TO GET Additions Will Soon Arrive Other Tenders Feed Monkeys Whisky. Superintendent Hollarn expects to close a deal before spring for the purchase of two cub bears for the Glen zoo to take the place of Bosco, the big bear which died recently. He expects to gt one from Kokomo, Ind., and one from Buffalo, N. Y. Big John, the owl, which was presented to the park by Martie Dolan and George Kindler, died last week. The owl was captured at Hagerstown recently, but was wounded when caught. Monkey medicine, whiskey, waB not prescribed for John. It might have saved the owl, Hollarn believes Hollarn last week received valuable information from the directors of the Wormwood Dog and Monkey show trainers which put on an exhibition at a local theater last week. Many new points relative to the care of monkeys was learned by the park superintendent. He was gratified to learn that he is not the only animal tender who feeds whiskey to monkeys. The trainer of the show told him that he gave his monkeys the finest brand of whiskey he could buy three times a day. Mr. Hollarn also received a letter from a man in Iouislana who agreed to furnibh the park with an alligator If the charges of transportation would be defrayed by the city Mr. Hollarn agreed to this and expects the new addition any time. I 16-tf SAVED THE COLORS A Hero Who Was Buried Wrapped In Mis Flag by the Enemy. During the Austro-Prussian war a body of Prussian soldiers came upon a ditch half full of wounded aud dying Austrinns. Among those who were badly wounded was n young officer. They found him lying on his back in the wet ditch. Touched with pity for him, some -of the Prussians went to him and wished to remove him so that he might be attended to by the surgeon. But he besought them to leave him alone, teliing them that he felt quite comfortable. Soon after this be died. Then wheu they lifted his body they found why he had begged them to leave him alone. He had been the standard bearer for his regiment. In the terrible battle of the day the flag bad been torn into tatters, and when he was sore wounded so that he soon must die his soldier spirit was still strong within him. and rather than let the "bit of rag" fall into the enemy's hand he folded it up and placed It beneath him so that noue might see it. This was why he would not let himself be moved by the kindly Prussian soldiers. lie would die protecting the precious flag. Uis foes were so touched by his no ble action that they would not take awny the trophy, but wrapped it around him that it might be buried with him. LANDS OF FIRE. Yet Iceland and Tierra del Fuego Are Glacier Bound Regions. It is rather singular that both of the "lands of Are" are near the cold extremities of the globe Iceland, far to the northward, and Tierra del Fuego, remotely south. Iceland, to the eye, seems at first glance to be better named by the cold appellation. Its glacial fields are not only numerous, but in some cases these and the connected snow stretches are hundreds of square miles In extent. But only a little travel into the interior, say to the site of the ancient Icelandic parliament at Thiugvallavntn, discloses miles upon miles of such desolation as Is possible only in a "land of fire." It is a very island of volcauoes. aud. while they have been exceedingly well behaved for a hundred years or so, the great hot springs in the neighborhood of Reykjavik, the capital, indicate that the subterranean heat if passive, is still very much alive. Huge glaciers also mark the "cold land of fire" at the other eud of the earth. Thus each of the two parts of the universe is properly named, whether the name be warm or cold. New York Press. FRIGHT IN BATTLE. How Grant Cured a Badly Scared Staff Officer. One of General Grant's newly appointed staff officers had never been in any serious engagement. But almost the first day that he reported to Grant he was placed under a fire of the hottest and most severe kind. The screaming of the balls, the roaring of the cannon and the sharp crack and rattle of the musketry thoroughly demoralized him. He became absolutely sick and paralyzed with fear. He was so weak from ucrvous excitement that he lost physical control over himself. General Grant came up at the very climax of his fright, and, noticing his pale face, his blue Jips and chuttering teeth, he said: "Captain, you are frightened. Thut is natural enough. You will get over it. Suppose," continued Grant, "I .should come to you with a hat obtaining ninety-nine white beans and one black one and I should ask you to thrust your hand into the hat at a venture and pick out the black bean. Do you think your chance of getting that black bean would be very good? Well, your chance for being hit under this fire is no greater than your chance for drawing the black bean." This officer at once took heart, and from then on he never showed the slightest sign of fear. Life. A DYED BEARD. It Probably Changed the History of the Whole Human Race. The most striking case in history of the importance of trifles is furnished by the story of Musa, the leader of the Moslem host which won from Christendom in three and a half years dominions which it took the soldiers of the cross twenty generations to win back. He had a red beard. This was a trifle. Musa, though a very great general, was a very vain man, and he dyed his beard black. This was