Smarting under yesterday's 4 to 3 defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh
Pirates, in the first game of the nine
game series the Boston Red Sox are
resolved today to retaliate and "Smoky Joe" Wood, the world's series star, was slated as 'the twirler who would turn
the trick.
MADISON. . Wis., March 18. Be
cause the faculty does not favor long
trips for its athletic teams the invitation of the U. S. military academy for a football game at West Point will
probably be declined. .Members of the
team are much disappointed over the
attitude of the faculty.
Hoppe'a recent defeat of Harry Cline at Philadelphia with an average of better than 21 and running out the game with 140 points unfinished,
shows what kind of fettle the 18.2 champion is in while Morningstar's
work in Harry Davis room at Pittsburgh, is even more praiseworthy. Ora is crediated with one run of 201, which when it is remembered that the late Frank Ives' record of 140 still
stands, is some feat.
Hoppe, perhaps a bit selfish, is bent
on holding both titles, but he will find
Morningstar a harder proposition than Sutton. Ora has nerve of steel and
he is never beaten until the other fellow gets his last point. He will fight
like a demon both for the retention of his crown and the 1,000 stakes and
William must be at his best to conquer
the veteran. Morningstar will never
see 38, while Hoppe is about 25 years old. William, however, has had really
more match and tournament experience than Ora and will be at no dis
advantage owing to his youthfulness.
No matter who wins at Pittsburgh, the victor will have a merry time keeping his newly won honors, as at least three other players in the country are fairly thirsting for a chance to play for the championship and challenges will be flying thick and fast as soon as the result is made known. These three are George F. Slosson, Calvin Demarest and George Sutton.
