SEA POSTOFFICES: fffanMOTitg and aortmg tne man mnur on Ocean Liners. Every one la aware that a large quantity of mall comes from Europe. Probably most persons assume that It Is damped off the steamers In bulk and sorted and routed in the postofflce of (the receiving port. Such a system iwouia resmi in nopeiees congestion, smd practically, all of the 15,000.600 pounds of foreign mall matter received at New York on an average of recent years Is ready, sorted and sacked when the steamers make port. This work la done In the sea postofflces board the ships and means days saved in the time of delivery of mall matter Intended for Inland points. In the huge mass of mall brought into New York each year there are on an average 80,000,000 separate pieces, many thousands with Inadequate addresses, yet to such a degree of efficiency has the operation of the sea postofflces been brought and so carefully Is the work done that less than B00 errors are made annually. As the entire quantity of the ocean mall received in a year would fill 2.200 standard mall cars an almost Incredible accuracy Is Indicated less than one error of any kind whatever for every -four carloads of malL , Congress authorized the sorting of mail on board conveying steamships In 1890, but It was not until the year following that any systematic effort was made to do so. The work of the sea postofflce la very similar to that of tae railway mall service. On board a large liner there will be usually two .United States clerks, two in the employ of the country from which the steamer sails and several subalterns r porters. This force will on an average trip open and sort from SOO to 900 sacks of mail, probably consisting of B00.000 ordinary letters and 4.000 registered letters, besides 250.000 parcels and periodicals. - Mall for New York city Is distributed and separately sacked for each of the stations and that for the United States generally according to a schedule which has 128 divisions. In addition to the mail for the United States, the sea postofflce clerks must sort that destined for Cuba. Mexico, Canada and the orient, a great deal of the last class being forwarded by rail to San Francisco and thence by steamer. To facilitate matters two mall boats are maintained at New York, and these meet incoming steamers at the quarantine station, one taking on the mall
bags intended for direct delivery to Vick's Croup and Pneumonia Salve, trains and teaming directly to the!the Qew recentl y Introduced railway stations along the river front, ' the other that for New York city and , nere from NortQ Carolina, relieves such others as require rebandling. The croup and cold troubles by external apees postofflces cost the government plication. There is no need to dose the something less than $3,000,000 per an-jstomacn with ln3uri0us medicines. Toe Busy to Work. Edward D. Easton, who claims that he made the largest single fee of any shorthand reporter in the world when he collected $75,000 from the lawyers In the famous star route trials, was sent to report an important hearing in a small southern town. The work was so pressing that he found he needed an assistant who could typewrite. Searching for such si person, h sent out messages, advertised in the country papers and made desperate appeals for somebody to locate the man. He waited at his hotel all day without a sign of an assistant and went to bed that night extremely worried because his work depended absolutely en his getting some one to help him. Shortly after midnight he was aroused by a knock at the door. 'I am the man you want," said the stranger. "I am the only typewriter in this part of the state, and" "Well," exclaimed Easton eajrerly. "can you come to work tomorrow morning?" "I was going to tell you." continued the visitor, "that I rend your advertisement saying you wanted a typewriter, and I thought I'd drop in to tell you I can't do the work.
