Pennsylvania Official at Eldorado Sends a Bullet Through Brain. (Palladium Special) ELDORADO, O., Dec. 23 111 health, Jt is believed, was responsible for the death of Charles Petry, aged 47, who committed suicide here Friday afternoon. Petry had been ticket agent here for the Pennsylvania railroad for the last thirty years. Following the suicide it was rumored that Petry was ghort In his accounts with the company and that the arrival of Inspector Stackle of Columbus, here Friday morning to make an investigation of the office had some significance. However, up to a late hour today no shortage or other evidence of irregularity had been disclosed. Upon the arrival of Inspector Stackle he was invited by Petry to lunch. Before the luncheon was prepared, however, the inspector and Petry spent about an hour together chatting pleasantly. After lunch they went to the office, but had not been there long until Mr. Petry told Inspector Stackle that he had to return to his home to secure something, which he said he had forgotten. Within a short time after he had reached his home, his wife, daughter and neighbors were attracted by the. report of a pistol in an upstairs room of the Petrv residence. Hastening to the scene, they were confronted by the j K,,fi..ai.K ui reu, j, ....t

Luken & Co. advertisement SYSTEM IN BUSINESS. Advantage of the Man Who Knows Where to Find Things. Among twenty clerks employed by a New York Importing house it was no easy matter for one to attract the attention of the manager. And It waa not with any such idea. In fact, that young Oaven kept his desk and the papers In his care in the most neat and careful order. He did It just because be bnd a systematic mind and liked things In place. He was always able at a moment's notice to put his hand on anything he needed. So when the manager happened to need a certalu price list, copies of which had been given not ouly to Gaven. but to every one of the other nineteen clerks, it was Gaven who placed his hand on his copy while the others were Just beginning to wonder where they had put theirs. There was no comment on that, but a few days later when the manager again needed certain papers Gaven found them first. "Aren't you the man who gave me that price list on Monday?" asked the manager. "Yes!" "Well, my private secretary has Just been promoted, and I need a new one. a man who will know where to find things. Would you like the place V" There was only one answer to that. That was how Gaven got his first step. New York World. THE TINY HUMMING BIRD. In One Species Its Bill Is Nearly as Long as Its Body. All humming birds, though varying much In size and color, exhibit the same form of wing, legs and feet, the wings being strong (considering tho small size of the bird), while the legs and feet are remarkably weak and delicate, n clear indication that these little creatures are intended to spend almost all their time in the air. In accordance with this we find that humming birds are never seen on the ground; that even when feeding they seldom trouble themselves to alight, but suspend themselves In the air before the flower on whose juices they mean to feed, the rapid vibration of the wings causing them to appear like two fans of filmy gauze and producing at the same time that peculiar humming sound from which these birds derive their popular name. The beak of most humming birds is Jong, delicate and slightly curved to enable It to reach the inmost recesses of the trumpet shaped flowers which abound in the tropical regions, but the shape of the beak is very vnriable, probably on account of the particular flower on which the bird feeds. In some instances It is nearly straight, and in oue species, the sword bill humming bird, it Is very nearly as long as the rest of the body.-St, Louis GlobeDemocrat. Bismarck's Mystic Number. Bismarck held, with Pythagoras, that Jiot 13, but 3, was the great and perfect number. Bismarck's associations with 3 were remarkable. He had served three masters. He had three names Bismarck, Scboenhausen and Lauentmrg. The arms of his family are a clover leaf and three oak leaves. He was concerned in three wars and signed three treaties of peace. In the Franco-Prussian war he had three borses killed under him. He brought about the meeting of three emperors and waa responsible for the triple al liance. He had three children. His family motto was "In Trinitate Robur" ("Strength In Trinity"), and contemporary caricature pictured him with three hairs on his head. Three was the beginning, the middle and the end of Bismarck.

