DR. FRIEDMAN N IS MUCH ENCOURAGED NEW YORK, March 26. "I feel greatly encouraged over the results attained from the turtle bacilli treatment here," said Dr. Friedmann today. The German physician Bpoke through one of his associates, Dr. Maurice Sturm. Dr. Friedmann was In a cheerful mood, partly due to the apparent improvement in the cases of seven of his patients at Bollevue Hospital as demonstrated when they walked into the room where Saturday the doctor inoculated 2.1 more sufferers. "For a time it looked as though a stubborn prejudice had arisen against me," the physician went on. "It needed some visual demonstration to turn the tide. Now I am satisfied that the people here are giving me a fair trial. That is all, I have asked. I expect to prove to them the efficacy of the cure," he concluded,' his face beaming with a smile. On. Friedmann waved, aside a criticism' of Dr. Karl Von Guck, Ashville, N. C., a specialist in tuberculosis treatment, who was quoted in a medical journal as saying that the Friedmann culture is not permanently effective. Mere mental tranquility will not effect a cure, while the turtle bacilli will.". " "They want to know how I do it how I get the serum and all about it," eaid the doctor. For the present I want to work it out myself." ABANDONED INFANTS. The "Baby Post" Once Did a Rushing Business In England. There once flourished In England a regular "baby post." the rates of postage being fixed on a strictly business basis, according to distances traversed. The curious institution came into existence in connection with the foundling hospital In Guildford street When tuts - .charity was first established It was understood that its operations riu Id be confined to London and Its environs. But the people of the country towns and villages heard of it and showed a decided disposition to share in its advantages; hence the "baby post!" All oVer the country there were men and women who entered vigorously into l be business of carrying children to London ' and depositing them at the gates of the foundling hospital. The charge was 8 guineas from distant localities like York and Monmouth, down to a guinea from places situated within thirty to fifty miles of the metropolis. The unfortunate Infants were borue On horseback In panniers, two to each pannier, or in wagons lined with straw, for which the charge was somewhat less. Naturally abuses grew up in connection with the traffic. But even apart from them, the mortality among the "posted" babies was terrible. Thus, out of 14.034 received at the hospital in four years, only 4,400 lived to be "apprenticed out," being a mortality of more than 70 per cent. Eventually parliament passed a measure abolishing the practice, ami the "baby post" ceased. The Band Boys will give a musical concert, consisting of vocal and instrumental music and also a supper at Laurel Hall, Saturday evening, 29th inst. Miss Irene Sourbeer of Richmond visited with her parents over Sunday. A few neighbors and friends gave a birthday surprise for Mrs. William Hinshaw at their country home west of town Friday evening. The evening was spent in games and music.
