A PRACTICAL JOKE . RESULTSjERIOUSLY Report Started By Unknown Person That Add Hearst Was Killed.
SISTER IS PROSTRATED
Call Was Sent Over Private Wire of T. H., I. & E. Company.
A practical joker, or some excitable person unduly agitated, started a report which may result seriously for Mrs. George Heckathorn of New Paris, who is prostrated at the home of her brother Addison Hearst, 301 North Eight enth street. A telephone call was sent to Mrs. Heckathorn this morning that Hearst had been killed while at work at the American S'-eding Machine company where he is employed as a machine hand. James B. Hearst, telegrapher operator for the Indianapolis Star, a brother to Addison Hearst, was also telegraphed of the alleged Natality. Merrill Injured. Who started the wild report is unknown to Mr. Hearst, though the theory has been advanced as the result of an, accident that occurred to Marion Merrill, 837 North Twelfth street, also an employe of the company, when he fell and broke his leg last evening after leaving the American machine company's factory, and was taken to his home. Mr. Hearst's father-in-law was asked to take Mr. Merrill s position as elevator operator until he had recovered from the illness and it is believed that in this manner the report became misconstrued. Mrs. Heckathorn received the report of the supposed accident at 9 o'clock and came to Richmond as soon as possible. She arrived at the home of her brother shortly after 12 o'clock and opened the door leading into the kitchen. Her brother was sitting in the roont reading a newspaper. "I thought you were dead," cried the woman and fainted in his arms. A physician was summoned immediately. She is now in a serious con
dition and will be cared for at the home of her brother until she is able to be taken to her home. Called Station. The call was sent to New Paris in an unusual manner. An unknown woman called up the T. H. I. & E. traction office on North Eighth street and told W. R. King and Cameron Addison to telephone to Mr. Heckathorn, who is a motorman on the New Paris and Richmond Interurban that his brother-in-law had been killed. He immediately told his wife but was un? able to accompany her to this city. The message was sent over the company's private wire between Richmond and New Paris. The woman who sent the message represented herself to be Mrs. Hearst, it is said.

MR. AND MRS. SIMON PADDOCK. NEW YORK, Feb. 5. Simond David Paddock, former chauffeur, now master of a million, left by a rich uncle, is at last enjoying that long planned honeymoon with his pretty bride, the former Miss Lillian Marie Wirth, daughter of a necktie manufacturer. Miss Lillian's mamma for a long while stubbornly objected to the union on the ground that Simon was an idler, a spender and not socially or intellectually her daughter's equal. No one knows why she changed her mind, but she smilingly predicts they will be very happy.

H1ERS ARRAIGNED TODAY ON CHARGE
However, No Disposition of the Case Was Made By Judge. No disposition was made this afternoon of the case against Fred Hiers after he was arraigned before Judge Fox on the charge of receiving embezzled street car tickets from the T. H.. I. and E. Traction company employes. The prosecuting witness, Henry Warman and Cecil Baldwin who were
indicted by the grand jury for em-! bezzling the tickets which they turned over to Hiers to dispose of, were not asked to testify. j An attorney appeared for Hiers and
asked the court to extend leniency toward the defendant. Judge Fox said he would announce his decision within a few days. Warman pleaded guilty
to the charge placed against him sev- j
oral weeks ago, and sentence was withheld. The date of Baldwin's trial has not beeu set.
There are many amusing things in this world. Among them managers of prima donnes. Also prima donnes or near-prima donnes. "Madame Scheff is very tired and will rest this afternoon she can see no one," said Monsieur the manager over the obliging telephone. Some uncertainty on the wire. Charming telephone attendant takes up the receiver and says "Westcott!" "Is this Madame Scheff's manager?" asks unwilling hack at the other end. 'No it's its the Westcott," says the charming attendant. "Nothing doing," says the hack to the editor. "However, I'll take a look myself," says the hack.
