SCHOOLS HERE WILL OBSERVE ARBOR DAY Mott Says Special Exercises Will Be Held At All Buildings.
MAY PLANT SHRUBS Appropriate Songs, Speaking ; And Readings Will Be Given. Arbor day, April 4, will be observed in the grade school of the city, arrangements having been made by Superintendent T. A. Mott for special exercises to be held Arbor day morning on the grounds at the various buildings. As yet, no arrangements have been made for exercises at the high school. According to the enactment of a law by the recent legislature the first Friday In April is set aside as Arbor day. This act requires the observance of the day In all the public schools of the state and is a step toward the conservation of forests now being widely advocated throughout the country by both national and state departments. Supt. Mott stated that complete arrangements have not been made for the programs which will be carried out in the various schools. Appropriate songs, declamations and readings will be given by the pupils. Mr. Mott has also arranged for procuring seeds ' and bulbs for the children to plant in the school yards. Principal John Thompson of the high school has not made any arrangements for exercises for the high school students. It is probable that high school will dismiss April 4 as many of the teachers will attend a state teachers convention which will be held in Indianapolis on that day. It has -. been suggested that the school children plant trees in the school yards and christen them by the name of any prominent man who they decide. No steps have been made towards carrying out this suggestion, as yet. All details lor tne Arbor day programs will be made next week. No definite arrangements have been jnade for the observance of the day in the county schools. Some of the schools will have adjourned for the summer before that time but it is expected that those which will be in session will hold special exercises. It has been the custom in the county schools to plant trees and shrubs in past years. - Last year Charles Warren Fairbanks and Dr. Stanley Coulter, dean of the science department of Purdue, addressed school students on Arbor Day. Farmer in Constant Watch for the Arrival of Chinch-Bugs in the Fields
BY J. TROOP. (Entomologist Purdue.) It is hoped that the farmers of this state may not see another such outbreak of the chinch bugs, in many years, as occurred some twelve or fifteen years ago; and yet they are liable to occur at any time, whenever the weather conditions prove favorable;" and that,' of course, is one of m the things over which we have no con trol. This insect is present in Indiana fields every year to a greater or less extent, and so it stands the farmer in hand to be constantly on the watch for it. : In southwestern Illinois, in 1911 and' 1912, the ' chinch-bugs were so numerous that thousands of acres of ! corn were destroyed, and thousands of acres more would have been de- j stroyed, had not heroic measures been adopted by the entomologists of the University in cooperation with the farmers. It is not a difficult matter to find these insects now in our fields and it only needs favorable conditions this spring for them to develop in great numbers. Place Among Insects. The chinch-bugs (Blissus leucopterus,' Say) belongs to the order Hemiptera, or sucking insects. Its family (Lygaeidae) is one of the largest families of the order, comprising, a good many species of rather small individuals. This is one of the smallest, being only about one-sixth of an Inch long in the adult stage. However, in spite of its small size, it has been estimated by the United States Entomologist, that it causes an annual loss in this country of $20,000,000.00. In fact, it ,jnay well be classed as the worst insect enemy to wheat, oats and corn, known to the farmers of the Mississippi valley. It is found in narly all parts of the United States, and in the corn-growing sections of Canada as well, but the greatest dam dissolves by the heat of the nostrils; penetrates and heals the inflamed, swollen membrane which lines the nose, head and throat; clears the air passages; stops nasty discharges and a feeling of cleansing, soothing relief comes immediately. Don't lay awake tonight struggling for breath, with the head stuffed; nostrils closed, hawking and blowing. Catarrh or a cold, with its running nose, foul mucous dropping into the throat, and raw dryness is distressing but truly needless. Put your faith just once in " Ely's Cream Balm" and your cold or catarrh will surely disappear.

age is done in the corn-belt of the United States. As the bug is so small and lives, for the most part, so near the ground, it usually escapes detection except when it occurs in great numbers. The adult is black Avith white markings on the wings, which makes it easy to determine. The young bugs are reddish in color, gradually getting darker as they approach maturity. Unlike the moths and butterflies, which are injurious only in the larval stage, these are injurious to plants from the time