another trifle. One of his captains chaffed him on the subject, and Musa forthwith had him stripped and scourged. For this, al the very height of his conqueriug career, Musa was recalled by the caliph and disgraced. This made it impossi ble for him to command the Moslem army at the battle of Tours, on the Is sue of which, as all historians agree, the destinies of Europe and perhaps of the whole human race depended. It is almost certain that if the genius of Musa had replaced the incompetence of the half dozen tribal leaders whose dissensions made victory Impossible the forces of Islam would have joined hands from the west to the east and inclosed Europe in their grasp. London Standard. Animals That Are Always Enemies. Many animals are born with an inherent antipathy for other animals. The excessive fear' shown by young rabbits which for the first time smell a ferret aud of youug turkeys which hoar the shrill cry of a hawk they have never heard or seen before are proved examples of the strength of these instinctive antipathies. But the case of the weasel and rat is. perhaps, more to be noticed because of the greater equality of the antagonists. The feud is so bitter that a meeting between them almost certainly means death to one or both. Friendships are not uncommon between the cat and dog and have been known between a dog and wolf, but the mutual attitude of the weasel and rat is invariably warwar that is waged to the death. THEATRICAL CALENDAR. Gennett Theater, Tonight "Mutt and Jeff.' The Lyric. -"Brutality." TodayThe Murrette. Today "His Way." "Mutt and Jeff." The one real acknowledged howling comedy success of the season, cornea to the Gennetth for an engagement of one night beginning Tuesday, Dec. 17. What? Why! "Mutt and Jeff of course. The whole country is ringing with laughter over the antics of these two funny fellows who owe their creation to the clever conception of Bud Fisher, the famous cartoonist. Gus Hill has built a play for their appearance, properly fitted to their peculiar style of entertainment. The Lyric. "Brutality" seems an honest but a rather unfortunate title for so good a picture; such a name is hardly a recommendation. The offering is one of those suggestive Biograph sermons, like "The String of Pearls," but it is better. One finds a good deal of sincerity in it, and a good deal of humart truth. There is also individuality of style and something of progressiveness and originality, which promises well for the future of the picture business. The Biograph producer plays upon his characters as though they were musical instruments, and we are full of admiration for the impressions he is able to make, just by facial expressions. In his beautiful photographs his characters appear as through fine opera glasses. Every change of expression is more clearly pictured than if they were really before us, and one isn't embarrassed drinking the effect in. It is not truly soul-music? Can such impressions be created in any other way than on the screen? The Murrette. The second day's program for Christmas Greeting week at the Murlette promises to be equally as interesting and amusing as was that of yesterday. For today there are three very interesting picture plays with excellent plots and fine scenic embellishments. "His Way" is the title of a most interesting drama. "A Double Reward," is a new western drama with startling situations and thrilling climaxes. For a mirth provoker it will be hard to beat "At Liberty, a Good Press Agent." Phil Space, press agent, is employed to exploit Miss Alden, stage star. Phil meets Miss Alden who wishes a story published about her dog. Phil springs a story of his own .that Miss Alden is fearlessly nursing a smallpox victim, the health authorities believe the story and isolate the players, quarantining the theater. After an interview with the manager there is, "At Liberty, Good Press Agent." Tomorrow the feature will be a two reel military drama entitled "Blood Will Tell." Give and Take. Howell Does he take things philosophically? Powell Yes. but he doesn't part with them philosophically. Woman's Home Companion. True merit is like a river the deeper it is the less noise It makes. Hasutt. Sarsapari.la Acts directly and peculiarly on the blood; purifies, enriches and revitalizes it, and in this way builds up the whole system. Take it. Get it today. It Worked Both Ways. A good story is told of a judge who was trying a burglar. The defense was that the prisoner had been hypnotized and did not know what he was doing. The skeptical jury, however, found him guilty, and the judge promptly sentenced him to ten years in prison. Then he added in a kindly tone: "The same" power which enabled you to commit burglary and not know it ought also to enable yon to suffer imprisonment with hard labor and not be aware of it. I would therefore advise you to send for the hypnotist and have him make you unconscious for the eutire term of your imprisonment." Best of the Hlgh-Grade

MAGNIFIED HER WEALTH. A Five Dollar Bill That Saarn.d to Be a Small Fortune. The woman banded her friend a flTe dollar bill. "See the number of small fives engraved on it?" 6he asked. "When I was in LVumark a few years ago such a bill as that caused toe a great deal of amusement, and 1 had to surrender one before I could prove myself clear of a false belief regarding my finances.
