Freight Troubles Again. It seems to be the lot of Richmond shippers to have to be constantly fighting for their rights against the transportation lines which enter this city. Fairly acceptable traction freight service was won after a hard struggle and concessions have been secured from the Pennsylvania railroad after much effort on the part of local manufacturers and jobbers, but the fight is not over yet, by long odds. Richmond shippers are now confronted with the task of compelling the C. & O. railroad to condescend to handle "local" freight to the various towns along the line to the north and south of this city. Railroad officials profess to be at a loss to understand why this service should be so poor, but it is to be hoped that under the vigorous prods the shippers and the Commercial Club are prepared to administer to the officials of that road, the source of the trouble will be as discernable to them as it now is to the business men of this city, who have realized for some time that the C. & O. has been ignoring "local" freight in its mad scramble to build up its "long haul" freight business. The Palladium agrees with the officers of the Commercial Club that a withdrawal of some of the "long haul" business the C. & O. is now receiving from Richmond shippers would be a most effectual remedy for the betterment of the system employed in handling the "local" freight shipped from this city. Incidentally, while the Richmond shippers and the Commercial Club are engaged in the work of improving freight conditions it would be a wise move to stir up the Pennsylvania railroad over the poor local freight service now being given by the Grand Rapids & Indiana division.

This is My 66th Birthday
The "King" Receives Homage. Thomas Taggart of French Lick and Indianapolis is again to be the undisputed boss of Indiana for the next four years at least. That is an unquestioned fact and must be accepted by the people of this state as gracefully as possible, for in tearing down one machine, the Republican, they have strengthened another. Democracy's, until it is now as powerful as that Joe Kealing, Jim Watson, cte., used to take joy rides in. However, it having been the will of the people that gang rule should be perpetuated in Indiana, the best must be made of the situation and it is to be hoped that Mr. Taggart will be a good boss and give us a few things we pursued down a siding instead of the main line We know that by a mere nod of his head the Laird of French Lick can provide for the people a public utilities commission law in which the public is properly safeguarded, some kind of acceptable commission government for municipalities, a good roads law and a presidential primary act, for did not one thousand loyal Democrats and true, mostly members of the legislature but sprinkled here and there with future vice-presidents and governors and ex-United States senators, stand on their chairs at the Old Hickory Club banquet last night and yell themselves hoarse when Charles A. Towne mentioned the name of Mr. Taggart? That one great roar that arose at Democracy's festive board at Indianapolis last night translated reads, "hail to the king," although just a few short months ago those same voices blended in a great chorus, which rang forth from as many car platforms and public halls, "down with the boss system. Vote for us and the people will rule again." Sad to relate this ancient political slogan had lost none of its magnetic powers for the majority of Indiana voters listened and believed in it as of yore.
