Morgan admitted under pressure that many million dollars worth of securities had been issued by the New York Central through Morgan & Company -without additional sanction of the directors. Morgan admitted that his firm had been acting as a kind of fiscal agent for the Southern railway, but as there was no written agreement strictly speaking he would not designate that as fiscal agent. Morgan said he was only one of the voting trustees of the Southern Railroad. Asked if he believed railroads should be tied up to a private banking house Morgan said, ."I see no objection to euch procedure. Morgan appeared to be somewhat excited as Untermeyer fired his questions at him rapidly, and his answers became disconnected. Untermeyer went into the organization of the steel trust. S. Steel corporation, and who should not?" A. "I probably said who should stay off." The committee room was in an uproar when Mr. Morgan made this answer. "I will say," added the millionaire banker when the laughter had subsided, "that nobody went on the board without my approval. They were all responsible to me." Q. "Did you fix the prices at which the subsidiary firms came into the corporation?" A. "I approved them." Q. "Who put Mr. Frick on the finance committee?" A. "I did, I suppose." Q. "Who made J. P. "It turned out to be a good thing, but it did not look to be so at first when the stock was selling at ?S a share." The room again echoed Mr. Morgan's laughter. In answer to Mr. Untermeyer's queries, Morgan said he was not familiar with the First Security company, a concern operated by the First National bank to conduct stock operations, and added that he did not know much about the National City bank affairs. Asked if he was not a large stockholder in the National City bank. Morgan said, "Oh, I think not, I have only a million or so there." "Or in the National bank of Commerce?" asked Untermeyer. "No," replied Morgan, "I haven't a large interest there, only $5,000,000 more or less." Untermeyer took up the question o Daniel G. Reid's affiliations with Morgan & Company at the time the Bankers' Trust company was formed, Asked if Heid was a member of various boards Morgan insisted that he could not recall as he paid no attention to such minor details.
