THE RICHMOND PALLADIUM AND SUN-TELEGRAM, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 1913
NOTHING DOING" IS ANSWER SENT Appeal of Club For Assistance For Ohio Cities Disregarded. NO FUNDS FROM U. S. Senator Kern Wires Swayne That Red Cross Has Much Money. The announcement that the flooded districts of Onto and Indiana would not receive one cent from the United States Government was received with great surprise in this city. The announcement to this effect was made by Representative Fitzgerald, chairman of the appropriation committee, who holds the purse strings of the U. S. treasury. . Monday -night President Swayne wired Senators Kern and Shively and Representative Finly Gray asking that an appropriation, be made to help the homeless people of the flooded districts. The directors of the Commer- - cial club, who- unanimously indorsed the motion to send the telegram, believed the national government would at least make provision for persons who are destitute and without funds. If nothing more could be done it was believed the U. S. congress would restore their homes. Fitzgerald's Opinion. Fitzgerald said he did not understand why the states of Indiana and Ohio should ask the federal government to make provisions for the inhabitants of these states. "The states are rich and capable of caring for their people, he said. He further stated that the floods were over and in the future provisions would be made to prevent a repetition of what has already happened. He believes the work is being carefully handled by competent relief committees. Vice-president Marshall yesterday stated he, would make provisions to have an army engineer sent to Brookville, Ind., to draw up plans or make recommendations for guarding against future floods. Secretary of War Garrison has been swamped with appeals from all parts of the flooded districts asking that engineers be sent to give advice relative to making repairs to insure against future floods. Senator Kern Wires. Word has been received by President Swayne from Senator Kern that the Red Cross society has a large unexpended balance which could be partially devoted to the relief of the sufferers. Members of the Richmond Commercial Club are not disheartened at the statements of Fitzgerald and it is believed he . can. be influenced to change his stand. "If he could only see conditions as we have seen them he would not take the attitude he has," said a member of the local relief committe. . FLASHES FROM OTHER CITIES. PRINCETON The City Council has Instructed the city attorney to file complaints against every utilities corporation operating in the city under the new utilities act. .MITCHELL This town, which recently voted "wet" will remain "dry." Previous to the election a remonstrance had been filed with the county commissioners and at a hearing it was upheld. MITCHELL The first passenger train on the B. & O. S. W. since the flood will be run through to Washington, Wednesday. COLUMBUS The Bartholomew County Council has appropriated 135,000 to repair bridges and roads. COLUMBUS Harry Meyers, former city councilman, has been missing from home a week and friends fear foul play. He was last seen en route to Indianapolis to purchase supplies. CHILDREN IN OHIO TOWNS TO RECEIVE TOYS FROM PUPILS
The' children 'of Vaile school on South Fourteenth street deserve great credit for their generous response to the suggestions made to them that they bring toys to the school to give to the children of Dayton and Hamilton, whose toys were lost in the floods. The school children have gathered dolls and all kinds of toys which will gladden the hearts of the children of the stricken cities who receive them. It is probable that other schools of the city will follow the example of the children of the Vaile school, many of whom sacrificed little treasures which they had received from Santa Claus, or which had other fond memories connected with them making them especially precious to their owners. their buggy. ENUMERATION TO BE STARTEDJOMORROW Housewives in the City and County Requested to Answer Questions.
NAMES OF CHILDREN In Addition to This Enumerators Must Get Veterans' Names. i The members of the school board wish to assure the mothers of Richmond that the man who bothers them with personal questions such as, "how many children have you" is an employe of the county, temporarily, at least, and is not asking the questions out of mere curiosity. Many times the men are forced to contend with such embarrassing incidents as that of having the doors slammed in their faces. Housewives are liable to the extent of a fine of $5 for refusing to give the desired information. For every child in Wayne county which is unrecorded by the census takers the county loses $5 from the state treasury. As the money turned into the treasury from Wayne county is far greater than the amount received, an effort will be made to get the name of every person between the ages of 6 and 21 years. The men who were appointed by the school board to work out the enumeration in this city are Richard Moore, Richard Study, George Bishop and two others to be appointed late this afternoon. Those appointed to do the work in the township are Thomas F. Swain and Charles Crawford. The work will start tomorrow and must be completed by April 30. In addition to obtaining the names and ages of children between the ages of from 6 to 21, a census of the Civil and Spanish American War veterans will be made. HOSPITAL TRUSTEES TO MEET TONIGHT The board of trustees of the Reid Memorial Hospital will hold its monthly meeting m the office of John L. Rupe in the Second National Bank building tonight. Routine business will be conducted. ABLE WAS MAROONED Jacob Able, prominent in this city, returned from Cincinnati, where he has been marooned in a house in Fairview, for four days. The high water of the Ohio river kept the family with whom Able was visiting a prisoner for several days.

GOVERNMENT WILL SELL TIMBER LAUD Department of Agriculture Has 70 Million Feet of Tract.
(National News Association) WASHINGTON. April 9. The De partment of Agricutlure has begun advertising two large tracts of timber which aggregate T50 million feet on the Payette River within the Boise and Payette National Forests, Idaho. The district Forester at Ogden, Utah, will receive bids up to and including June 1, 1913, and for an additional month if intending purchasers wish more time to examine the timber before deciding on their bids. While the bids received through competition will determine the rate at which the timber will be sold, the Department, as the result of a careful study, has placed a minimum price which will be considered on the timber, according to species and situation. These prices range from $2.50 a thousand feet for western yellow pine in the most accessible places, down to ; $1.00 for the least valuable and least j accessible timber. The initial rates will be subject to readjustment in 1918 and in 1922. By such readjustment the stumpage price may be modified twice at four-year intervals during the twelve years which will be allowed for the removal of the timber. j The department officials point out Btrong, healthy condition, so they can filter the blood and keep you well. If you suffer with backache have pains in the neck or sides nervous or dizzy spells a few doses of Croxone will relieve the congestion and you will be surprised how quickly all kidney, bladder and rheumatic troubles will disappear. Croxone is different from all other remedies. It is not like anything else on earth ever used for the purpose. It starts to work the minute you take it and relieves your suffering the very first time you use it. It is so prepared that it is practically impossible to take it into the human system without results. Tou can secure an original package of Croxone at trifling cost from any first-class druggist. All druggists are authorised to personally return the purchase price if Croxone should fail in a single case.

that, in sales of such a large quantity of timber, it is necessary to allow a long term contract because of the magnitude of operation and investment. The fact that many large sales have been made with readjustment clauses indicates, it is held, that timber operators find the method businesslike and practicable. " The timber to be cut lies on the watersheds of the South and Middle Forks of the Payette, and bids will be received for any or all of the timber on either fork. It is accessible to southern Idaho, which is developing rapidly and in which the demand for timber ill increase.
