Yesterday late in the afternoon I walked west on Main street, and in front of a toy store window I saw a child, a little girl of perhaps eight summers, In poor dress, standing looking longingly at the dolls in fine dress in the window there. I saw the pale, sweet, wistful face, and wondered what Christmas would bring her. The busy man, with books and papers approaching from the west, saw it, too, and turned and stepped aside at the window. I saw him touch the tangled curls, and bend low and whisper to the child, and I saw the glad look of sweet surprise on her face, when he put two silver dollars in her fittle hand, and hurried away. The gentleman who was walking with me said: "He has caught the spirit of Christmas. Do you know him?" I replied, "It is Christmas in that man's heart all the year around. He has a heart of gold." When I was pressed to say something further of the man, I spoke, not of his misfortunes, or of any mistakes he may have made, but of his l

The Christmas Lection Now it came to pass in those days, there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to enroll themselves, every one to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because ne was of the house and family of David; to enroll himself with Mary, who was bethrothed to him, being great with child. And it came to pass, while they were there, the days were fulfilled that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her first-born son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were shepherds in the same country abiding in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. And an angel of the Ird stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angle said unto them, Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people; for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. And this is the sign unto you: Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying: Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men in whom He is well pleased. And it came to pass, when the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing that is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger. And when they saw it, they made known concerning the saying which was spoken to them about this child, and all that heard it wondered at the things which were spoken unto them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they hud heard and seen, even as it was spoken unto them.
Merry Christmas
"Merry Christmas!" There should be fewer people greet you so tomorrow while their lips sneer and their eyes mock bitterly, for the spirit of brotherly love is again abroad in the land. One political party made it a campaign issuo last fall. The strong have heard the cries of the weik, ground underfoot in the battle for existence, and the hand of the sturdy and self reliant has found other work to do than returning blow for blow it has founa time to lift to their feet those who have fallen in the conflict. Tomorrow will be the first Christmas day of a new era fcr this republic, at least. An era which v ill give the "square deal" to those millions who have been the victims of false social and economic conditions. Au era which will safeguard the rights of the strong and protect the interests of the weak. The American people have awakened to the fact that they have been unjust to those who have been unable to keep step with the fast pace of this commercial age; they have realized that real charity is not that which carelessly throws alms to the poor and ignores conditions which have kept the poor in the bondage of Poverty; they have realized that by being generous to the poor on one day in the year the anniversary of the birth of the Babe of Bethlehem they have not fulfilled all their obligations to the great Brotherhood of Humanity. With the spirit of Christmas in their hearts, which is the spirit of brotherly love, miliums of our people have lifted their voices for a new order of things, and the poor..whoin God loves best are to come into their own. Merry Christmas!

Smith Students of the high school who are j taking the commercial course will find new typewriters in the department when they return from the Christmas vacation. The city school board has placed fourteen typewriters of the latest design, each having eighty-four characters, in the department. The old machines had seventy-six characters. It was learned that pupils who had taken the course were handicapped when they entered offi ces where machines of eighty-four I characters were in use. In many cas- ; j es, pupils lost their positions. The j j board believes that graduates of the i I commercial department will have no ! trouble in holding their positions after they have learned to operate the j new machines. i Care of the Eyes. ) On rising iu the morning the eyes j should be bathed gently In cold water. ; Twenty passes are said to be decided- j ly strengthening. TEMFTATION. Martin Luther threw bis inkstand at tfce devil. He believed Id a persoual Satan who could materialize himself, and wben be thought be saw his Satanic majesty be went after him with the first weapon at hand. We laugh, but I Have you ever thought how much j easier it would be to resist temptatiou I if one could believe In a personal j devil? You fight an unseen foe. j If you could get Lucifer backed up agaiust the wall when he comes to tempt you and he could not retreat you could have it out with him. But He Is a smooth citizenHe wears a myriad disguises. He may make a rear or a flank attack or get you into a corner and compel you to hold up your hands, or be may take the shape of the Ijjrelei and enchant you with a lure that will put your boat upon the rocks. He has his Calypso islands as well as his Incarnated devils who bludgeon only you do not recognize them as such. If we only knew! We may know him when he openly tempts us with his cardinal vices of strong drink or gambling or other defi nite aboveboard sins, and we can easily say to our ancient enemy: "Get thee behind me. Satan!" ButHow defend ourselves against temptations concerning which we are blind? Suppose he tempts us through our love of ease of body or mind, through selfishness or popularity or self righteousnessinsidious avenues of approach? He does do that. We are like children. We are unacquainted with our temptations, or. If we do know them, we love the follies to which they lead all too much. Wise old devil! Nevertheless, if we make the most of ourselves we must conquer the things that most easily tempt us. We cannot throw an Inkstand at a devil we do not believe In. But we can know our weak spots. We can know the temptations to whkb our natures are most subject and thus circumvent the devil. cannot b corrected by local treatment g to arrest the flow of secretion you must remove the cause; this symptom is only one of nature's warnings of a run-down system.
