' " (National News Association) INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Vab. 18. Senator Billman's garnishee bill, against the supportera of which labor unions bad sharpened their axes, was sand

bagged into oblivion Monday after

noon when Representative w. W.. 8pencer in the house solemnly moved that it be made a special order of business for 2:00 p. m., March 2 the last after the General Assembly expects to adjourn, and to make doubly sure of death the date was fixed for Sunday when no legitimate business is transacted. Not a voice was raised against the motion and the spectators cheered lustily when they realized what had happened. Two representatives Beatty and Daughter constituted the sum total of, opposition registered against the semi-monthly pay bill for railroad employes. With this second triumph labor sympathizers were jubilant. The Hawkins-Spencer good roads bill found only twelve votes against its passage after all amendments had been voted down. This measure provides for the appointment of county road superintendents and assistant superintendents to look after the repair and maintenance of county highways. Also it establishes a scale of

automobile fees to take the place of all other taxes on motor vehicles except the ordinary personal property tax. Representatives Brenaman and Bierly talked to death the Stahl bill intended to increase the amount of taxes townships must raise in order to obtain a portion of the detciency school fund. They characterized It as unfair to the poorer counties. The Hughes bill authorising the Indianapolis school board to issue half a million dollars worth of bonds for the erection of a library on a site given the city by Jamee Whitcomb Riley, the H cosier poet. Other Measures Passed. Other measures passed were: By Cravens Reorganizing the departments of the state library and making the legislative reference library a separate department. " By Bedwell Forbidding publication or circulation of false or misleading advertisements. By Storen Repealing the law permitting state railroad commission the right, to authorize interurban roads to refuse to haul freight when the revenues from such traffic - are less than 33 per cent of the gross revenues. By Branaman Requiring persons engaged in operation of trains to be able to read and write the English language and understand the signals and book of rules. By Diel Re-lmbursing John W. Wittner of Noble county, $610 for land to which state could not furnish clear title. That Ditch Bill. Senator Kattman's ditch bill was made special order for 2:00 m. on Wednesday, after Representative McKennan pointed out many flaws in the measure. Representative Cravens moved reconsideration of the bill increasing tax exemptions on property of Greek Letter fraternities. He was voted down. It was killed last week and will remain dead. Hard on Chinese. Chinese laundries are doomed in Indiana if Representative Van Home's bill, introduced Monday, becomes law. It says all public laundries must be licensed by county commissioners; that no person shall sleep or eat in rooms used as laundries; ' and no tuberculosis victim or person afflicted with communicable disease may be employed in a laundry. Fines for Tips. Here's what Representative Hoddinott's anti-tipping bill threatens: A

Make a plain syrup by mixing one pint of granulated sugar and pint of warm water and stir for two minutes. Put 2 ounces of pure Pinex (fifty cents' worth) in a pint bottle, and fill it up with the Sugar Syrup. This gives you a family supply of the best cough syrup at a saving of $2. It never spoils. Take a teaspoon! ul every one, two or three hours. The effectiveness of this simple remedy is surprising. It seems to take hold instantly, and will usually stop the most obstinate cough in 24 hours. It tones up the jaded appetite and is just laxative enough to be helpful in a cough, and has a pleasing taste. Also excellent for bronchial trouble, throat tickle, sore lungs and asthma, and an unequaled remedy for whooping cough and croup. This recipe for making cough remedy with Pinex and Sugar Sjyrup (or strained honey) is a prime favorite in thousands of homes in the United States and Canada. The plan has been imitated, though never successfully. If you try it, use only genuine Pinex, which is the moist valuable concentrated compound of Norway white pine extract, and la rich in guaiacol and all the natural healing nine elements. Other preparations will not work in this recipe. A guaranty of absolute satisfaction, or monev promptly refunded, goes with this recipe. Your drugpNt has Pinex, or will get it for you. If not, send to The Pinex Co., Ft. Wayne, Ind.

REDUCES TAX. INDIANAPOLIS. Feb. 18. For the purpose of benefiting 500,000 families in Indiana, the senate late Monday passed Senator Lamont's bill, exempting from taxation $75 worth of furniture and all musical Instruments In

the home of each family. Incidentally it will remove a total of over $37,-

000,000 from the taxable list of the

state.

Debate on this bill waxed hot. Floor leader Curtis and Senators Will Wood and Ratts, Republicans fought against its passage. Curtis pleaded the financial condition of the state

wouldn't stand such a cut in revenues, and Wood Questioned the constitutionality of the bill. Senators Ballou and Gavit were strong for it, and called attention to the fact that similar laws in other states had worked well. There will be no state hospital for inebriates. Stotsenburg's bill, carrying an appropriation of $100,000 went down to easy defeat. Senator Will Wood supported it. Senators Curtis and Taylor opposed it because of the

expense, but are in favor of its principle. Senator Strange declared the Democrats were legislating to make more Inebriates and then asking appropriations to core them. "Inconsistency was what he called it. Other little things that glided through the Senate Monday evening were: By Stotsenburg Permitting church societies to recleve donations for the maintenance of cemeteries. By Carey Jackson Establishing township vocational schools.

Senate, introduced a bill late Monday providing ..that no child labor under 16 years shall be employed. The force behind the child labor bill is the legislative committee of the Progressive party. Senator Hibberd, the "other half" of the Bull Moose delegation, wants the school commissioners of South Bend elected, by direct vote, instead of being appointed. His bill just introduced would put South Bend in the same class as Indianapolis and Terre Haute in this respect.

The "arson trust" has an enemy in the person of Senator Harmon, .who introduced a measure to create the po

sition of a state fire marshal, with necessary assisstants, his department to have authority to investigate fire risks, supervise city fire ordinances, and otherwise protect against Are bugs. Senator McCormick's new bill provides that where a drain costs over $100,000 and runs through more than one county, it may be bonded instead of the entire cost being assessed against the property holders. Another bill by McCormick seeks to prohibit the. use of automatic guns in hunting in Indiana. So liquor may not be shipped from wet districts into "dry" territory, Senator White submitted a measure with drastic penalties. Proposed Laws. Other things proposed in new bills were : By Van Nuys Creating a state civil service bureau. By Will R. Wood Abolishing the office of natural gas inspector because natural gas had vanished.
