Councilman J. A. Beatty Has Circulated a Petition Against It.

(Palladium Special) EATON, O.. Feb. 7. The matter of whether or not Main street shall be paved with brick will doubtless be submitted to the voters of the city in November at the regular election under the referendum law, a petition praying for such action -having been filed Wednesday by Councilman J. A. Beatty. Five members of the council favor the improvement and have passed legal steps in that direction, but Beatty declaring that the abutting property owners do not want brick, has bitterly' fought the improvement. Even if the voters favor the improvement, it will mean a long delay because with the arrival of November the season for such work will have been passed. , , j Was Well Known. Mrs. Jane Hawley," 68, mother of R. C. Hawley, of thfs city, died suddenly Tuesday evening at her home in Dayton from heart failure. The deceased

formerly resided in Eaton and had many friends here. Mrs. Sina Yingling, of Gratis, is a daughter. Officers Chosen. The directors of the Eaton Lighting company has reorganized by the selection of the following officers: President, Elam Fisher; vice president, O. B. Cokefair; secretary, W. C. Dove. Other directors of the company are L. Ju Brown, J. C. Whitley, L. G. Gaskell and W. Rust. Frank J. Jackley has been re-employed as manager. Humane Society. . The humane society recently organized in this county has been incorporated and is now in possession of its charter. , Honoring the memory of one of the county's greatest humanitarians, jurists and historians, the organization ,has been styled "The Abner . D. Haines Humane Society of Preble County." Mrs. ,S. E. Reynolds, of Eaton, is secretary. New Names Drawn. . Because of illness of members of the January grand jury of the comraon pleas court, six additional names have been drawn for service. . They are John R. .Burson, Dixon township; , J. M. C. Orr, Israel; J. O. McPherson, Jefferson; Oliver Koselring, Twin; J. O. Mendenhall, Gratis; Wesley Fowble, Monroe. The jury has been called for duty, Wednesday, Febru- ' ary 12th.

The weight of the grasshopper was found to be sixty times greater than that of the ant. The force exerted by the ant in dragging the grasshopper along the road was therefore proportionately equal to that of a man weighing 150 pounds pulling a load of four and onehalf tons or a horse of 1,200 pounds a load of thirty-six tons.

Local Banker Says Law Would Punish the "Gold Brick" Man

The "Blue Sky" bill is one of the best and most effective measures to remedy the swindling now going on in Indiana of any law ever presented before the state legislature according to one of the local banners. The bill is now pending before the state legislature and provides that any person misrepresenting stocks when offering them for sale shall be considered a swindler and shall be compelled to serve a term in a penal institution besides paying a heavy fine.

The bill has been presented because of the numerous eases where people have been defrauded by persons selling stock which is known to the sell er to be useless. There is now a penalty imposed for persons using the mails for this purpose though they are not restricted from selling it in other ways. "Wayne county has had its share of 'suckers' who have been gullible enough to buy stock of persons representing themselves to be agents of companies, whereby persons can get rich quick." said a banker. "The farmers especially have been swindled. Gold mine stock has especially been represented to the tillers of the soil to be worth a large sum of money and which is really worthless. The 'gold

brick man is not satisfied with the money procured by the stock, but continues to bleed' his customers with ! promises of riches and asks for mor i money to buy machinery." i This game has been worked so thoroughly by confidence men in this section that the sale of legitimate stock has been impaired, he said. Persons

who have been deceived by the worthless stock are so prejudiced that they keep their money from circulation and refuse to enter investment in worthy enterprises.
