Earlham Notes By H. Peterson
The Ionian literary committee elected was Howard Trueblood, Hubert Doggett and Ernest Raiford. B.1 W. Cooper waa elected marshal in the place of T. B. Stanley, and Marvin Gilbert was put on the book committee.
Rev. Edward M. Woodard spoke to
Earlham students yesterday on "What
Is Success?" He is the superintendent of the evangelistic work of Western Yearly Meeting. His talk was well liked by the students. Mr. Woodard said that success depends upon the determination to overcome the obstacles in his path.
Last night the last regular practice if the Earlham chorus was held, in preparation for the concert to be held on Friday, January 24. Mr. Friermood
and Miss Gaston feel confident of the I
success of the concert as the rehearsal last night was an especially good one. There are about a hundred in the chorus and there will be several soloists brought for the occasion.

CHICAGO MERCHANT IS SHOT TO DEATH
(Nat!onal News Association) CHICAGO, Jan. 16 Two suspects were held by the police today In con-
J nection with the murder of Mose j Mansfield, shot to death in his store yesterday afternoon. Detectives are
seeking other persons in connection with the case. Capt. Halpin, chief of detectives, believes the murder is similar to that of Joseph Logue, who was killed in his office in the MeYicker Theater building. According to Capt. Halpin both men dealt to some extent in stolen goods, and he believes the murderer in each case feared that the dealer had given information against him. "I believe a quarrel occurred in Mansfield's shop, thnt Mansfield threatened the man with a pistol and that the assailant took it from him and fired," said Halpin. Mansfield's family resented the police theory. They assert that Mansfield was killed while resisting a robber.

Charles W. Jordan, of this city is very much alive. Mr. Jordan, secretary of the Commercial club has been receiving mail addressed to himself and wife inviting them to visit supposed cousins and relatives in the western part of the country of whom he never heard. He received an invitation last month from persons, believing he was a kinsman, inviting him to visit them during Christmas holidays. Mr. Jordan did not know the persons sending the letters and had no idea as to how they happened to be addressed to him. An attempt to defraud an insurance company exposed recently cleared up the mystery. A man by the name of Charles W. Jordan disappeared from Los Angeles, California, and a body of a man found in a barn was claimed by his wife and his son. The woman collected the insurance though she knew it was not her husband's body it is said. Jordan was supposed to have come to this part of the country and it is thought that this was the reason

KATHERINE AREND3 -According to Dr. Katherine Arends, one of
New Ycrk's most prominent women physicians, Dr. S. J. Crumbine, head of the School of Medicine at the University of Kansas, should banish his fears that the American woman of the future will he the ugliest creature in all creation because of an excessive use of paint, powder and cosmetics. "Leaving aside any consideration of aids to beauty," said Doctor Arends, "the American woman of today Is the most beautiful woman in the world. I do not believe that paint and powder injure the face, though I do not altogether approve the use of paint. But there is something to be said of these days of fierce competition when there are three women to every man. Therefore, it is necessary for the woman It is her duty to make herself as beautiful as she can be.
