Y CHANCES TO HELP THE POOR Good Fellows Have Ample Opportunity to Show that They Want to Help. The fate of an orphan in a home for children or of a dependant in an asylam of charity is preferable to that of a child whose widowed mother is trying to make a living over the washtub. Inmates of the Wernle Orphan's Home, for instance, will be remembered by hundreds of Lutheran congregations in the United States. Boxes of toys and gifts are daily received by the superintendent of the home. The board of control insists that Christmas be a day of joy for the orphaned boys and girls, and the superintendent spend many hours to make the day a bright one for his charges. Quite different is the lot of the urchin who has lost father or mother, and In squalor and poverty, wonders vaguely what Christmas means and why some children are so supremelyhappy and he so abjectly sad and downcast. There are hundreds of little boys and girls in Richmond who need tr know that there are Good Fellows here who appreciate how it feels to celebrate Christmas without cheer and pleasure. And there are also hundreds of Good Fellows who have decided that Christmas will give them a chance to show that they know these little fellows need to be surprised by Santa Claus. Frequent calls at the Palladium office these days have revealed many Good Fellows with hearts pulsating with- sympathy, and hands ready to (To the kind deed and execute the demands-of a charitable nature. The list of families that need help is a large one. It is growing daily. The Palladium is calling attention to more opportunities for the Good Fellows. Mother in Fairview sick, takes' in washing when in good health, two young boys working, two little girls at home. Husband dead, grandmother trying to support little grandchild. Husband deserted wife, babe of six months, young son and two little girls. Blind woman, supporting grandchild, aged 11. Widow supporting six children. Poor family near Hawkins' Springs, two children. Sick father, six in the family. FARMERS COMING TO RICHMOND Farmers are taking advantage of the dry roads to haul bailed hay and straw to the local markets. The highways leading to the city are dotted with farm wagons loaded with produce. Many farmers who held back their crops, waiting for prices to haise, have been tempted to upload surplus holdings now. The approach of Christmas is another reason that is bringing produce to the city. Farmers want ready cash to buy presents for their families. FRAUDS IN CUBA (National News Association) HAVANA, Dec. 17. Sensational reports that frauds amounting to over $100,000 had been found in the Cuban department of public works were circulated here today. These frauds, it was said, were in relation to street paving and swer laying contracts here. News Nuggets (National News Association) PITTSBURG, Pa., Dec. 17. "Cut the salve; can't get them over! Take your base! Your control's rotten!" were some of the things Policeman Chas. Calhoun's parrot hurled at him after escaping from its cage to a high window ledge. Calhoun is a baseball player in the summer. PH1LADELJHIA. Dec. 17. Mrs. Anne Oliver, who eloped from her home in Bristol Pa., with G. W. Birchet, a grave digger who deserted her here, says her action was due to the hypnotic influence Birchet had over her. NEW YORK. Doc. 17. -"Every housewife should have two nights off each week during which she could come into contact with other people and see things to relieve the monotony of her life." said Rev. Georae W. Grinton, Methodist Episcopal minister. CHICAGO, Dec. 17. Bernard Rogers, a ragged 8-year old boy, was found in a Chicago park watching squirrels burying peanuts and planning to steal their store. He was starving. BOSTON. Dec. 17. Fie, the Persian poodle dog, which has figured In several of Mrs. Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward's short stories, Is now the central figure in a suit brought against Mrs. Ward's estate for board for the dog. NEW YORK, Dec. 17. Mrs. Ethel Loraine Belmont, the show girl bride of Raymond Belmont, son of the multimillionairs who has been so lonely since she was separated from her 24-year-old husband now finds contentment in the companionship of a $550 Pekinese spaniel which she bought. ST. LOUIS. Dec. 17. In an effort to learn the business "from the ground up" Alden B. Swift, son of the raillionairs Chicago meat packer, donned overalls and Is working as a laborer In a packing plant hero.
SEWAGE DISPOSAL
. TO BE REMEDIED I President. B. A. Kennepohl of the board of works said today he would j dn ovorvthin in hi nower to have the i , , ' (i sewage condition at the i iicn in l x l jr east end of Kinsey, Lincoln and Pearl streets remedied. Mr. Kennepohl inspected the conditions, as the result of a complaint registered with the board of works several weeks ago by some of the West Richmond residents. The sewage empties at the top of the river bank and runs down the bank Treating a stench in summer. The mouth of the sewer is not more than thirtyfive yards from the houses on the streets which are drained by the sewer. Mr. Kennepohl believes that an elbow can be made to take the sewage from the top of the river bank to the river or nearer to it. If the pipe is extended below the bank it will help conditions the president of the board believes. View of Charles. City Engineer Charles stated that it was only a case of time when the city would be compelled to extend the sewer system to a place south of the city and have the sewage purified by a purifying plant. He said: "The state legislature nearly passed a law compelling all cities of Indiana to do this two years ago and the same act may be brought up at the next session and passed. If the law does compel the city to do this a reasonable length of time will be allowed the city to make the improvement which will be one of the biggest things ever attempted by the city. The cost will probably be $500,000 or more. "The sewage system is unsanitary, but the law will be passed for the benefit of towns and cities south of us who are subject to contamination as the result of our present system of running the sewage into the river. In view of this fact it would not be advisable to make an improvement on the west side which would only be temporary and expensive. The sewer pipes are only three feet in length and we would have to go through rock to get them to the bottom of the river bank." The plans of Raymond Heuehen Muncie, to be happily married of j on Christmas-were shattered this afternoon when he fell from a scaffold and broke his ankle. He was helping erect a fire escape at the Arlington Hotel. Heuehen and Carl Land were on a scaffold twenty feet above the side-1 walk on Elm street in the rear of the hotel when the sash cord which held the ladder scaffold broke, throwing both men to the sidewalk. The ankle was badly broken and he will not be able to work for weeks. Deaths and Funerals. MORROW Albert T. Morrow, aged 07 years, died Monday afternoon at him home, 319 North Thirteenth street. He is survived by a widow and one brother. J. E. Morrow. The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 o'clock from the residence. Burial in Earlham cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon or evening. Marriage Licenses. Robert Lindenberger, 21, silk weaver. Lewistown, Pa., and Norma Middlesworth, IS, city. I ATTEND 'Notional News Association) LONDON. Dec. 17. Unless affairs ! of state prevent King George will atj tend the memorial services to Whitej law Reid, late United States ambassador to the court of St. James on Friday in Westminster Abbey, it was , learned today. j This information came from a j source close to Lord Knellys, private ' secretary to the King. The American j society of London held a meeting at ; the Savoy today and drew up fitting j resolutions of regret for the passing I of the distinguished American diplo- , mat. Messages of sympathy continued to . pour into Dorchester house. Mrs. Reid, ; who was prostrated at her husband's ; death had somewhat recovered today, although she is unable to receive callers. SUIT ON ACCOUNT Complaint on account and to set aside sale of stock of merchandise was Sled in the Wayne circuit court this afternoon by the J. B. Moss company veisus Edgar E. Roney, and the Warden-Westcott Hotel company. The plaintiff demands $143.30. The complaint alleges that Roney became indebted to the plaintiff prior to September 4. 1912, and that on that date he sold his stock of merchandise and fixtures to the hotel company. The complaint asks that the sale and transfer bet set aside and judgment rendered. Palladium Want Ads Pay. CITY ADVERTISEMENT Department of Public Works. Office of the Board.
