Ctly , I, ,-i , - iaii Heart io Heart Talks C fey JAMES A. EDGBRTON THE POWER OF SUGGESTION. Isaac Newton once said, in substance, tnat we with all our science had but picked up a few pebbles from the shore of the great ocean of Truth. If that Is true of the outward world It Is still more true of the Inward. We know more of the physical universe than we know of ourselves. By the law of balance the inner, subjective world is as great as the outer, objective world. Both are infinite. Just now we seem to be on the edge of an enchanting new science, the knowledge of ourselves. We know so little of this as yet that it does not pay to dogmatize. The proper attitude is to throw away all preconceived notions and to approach this study with minds eager only for the truth. It has already been proved beyond question that both mind and body can be influenced by suggestion, whether the suggestion comes from ourselves or from another. It has also been proved, not only by faith healing cults, but by scientists, that many diseases can be cured by the same process. The thtlry is that the suggestion works on the subconscious mind. What the subconscious mind is nobody knows. It is simply a name to describe a mysterious power within us not yet understood an intelligence that sleeps not, that guides our bodily functions, that preserves us in times of sudden peril, that seemingly senses things unknown to the outer mind, that shapes us unconsciously, that builds us and heals us. All these are but guesses. We know so little of this mind within the mind that we can do little more than guess. Yet we do know by experiment that there are certain things this inner mind will do. Here is a simple, primary method to test the thing for yourself. If you have some problem to work out, some mental task to do, put it up to this subconscious mind before you to go to sleep. If yon are nervous or ill. suggest health. Only do it with full faith or your doubt will prove a countersuggestlon. It Is worth too experiment. Try it Literary. "Colonel Brown seems to be very literary." remarked a visitor in the Brown household to the negro maid, seeing some magazines on the floor. "Tas. ma'am." replied the ebony faced girl. yas, ma'am, be sholy am literary. He jes nat'ally llttahs things all ovah dls year house." Woman's Home Companion. BEST COUGH MEDICINE FOR CHILDREN. "I am very glad to say a few words in praise of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy" writes Mrs. Lida Dewey, Milwaukee, Wis. "I have used it for years both for my children and myself and it never fails to relieve and cure a cough or cold. No family with children should be without it as it gives almost immediate relief in cases of croup." Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is pleasant and safe to take, which is of great importance when a medicine must be given to young children. For sale by all dealers. The Army Canteen.
The united support of the army, many prominent government officials and influential civic organisations is behind the movement to restore the canteen to the army. Undisputed facts show that since the prohibition of the sale of beers and light wines in army posts there has been a remarkable increase in the amount of drunkenness in the service and a lowering , of the moral standard, so it is wisely argued that to improve the condition of the enlisted men the ban against the canteen must be lifted. Recently General Edwards, in command of the big military post near Cheyenne. Wyoming, notified the war department that many of the men in his command were becoming cocaine fiends through the, practice of keepers of low dives near the post placing this drug in the liquor sold to the soldiers. A number of the men, he said, were now so addicted to the habit that they were securing the drug by mail. In a certain middle west city where an army poet is located the street which led to its main entrance was fifteen years ago. a residential district. Today this street, which is several blocks in length, is lined on both sides with the lowest type of saloons and houses of 111 fame, whose keepers prey upon the soldier, robbing him of his meager pay and debauching him to such an extent that he is unfit to follow his calling, which demands that his physical condition shall be as sound as a trained athlete. When the enlisted men were permitted their garrison club, where they could obtain beer and other light intoxicants, which they were never permitted to drink to excess, the posts were not surrounded by human vampires and vultures and there were, consequently, few inducements to lure the soldiers from the watchful eyes of their officers. To the ban against the canteen can also be traced the deplorable number of soldiers now suffering from venereal diseases. In his recent annual report the secretary of war says that while the United States regular army is one of the smallest in the world it has twice as many, men suffering from venereal diseases as the Gerrran army, the largest in the world. No wonder that there is a general demand being made on congress for the restoration of the cantren and congress should turn a deaf ear to those well intentioned but misguided opponents of the canteen who in attempting to improve the morals of the military service are debasing them.
The Democratic Dilemma.
Those Democratic politicians who throng the lobby and other more popular sections of the Dennison hotel, Indianapolis, where the smug and gracious lobbyists hold forth, have about reached the sad conclusion that they must make some concessions to the popular demand for progressive legislation or put the future success of their party in jeopardy, and with equal sadness they realize that legislation demanded by the people costs money and the state is nearly broke. The first impulse of the Democratic majority in the house of representatives was reactionary, for Speaker Cook filled the important judiciary committee with a group of old school Democrats who could be relied upon to choke to death any bill showing progressive tendencies. The sober second thought of the party leaders convinced them that Cook had made a mistake in selecting the personnel of the judiciary committee, so another judiciary committee has been created, know as committee "B" and, it is understood, the majority of its members are not hostile to a select few progressive measures. Probably the purpose of creating two separate committees to consider bills relating to judicial affairs is to send progressive measures unpopular with party leaders to the standpat committee for execution, and progressive measures which Mr. Taggart and his friends approve of to the more or less progressive committee for favorable action. However, it is a safe bet that a number of measures advocated in the state Progressive platform will not be written into laws by the 1913 Democratic legislature especially any popular legislation which would mean additional expense to the state, because when Mr. Marshall turned over his official duties to Mr. Ralston yesterday the state treasury was about as lean and hungry as the Richmond city treasury. This sad fact now haunts those Dmocratic leaders who believe it would be a stragetical political move to swipe the most popular measures advocated by the Progressive party. In other words they would be more progressive now if past administrations had been more economical.

Curious Anticipations. Many peculiar anticipations have been cited against patent applications. At one time a congressman took to the patent office lock invented by one of his rural constituents. The lock was an exact copy of a lock figured in "Price on Locks," showing the lock used on a gate of ancient Thebes thousands of years before Christ. The congressman after examining the lllustratiou. which was shown him by one of the officers, exclaimed that he didn't care who that fellow from Thebes was. be certainly stole it from his constituent. On another occasion an application for a patent was filed for a flower basket whose construction corresponded in detail with the Scriptural description of the ark in which Moses was placed iu the bulrushes, which, we are told in the second chapter of Exodus, was an ark of bulrushes daubed with slime and pitch. SINGING MOTHERS.
Charm of the Muaio of Thair V.icaa te Their Little Ones. They came to me in a dream those singing mothers. A long, slow procession of shadowy forms, beautiful as rainbows and as wonderful, singing a 1 " Trv rime mmc nwi ui kin uiviu I ers. clasping their little babes with a tenderness that was half fear and with wide. Inquiring eyes filled with holy light and the consciousness of the deepest realization of life. Then came strong mothers of youth, leading happy faced children and confident with a semte of power, buoyant with hope and radiant with promise. Last of all came silver mothers of men. leaning on their stalwart sons and. though bowed with years, yet gloriously young in spirit, hallowed by memories and glowing with the victory of achievement. And I. a mother, watching these pass by and listening to their haunting music, felt as never before the divine significance of motherhood and all the hidden meanings in the word singing." All this is music In a marvelous mood, but there is no music on earth more appealing or more far reaching than the voice of a mother singing to her little ones. No audience ever listened with keener rapture to any prima donna than that little group jrathered in the twilight hour at a mother's knee.
