BOYS SHOULD BE GIVENJMAS AID Good Fellows Have a Chance to Help Little Chaps Who Need Aid.
The little girls of the city will have a fine Christmas. One hundred dolls, donated by the Palais Royal, will gladden the hearts of the poor girls, and convince them Santa Claus is a providing father who does not overlook any one at Christmas. But the boys of the city have been overlooked. The Palladium has a list of twenty deserving boys whom Santa may overlook if the Big Boys and the Good Fellows of Richmond don't get together and tell Santa Claus that the little chaps must be remembered on Christmas day. If some of the Good Fellows of the town, who want everybody to be happy on Christmas, will phone the Christmas Cheer editor, or call at the office, they will be provided with the names of some of the boys who must share the cheer and happiness of the approaching holiday. An Urgent Appeal. The Palladium is in receipt of the appended letter, which it gives publicity because of its sincerity and the nobleness of the writer. "I do not live in a hollow log nor in the shade of a tree, yet is there, can there be any help for me. I see that the poor people in this city are to enjoy something good for a Christmas dinner. Be the gifts of those who have more than their poorer brethren. I for one am one of the poorest persons in the city. "Being sick in September for three weeks, so that I could not do a particle of 'work. That let behind terribly in everything. When taken sick 1 had no cash to fall back on to help me out. And I have not caught up yet. So that I am not even, though I work every day. My wife Is not a healthy stout woman either, thought she does the best Bhe can under the present circumstances. I have one little boy going to school. My money I last received for work will be spent before I get another pay day. Unless those that are helping the poor will give a helping hand to us, amongst the rest, to gladden our hearts also unless we can be remembered amo'ng the rest of the poor. "My little boy expects something but 1 can not help him out but in a very small way. I hope you will inform some of those who are giving the poor to kindly remember us. And the remembrance will be thankfully received and gratefully acknowledged by us among the rest. "Please give this your careful consideration and set the wheels moving in our behalf. Sorry to let you know our plight. But please pardon the same." The Palladium has turned the letter over to an organization which will remember the family. CASE IS DISMISSED Because of insufficient evidence to sustain the charge contained in the affidavit. Prosecutor Allen today dismissed the charge against Harry Johnson in the Wayne circuit court. Johnson, who is a grocer at Centerville, shot Walter Williams, a local express driver on a Saturday night in August. Williams, with a party of young people were singing around a bonfire in the street when Johnson shot at the party, the bullet hitting Williams. YOUNG HUYLER IS KILLED BY ENGINE (National News Association) MORRISTOWN, N. J., Dec. 20 John F. Huyler, a son of the late millionaire candy manufacturer of New York, was killed today when a Lackawanna passenger train struek the automobile in which he was riding. Huyler was taken to a hospital, but died in a short time. He was nineteen years old and a student at Princeton university. In Indianapolis, Red Cross Christmas Seals are being sold by telephone. Both the Central Union Telephone company and the Indianapolis Telephone company have assigned special operators to the task of calling every subscriber and offering to take their orders for seals. The orders are theu delivered by automobiles and the money collected. The plan is so unique that it is bringing larger results than were anticipated. The first 200 calls made by the Indianapolis Telephone company brought orders for more than $50 worth of the little holiday sticker. The idea has been copied by several telephone companies in other towns, the companies realizing that in this way they make a distinct contribution to the work of selling the seals. The Red Cross Christmas seals are being sold in every state of the Union except four. This fact is all the more remarkable when it is recalled that the plan was not started until 1907. In that year Jacob Riis and Emily Biseel sold a Red Cross stamp in Delaware to earn funds for carrying on anti-tuberculosis work. They collected 13,000. The next year the national stamp came into existence under t auspices of the Red Cross Society and this year 85,000,000 seals were printed. Something of the increase in the popularity of the seal is shown by the increased sale in Indiana. In 1910 there were, sold in this state about 600,000 aadlaet year the sale amounted ta

TUFT WILL LEAVE F0RJ1G DITCH Presidential Party Leaves Tonight for Inspection of the Panama Canal.
