NIGHT BELL HAS ITS ADVANTAGES

A local jeweller has found that a gratifying revenue comes to him as a result of a night bell button on his door. ' "What emergency calls can a jeweller have?" he was asked. "Do you cater to the elopement trade in wedding rings ?" "Not at all," was the answer. "I'm called up at all times of night to file oft pieces of jewelry. I take rings from fingers where they are stopping the circulation. I file away necklaces that are binding so tightly that the wearers can scarcely breathe. Bracelets often have to be taken from swollen arms. "The doctors in my neighborhood know about my being ready for emergency calls and' whenever any one goes to them to have a piece of jewelry taken off by the use of tools they send the sufferers to me."

.... Jet. Jet, that substance from which many articles of ornament are made, very closely resembles ordinary coal. It to formed, like oal, from wood and vegetable matter. It differs from coal in that it contains a much smaller Quantity of earthly imparities. There is soft Jet and hard Jet but only the latter is of much use In the making of ornamental articles.

RETURNS HOME A WEALTHY MAN

LAPORTE, Ind., March 24. "When I return I will be the possessor of a fortune," was the message left by Ambrose VonOsinski when he left home twenty years ago yesterday. Dr. Joseph VonOsinski was reunited with his son after the twenty years of absence, during which time the father had become reconciled to the belief that his son was dead. The boy, true to his boast returned wealthy, having acquired a large interest in an African diamond mine. He left his home when he was 16 years old.

RAILROAD NOTES

A new block signal system on the G. R. and I. was put into service recently. The inauguration of the newsystem did not come as soon as was expected due to the delay in giving the agents and operators complete instructions on the workings of the new system. All trains have now to receive the "block" before passing a station.

EDUCATIONAL NOTES

"The greatest waste in education is not bad teaching," said a speaker at the recent meeting of school superintendents, "but teaching things the twentieth century does not need."

High-school enrollment In South Carolina haB risen from 4,812 to 8,902 in the past 6 years, and the amount paid for salaries of high-school teachers has more than doubled in the same period.

Cincinnati has tried compulsory vocational training and is well satisfied with the result. The boys and girls did not like it at first, apparently becausa of the compulsory feature, but now seem to take to it with enthusiasm. The school authorities have had the hearty co-operation of the manufacturers in the work.

The school system of Boise City, Idaho, was recently reorganized on the basis of a careful survey of the city's needs made by a committee of educational experts. So well satisfied were the people of the city that a number of them came to Superintendent Meek and offered him 160 to 300 acres of land and a half million dollars if he would go further and develop the local high school into an industrial city college.

Mississippi has buITF 27 county agricultural high schools in the past two years at an average cost of $30,000 per school. These schools furnish board and dormitory facilities for $5.50 per month, and the boys and girls are paid a certain amount per hour for the work they do, so that in most cases the expense to the pupil is reduced to about $3 per month.

More than a million people took advantage of the "educational trains" sent through the rural districts last year by the state agricultural colleges of 31 states, according to figures compiled by F. B. Jenks, of the United States Bureau of Education. In this way the colleges have brought knowledge of improved methods of farming home to many who would probably nevei" have been reached in any other way. The educational train usually consists of 3 to 10 coaches, well supplied with exhibits and demonstration apparatus, and in charge of practical men who can talk interestingly on the farmer's real problems. The stops made by these trains range from two hours to half a day. Four state colleges those in Texas, California, Louisiana and Oklahoma report attendance at the stops of these educational trains of a hundred thousand or more during the season. The Oklahoma institution takes the opportunity to attach to the train a car containing moving picture views of college activities, thus cleverly attracting the attention of the farm boy to the possibilities of an education at the state college.

To Make Glass Tough. The brittleness of glass is due to the quick cooling of the hot substance. It Is known that constant motion tends to rearrange the molecule in any substance, and a similar effect Is observed when glass is boiled in a weak solution of salt In water and allowed to cool gradually. The toughness of the glass Is increased very much, and the effect of quick heating is less disastrous to it. This is ear applied to articles such as glass globes for lighting purposes and prevents much breakage.
