She had juet passed on life's highway the stone that marks its highest point; but being weary for the moment, she laid down by the wayside, and using her burden for a pillow, fell into that dreamless sleep that kisses down her eyelids still. While yet enraptured with the world and in love -with life she has quitted their scenes and passed into the Father's home. No time for a last farewell. No time for the shock of Tear, Scarcely a moment's halt on the shore, With the guide and the boatman near. Only a moment of dark, A dream of the fleeting night, And then the beautiful break of day, And the quiet peace of light. And you found yourself where you long to stand, In the repose of the fatherland.
