PROTEST IGNORED. INDIANAPOLIS, March 6. After Rep. Cravens had made a big howl about too much of the legislature's lime being spent on measures increasing the salaries of Indianapolis and Lake county officials the house today 55 to 33, passed Senator Sullivan's bill increasing the salary of the auditor of Marion county from $12,500 to $18,000 annually. Considerable time was consumed in discussion of the bill aiming to reduce the number of holidays on which saloons must be closed but the bill failed to pass because of the lack of a constitutional majority. Rep. Hughes bill requiring all motorboat exhausts to be muffled and placing a speed limit of ten miles an hour between sunset and sunrise received unanimous indorsement by the senate today. , Senator Gavit slipped over a raise of salary for township trustees in Whiting and Hammond to $1,500 a year after Senator Metterville had suggested that if the Lake and Marion county legislators had prepared an omnibus bill covering all the salary increases they were putting through it would have saved a "heap of time." , Other bills passed by the senate were: Releasing girls from the Indiana Girls School at 20 years of age Instead of 21. To prevent minors from smoking cigarets but. amending so as to permit them to sell cigarets. Limiting railroads to a charge of one cent a mile for transporting members of he national guard while on duty. Preventing the removal from a county of mortgaged live stock. Relieving the state board of school commissioners from advertising for bids outside of the state. Requiring all steam boilers to be equipped with safety devices.
MISS JEAN DAWSON. NEW YORK, March 4. There was unalloyed joy in the delicatessen shopB, butcher shops, grocery and candy stores and many other places when the millions of busy flies that make up New York s fly population learned that Miss Jean Dawson was too busy to leave Cleveland, Ohio, for a brief stay here. For Miss Dawson has been selected to head an insurrection in New York against flies. She had been notified that the community expected her and the authorities were patting themselves on the back over the idea of making themselves solid with the baldheaded men and the wearers of peek-a-boo sockB. But Miss Dawson has spoiled it all by declaring Bhe is too busy in Cleveland to spare the time to come to New York. She is a teacher of biology in the Cleveland Normal school and is known as the champion fly swatter of Ohio.

Stevenson, acting president, composed of Doctors Pierce, chairman, S. Edgar Bond. Bramcatnp, Gentle and Buche. to answer the letter. The answer will be submitted at a called meeting of the society for the approval ot the members. A discussion ot the scarlet faver situation in the city afld the communication followed and the members were found to be divided in their opinions as to whom to blame for the present number of cases in the city. All the doctors admitted that there was more scarlet fever In the city than they believe there should be. One ot the visiting physicians stated that the
newspapers should "jump on the doctors" of the city as !hey were to blame in this case. Dr. Davit, health officer, was neither blamed no exonerated of all charges made against him. The committee appointed to answer the communication ot the West Side Improvement association will meet tomorrow. A special meeting will be called for the Med;cal Society. Howard Dill, superintendent of the Richmond City Water Works appeared before the board of works this morning and stated that there was not enough revenue from persons living on Southwest A street between Fifth and Eleventh Btreets for the water works company to lay a main in the street. The property owners along the street petitioned some time ago fqr the main and for a fire hydrant at the corner of Southwest A and streets. Mr. Dill stated that it would be necessary to lay 500 feet of main for the purpose of installing L.e fire hydrant. He finally agreed to take the matter up and see that the fire hydrant was placed at the place where it is wanted. The claim which the Rodefeld Manufacturing company presented to the city September 24, 1912, for $26.50 was disallowed. The company started to build a fountain on city property and were ordered to stop work. They want the city to pay for the labor lost.
