Systejn of the Islands 5 : ' On Its Feet. 'J - - s APPROACH STANDARD Considerable Knowledge Now Crammed Down the Peruvians. Is INDIANAPOLIS. March 28. School-master-to nations! That's Harry Erwin Bard, the Indiana man who put tbe school system of the Philippine islands on its feet. When he went to the Island home there wasn't much of an educational system in rogue in that sunny clime. Teachers were acarcer'n hen's teeth and the kids were playing pelota or training game ocks. Now they're the most rabid base ball fans In captivity and the rest of the school system is rapidly approaching the highest American standsard. "It runs through my head." said Minister of Education Villaran, of Peru, "that a fellow who can put education into the Filipinos can do the same to us." And be offered the job to Prof. Bard. Now anybody who knows South American in general and peru in particular,, knows full well that it Is easier to draw blood out of a turnip of the average Peruvian. If it could be fed to him in sugar coated pills or by hypodermic Injections your Peruvian would 'fall for the three R.'s. But when he has to work for it well, it 1b some tough educating that fellow. But hard as that was. it wasn't the worst proposition Prof. Bard had to (face. Not being so intimately acquainted with the Peruvian disposition as he might have been. Prof. Bard signed up for three years with this Villaran person and sailed for lima. But while he was sailing, those Peruvian hotheads were revolting and Prof. Bard, got a beautiful back view of Dr. Villaran keeping a hurry up , date in Europe. The new government didn't hanker so much for an educational system. They allowed as how they'd pay the professor's salary all right, but the less he bothered them about education the better off he'd be. But that wasn't what the schoolmaster came down for and he pitched in on the new administration and in eight months' time got them to the point multiplication tame oir nis nana. Tnen another revolution put the old gagn Into office and the professor started 11 over again. Taught Between Revolutions. . Between revolutions he has managed to cram considerable knowledge down the Peruvian. The kids have ot real benches to sit on, while the; politicians axe getting lees spending money than they got before. And he ' lis giving the country a complete, up-! to-date edueatlonal system that any nation might be proud of. The HooeBer schoolmaster's phenominal success ' "with the Filipino and Peruvian encouraged the late Madero government (to entertain hops of elevating the "Mexican education system with Prof. Bard's help. Huerta and Felix Diaz . are trying to borrow money "to build-1 ,000 new- school houses." Whether ' they are really anxious to educate the ; peons' children remains to be seen. However, if Prof. Bard tackles the Job, Mexico will get a thoroughly modern system of education. The "schoolmaster to nations" was born, 45 years ago at Wingate, Ind. He is a graduate of Wabash college and Columbia university. Before he went toi the Philippines he was principal ofthe Adams collegiate institute, Adams,1 N. T. He is now in Paris, planning ,f further campaign to educate nations. : , j Barely Rimtmbini j T suppose your late uncle didn't fall" tc remember you in his will," said the sympathetic friend. MASTERPIECE FOUND Paris Bookseller Discovers Five Copies. PARIS. March 28. An interesting literary mystery which has baffled students for over a century has Just been cleared up through the discovery by a Paris bookseller of a batch of five copies, the only ones known, of "Alvar," the lost masterpiece of Aimee de Coigny, duchessee de Fleury, who was Andre Chelner's "grand e passion." Ever since her death, in 1820, it has been known that Aimee de Coigny, while awaiting her turn for the guillotine at Saint-Lazare prison wrote a novel of this name, but no copy of this book has been seen since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Only twentylive copies were printed for distribution among friends, and Etelnne Lamy the well-known academician, who edited La Coigny's memoirs a few years ago, declared in his notes that the book had disappeared. A few days ago, however, a chateau formerly the property of the Coigny family was sold and one of the leading booksellers who went to examine the library discovered there five copies of "Alvar" uncut, and just as when it left theprinter's hands. The news has created a sensation among blbliophies, who are eagerly competing for the purchase of these copies, as well as literary circles, which are asking that the book be reprinted without delay. Its contents are stated to be of a very remarkable quality, placing it among the principal works of the revolutionary period. Changing a Nam. How a patronymic may be transformed out of all recognition Is shown by an instance quoted by Cosmo Innee In his work on suraames: 'James Halfpenny, a Dublin citlaen, throve in trade, and his children induced him in bis later years to change the name, which they, regarded as undignified. This he did chiefly by dropping the last letters. Be was buried as James Halpea. The fertune of the family did not recede, and his son aftet renouncing retail dealing looked about for a euphonious name. He made no scruple ef dropping the unnecessary "h." and. that being done. It was easy to go in for the Celtic rage, which Walter Scott had Just raised to a greet ! height Consequently he who had run the streets as little Kenny Halfpenny came out at the assemblies of the day as Kenneth MeAlpha." Tom Thumb and the Iron Duke. The Duke of Wellington called frequently to sea the little general at hla public levees. The first time he called the general was personating Napoleon Bona parte, marching up and down the platform and apparently taking snuff In deep meditation. He was dressed in the well known uniform of the emperor. I Introduced him to the Iron Duke, who inquired the subject "of his meditations. "I was thinking of the loss of the batt!e of Waterloo," was the little general's immediate reply. P. T. Barsum's Life. FIREFLIES IN JAPAN.
Large and Brilliant and Numerous and Not Afraid of Man. In Japan fireflies are more than mere beetles. They are Cupid's light to guide lovers, souls of ancient soldiers, the devil's snare to tempt wanderers to death. In tbelr light of magic gold with a tint of emerald green the Japanese see stars of hope, sorrows of broken hearts, the everlasting spirits of warriors, but, most of all, the joys of love and lovers. Whenever they see the glimmering faint green light of fireflies hoveiinj: over the stream running into the darkness of night the Japanese dream of love and loving hearts. The light of fireflies is the guide of lovers soinj along the narrow paths to meet their sweethearts. The Japanese fireflies are much larger and give brighter and mere steady light than those seen in Enrop or America. In old days many poor Japanese students, unable to buy candles, were wont to gather fireflies in a bag and read tbelr books by their light The Hotaru kago (firefly cage), made of fine laces, placed on the veranda gives almost as bright a light as the large stone lantern, bat much more quaint and dreamy. Fireflies are plentiful everywhere In Japan. They are not at all afraid of humaa beings and will often alight upon the dress and even n the hair or hands. It is not seldom that fireflies fly Into one's pockets or sleeves.Mock Joy a In Strand. A Good Excuse.