(National News Association) WASHINGTON. Dec. 20 Accompanied by the largest private party which has ever traveled with a president of the United States, President Taft left Washington last night for the commencement of the third trip which a chief executive has ever made beyond the boundaries of his country. As in the case of the other two trips one made by President Roosevelt and the other by President Taft himself Panama is the object of the tour, and the canal, the subject of official inspection. Accompanying the President are Mrs. Taft, Mr. and Mrs. Charles P. Taft, the brother and sister-in-law of the president; secretary to the president and Mrs. Hilles, and a number of the members of the canal commission. None of the Taft children were included in the party, as Mi'ss Helen Taft recently returned from a tour of th Canal Zone with the secretary of war and Mrs. Stimson, while Robert Taft was unable to leave his studies and Charles Taft did not care to go. A large force of clerks from the White House and servants attached to the various members of the president's party were also housed in the two special cars which were attached to the "Key West Flyer" tonight. Special accommodations have been provided for all members of the party on the Arkansas, the battleship which will carry the party from Kew West to Panama, and back to Norfolk, and it is expected that the chief executive and his friends will suffer little discomfort from the ordinarily cramped quarters of the warship. President's Itinerary. According to the White House sohed ule the party will reach Key West Saturday afternoon, sailing at once for Panama. The dreadnought Delaware will carry the overflow of the presidential party and the small army of newspaper correspondents who will cover the trip. The three secret service men detailed to follow the president wherever he goes will be accommodated on the Arkansas. Upon arrival at Panama, probably on Tuesday next, the party will immediately disembark and the inspection of the great ditch will commence at once. Christinas Day will be spent at Christobal and a great stock of holiday goodies have been laid in for the occasion. After a four dayc' tour of inspection of the Canal Zone, the president, and his party will sail Prom Panama on the Arkansas and Delaware, on their return trip. The landing point this time will be Norfolk, and it is expected that the voyage will consume only about four days, as the president has given orders that he is to be back in Washington, without fail, in time to hold his annual reception at the White House a function which has not been missed for several decades. Upon his return to Washington it is expected that the chief executive will send the nomination of the new governor of the Canal Zone to congress and it is anticipated here that Col. Goethals, the constructor of the canal, will be the man named. WOMAN POINTS OUT A POLICE GRAFTER (National News Association) NEW YORK, Dec. 20. As calmly as though she were singling out friends Mrs., Goode, the woman who caused i the latest upheaval in the New York ! police department today picked out j Policeman J. J. Skelly as the man to I whom she and others of her ilk paid i graft for protection. The identificaj tion was made when Skelly was placed j on trial on charges growing out of the "vice trust" investigation conducted by the aldermanic committee. 1.244.000. Two years ago no 6eals were sold in Texas and last year that state : bought 1,250.000. On Friday evening", December 13th, a party of men sat at dinner at the University club in Indianapolis. They were planning how to extend the sale of Red Cross Christmas seals, for all of them were deeply interested in the advancement of the fight against tuberculosis. Somewhat of merriment had been made at the expense of the hoodoo date Friday the thirteenth, and it was discovered that the man who arranged the dinner invited just thirteen guests. One of the doctors present had drawn seat Xo. 13 at the table. "Gentlemen, this is more than a coincidence." said this doctor, after the jokes had passed around among those seated. "And if you will indulge me in a bit of family history I will tell you why. Tonight is Friday the thirteenth. There are thirteen of us at this table. I am Xo. 13. And just thirty-one years ago tonight, which date was also Friday the thirteenth, my father died of tuberculosis. At his bedside I pledged myself to devote my life to fighting the dread disease which had robbed me of a father just when I most needed his care. Gentlemen, I have kept the pledge. I have seen the dread disease rob many another boy and girl of father and mother. Each incident has renewed my determination, and I shall still be fighting this terrible plague when th$ grim reaper calls me from the fray.
ARREST OFFICERS Sterling Debenture Officers Arrested by Government. (National News Assoc iation! NEW YORK, Dec. 20 Six officers, including President F. W. LOCAL BUYERS. Many persons in Richmond and Wayne county, attracted by the flattering inducements of the company, invested heavily in the stock. ROBBER KILLS A DIAMOND MERCHANT (National News Association) CHICAGO, Dec. 20. J. H. Logue. a diamond merchant with a store in McVicker's theater building, was shot and killed today by a robber who entered the store and posed as a customer. The supposed customer asked to see diamonds. The men were alone in the shop, which was on the third floor. Other persons on the same floor heard a shot and rushed into the room occupied by Logue. He was dead when they arrived," a bullet having pierced his head. The tray was on the showcase, rifled of its contents. The murdered has escaped.
