DIVORCE SECURED AFTER HARDSHIPS Cobbler Made Two Trips to Canada to Assist His Sister.
PAID FOR MARRIAGE Austrian Says He Had Trouble in Geting Across the Line. Following an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Canadian border to release his sister from the bonds of matrimonial affiliation, Sam Baren, Austrian, and cobbler located at 18 South Eighth street, finally secured passports a few days ago and after bringing the couple Into America sesecured a divorce for his sister in the courts at Detroit. Earen's sister obtained a license In Austria and according to the exotic custom was obliged to bestow upon her newly acquired lord and master the neat sum of $400. Baren sent the money to his sister to clinch the marriage. Sometime afterward the couple moved to Canada. They sailed the smooth seas of domestic joy for several months, when, one day, Daren's brother-in-law returned home in an intoxicated condition and heaped abuse upon his wife. Baren received letter after letter from his sister asking him to come to Canada and assist in untying the matrimonial bonds. He made an attempt to comply with her request in December last year but was unsuccessful in his attempt to cross the Canadian border. He returned to Richmond and a few days ago made the second attempt. Baren has difficulty in understanding the English language and according to his story, he had many trials and hardships. After securing- the papers here, he was then obliged to have his sister examined before she with her husband were allowed into Detroit. Baren's trunks and other belongings were locked up in the office of the medical examiner and he also was forced to submit to an examination before procuring bis paraphernalia. The divorce was obtained without much difficulty and Baren returned to this city with his sister. She was given an alimony of $116. Baren and his sister returned to this city yesterday afternoon.