It placed the city in communication with inland New York an agricultural empire iu itself, whose wealth had previously flowed by way of the Susquehanna river to Baltimore ar.d New York became the seaport for the agricultural states bordering on the great lakes. Until the Erie canal was opened It had cost SSS a ton to transport wheat from Buffalo to Albany. With this new waterway the cost fell to something more than $5. A string of cities, several of which became large ones, sprang up along its course, all tributary to New York. Burton J. Hendrick in McClure's Magazine. Unconscious Bravery. At a place called Angbin, about forty miles south of Bangkok, a Chinaman and his wife cultivated a small sugar cane plantation. The man had been greatly annoyed by having his cane eaten by his neighbors' buffalo calves. Coming home one evening Just at dark, he saw what he thought was one of the marauders at work on the cane. Stealing silently np behind it, he struck It a mighty blow with a heavy club. The animal dropped without a sound. The Chinaman told his wife what he had done and added, "That calf will steal no more of my cane." In the morning he found that the "calf was a full grown tiger. He had killed It by breaking its neck. The Gennett. Dec. 25 "The Light Eternal." At the Murray. Vaudeville Matinee and Night. The Murray. The bill which opens a week's engagement at the Murray today is made ! up of five distinguished acts and ini eludes no less than three feature offerings. The Four Brass Men is an act i that will no doubt prove to be very i popular as it is made up of musicians ! that really have a claim to that title. Harry Crandall and Co., have a comi edy skit entitled "Fun In A Grocery I Store" that has been expressly writ- ! ten for laughing purposes only. The j five excellent acts are of a nature that ! do not conflict and patrons will be treated to a well selected program of variety. Christmas Attraction. Aside from its intense dramatic interest, and spectacular features, "The Light Eternal," which comes to the Gennett theatre Christmas, matinee and night, has in its make-up that peculiar quality that demands support if there is sincerity in the cry of the public for the elevation of the stage. The theatre is becoming more and more a great popular teacher, and has in the past so often made propaganda for flippancy, irreverence and immorality that every encouragement should be given to an effort that -demonstrates the high purpose it may serve, and please the public at the same time. This play, primarily a sensational and spectacular drama, embodies ev,,'ry good feature that counts for suc cess in present day theatricals, and at the same time depicts scenes and conditions teaching a powerful moral ; and religious lesson. "The Light , Eternal" is a drama of the early Rom- ! an period, having to do with the persecution of the early Christians by the pagans under Emperor Diocletian. The Lyric. "The Kings of the Forest," the Selig photo-play which will be seen at the Lyric on Monday and Tuesday is one of the most entertaining and unique moving picture productions ever seen here. The play, while possessing romantic interest, is primarily concerned with the wild animals and the realistic depiction of the latter, in connection with the Pla - is one of the tnri11" ins features of the presentation. The Pictures were procured by the Seligs J by taking a menagerie to California and putting them on a 300 acre farm ture play. The Murrette. For Christmas week Murette patrons will receive a quality of photoplay amusement such as has never before been presented in Richmond at any pri ce. Each day throughout the week by special permission "The Star of Bethlehem," a three reel triumph of motion pictures, will be presented, which comes direct from New York city where it is shown Christinas Day. There is no greater Christmas week feature to he had than this wonderful picture, and it will no doubt be seen by thousands. Eat your Christmas dinner at the Westcott, 75 cents per ! plate, from 12 :20 to 2 :30. j thurs-sat-mon-tues j Relics of Pillories. Though the pillory has been abolished, there are still to be found In various parts of rural England relics of this old time method of punishment. One of the most complete examples may be seen within a few miles of the i metropolitan border. In the pictur esque village of Roydon. Essex, not only are the old stocks and whipping post still preserved, but close beside them stands also the wooden "cage" In which the roysterer of bygone days was incarcerated. Is there another such interesting trio of punitive relics to be found elsewhere in England? London Graphic. Cause 3 rid Effect. Berthoff told a story the other day which illustrates the conditions which formerly preailed on the "treasury fleet." When it is a matter of running down smugglers or putting an end to poaching or mapping a bad channel or destroying derelicts the cutters average 100 per cent of efficiency. "Few gunners could hit a target." ho said. "Really there was little need. They didn't use a loaded shell once In a lifetime. But now and then the board of Inspectors came on board, and then every one was worried and nervous until the ordeal was over. The Inspectors visited the cutter commanded by a friend of mine. He ordered out the firing squad. " 'Bang!" went the rifle. The projectile hit the target squarely in the center. " 'Cease firing,' ordered the captain happily. And he turned to the inspectors, pleased us Punch. 'There's no use wasting ammuuition.' he said. 'Our gunners can do that every time.' " Herbert Corey iu Cincinnati TimesStar.
