RAILROAD FIREMEN ARE HOT TO STRIKE
Communications to the effect that
the railroad firemen will not strike as was expected were received this afternoon by Fred L. Mann, chairman of the temporary organization which the local firemen formed a few days
ago. About 200 firemen from the C.
and O. and Pennsylvania lines who make their residence in this city, joined the organization and have hourly been expecting the order for a strike. The firemen's organizations over the country have been asking for a 15 per cent raise in the wages of the firemen as was granted to the firemen west of Chicago some time ago. The railroads refused to grant the demand and a mediation committee of the firemen's organizations and
brotherhoods over this part of the country. About 34,000 firemen east of Chicago would have been affected by the strike order. The telegram received late this afternoon called off strike preparations and stated that the mediation committee had arbitrated the case. The exact terms have not been learned as yet, but it is probable that they will be telegraphed into this city as soon as possible. The B. of L. F. & E. of this city have stopped all preparations for the strike which they expected.
