think, that their business will be. greatly damaged. Perhaps it will; yet I believe that the country town merchant who will take advantage of the opportunities
for him In our new postal system, will find in it a means to hold, and even to improve his business. I cannot think that the farmers of this country have any such thing in mind as that of wrecking the business of the home merchants; but I do think that the farmers are ever anxious to get value received for their hard earned dollars; and to this end, they are going to spend their money where the returns are greatest. In calculating returns, however, service must be taken into consideration. The initial cost of anything does not always indicate the actual cost.
If I employ a man to do a job of
work for me at $1 a day, and it takes him two days to do the job, he Is not a cheaper man to employ than the $2.00 a day man who does the work in one day. In fact, the $2.00 a day man Is cheaper from a standpoint of expedition. Because of the borne merchant's proximity to the farms, and because of the telephone service at the disposal of both himself and the farmer, he holds a strategic position over the mail order house. In the common parlance: he is right on the ground floor. And with the Parcels Post now at his
command, he can place goods in the

meeting was one of much importance. Both visiting officers - made splendid talks for the good of the -order and gave , instruction concerning the exemplification of the Becret work. The meeting was largely attended. , Spread Prevented. The strict enforcement of precautionary measures established by the authorities of the village of Lewisburg has thus far successfully prevented the spread of diphtheria. Mayor G. M. Kumler ordered that the citizens not be allowed to congregate in the customary places about the town. for his service. But that is all he is j entitled to. I am looking at this in the ' same light as that of farmers owning a co-operative store and being compell
ed to pay for the services of those in charge. On Argument Lame. Oftentimes the argument is presented that the farmer should trade at

Nothing Unusual. Lord Cromer when ruler of Egypt made himself hateful to all sorts of rascals in that country, but he worked wonders of reform there and left it in more contented frame of mind than It had ever known previous to his arrival. While Lord Salisbury was British premier a member of the ministry complained that Lord Cromer had told him to go to the devil. "Dear me," said Salisbury, "he tells me that "every time he comes to London." London Tit-Bits.
May Inspect Goods. The home merchant has a better opportunity of ascertaining the immediate needs of the people In his community; he provides a place close at home where the goods themselves may
be seen and inspected; he has the opportunity of presenting his sales '
arguments in person, in fact, the home j merchant has such a decided advantage over the mail order house that he has little room to complain. i Why is it that farmers patronize the mail order houses so largely? In answering this question for me, the farmers say that they can buy cheaper of the mall order house than they can of the home merchant. This, of course, is true in some places, but not in all. I know of stores in country towns that will supply goods for just what they can be bought of the mail order houses, plus freight, etc. No one can blame a farmer for buying where prices are lowest, all things considered; but he does not always buy for the least of a mail order house. It is a fact, of course, that the merchants in some small towns charge too high prices, and the way some merchants conduct their business, they are compelled to exact a large profit to make up for the leaks due to mis
management. In many places the opinion is gen eral that the merchant who does a credit business exacts a large enough profit from those who pay cash to make up for the dead beats. This is not the case in all instances, but the opinion prevails, nevertheless. Credit System Lax. , I have summed up the home mer
chant situation in this way: In most
instances the credit system is too lax. Not enough advertising is done to keep the people in the . immediate vicinity posted on local prices and on goods for selection. The buying is not properly handled. The merchant does not' realize his own personal responsibility to the
merchant can render? In the first place he is in charge of a stock of merchandise close to home where the farmer can get what he wants on short notice. He can aid in the selection of goods. His knowledge of quality, etc. is invaluable. In this, I am assuming: that
This argument is lame, because the farmer would just as soon pay a little less for goods, and use what he can save to improve his farmstead instead of paying additional profit so that the merchant can handle the surplus as he elects. I The home market, of course, should
be considered: but that can be
