Heart to Heart Talks. By EDWIN A. NYJB.
New York, the most wicked city in the world, strange as it may seem, has almost been Bhocked by the conditions first brought to light, by the murder of Gambler Rosenthal and now being gradually exposed by investigations conducted by the aldermanic committee. Wednesday a Mrs. Goode, a demimonde, testified that there were 35,000 women on Manhattan island alone who led immoral lives. Here is her testimony verbatim: "I should say about 35,000 in Manhattan. I knoWabout how many flats and houses there are and how many they shelter, and how many are immoral 'on the quiet.' I should say there are about 35,000 professionals. This number, I should say, would take in the girls who work in he stores and go into the streets at night to get money to live on." And this vast army of women, more sinned against than sinning, who number ten thousand more than the population of Richmond, are the common prey of the New York police, which Mayor Gaynor has praised as the finest in the world. "Protection" money is collected from these miserable creatures but no protection has been given them. They are part of the stock in trade of the New York "vice trust," the principal stockholders of which are the police officers. It has been easy, too, for the police to graft off these women, because the police know them to be outcasts and shunned by society, which will not lift a finger to protect them or to improve their condition. But there are hopes that New York's thousands of respectable, honest and clean minded citizens will be so sickened by the shocking conditions now being brought to light that they will rise In revolt, take the government away from the grafting, dirty politicians who now have the great metropolis in their grasp, then rebuild the police department from top to bottom and place the lawless underworld under the control of a "vice" commission which will bring order out of chaos. But the saving of fallen women in New York and the reclamation of debased men, as in every other American city, great or small, must be delayed until that time the lawmakers of this land place upon the statute books such laws as are required to improve the social and economical condition of the masses. Poverty is the root of most crimes, but under the existing order of things poverty is fostered. That is why thousands of men are flocking to the standards of Socialism. That is why thousands of women are going into the streets to sell their bodies. God speed the day when this great republic awakes to its shame and extends the helping hand to its millions of people who are crying to it for protection.

A VALUABLE WORD. There Is one word of the English language more important than any other if you would succeed In business. It is in the line of common courtesy, and the unsparing use of it imposes no hardship. It should come trippingly from your tongue. The word is "please." Said a manager of a large retail establishment to one of his floorwalkers: "After Saturday night I shall not need your services. Please look for another place." "Why?" "Merely because you will not realize the importance of courtesy in business life. I have asked you again and again to use the word 'please' wherever it can be employed. Either you cannot see the necessity of the word or you stubbornly refuse to obey my orders. In either event I cannot use you.
"Moreover," continued the manager, "you will never succeed anywhere in dealing with the public if you let 'please stick in your throat. If your discharge shall have tuught you this lesson It may prove of value." The manager was right. Business is built upon service, and service to be effective must be courteously rendered. "Thank you" is important, but "please" is essential. "Number, please?" says central, and you respond in kind. "Fares, please," says the conductor, and you go after your coin with alacrity. "Floor, please," says the elevator man, and you reply urbanely. "What counter,' please?" asks the floorwalker, and your estimate of the establishment goes up a notch. "What can I show you, please?" says the clerk, with a smile, and you are in . humor to buy. A mechanical word? Nevertheless it lubricates the situation. It is oil on the troubled waters of barter, stilling the waves for a large circumference. It is good to use the word elsewhere than in business. It helps anywhere and everywhere, but in business it is a sine qua non and scarcely may be employed too often. If you would get anywhere take the open sesame "please" along with you.
"Of 82,224 school children recently examined by medical inspectors in a large city-school system, only 2S.721 were free from physical defect; the remaining $53,503 were found physically defective in one or more particulars."

This statement, recently issued by the United States Bureau of Education, should put a quietus on the complaints of a number of Richmond people who have been objecting to medical inspection of children in the local public schools. Any number of Richmond children have been found to be suffering with some grave ailment or physical defect, which, in many cases, makes them unfit for school attendance. Medical inspection of school children tends to improve the race, providing the parents of the children will co-operate with the school authorities by promptly acting on the suggestions made by the medical examiners.
How to Eat a Boiled Egg. A great many people think the only delicious way to eat a boiled egg is ir its shell, and so that the top may be carefully and easily cracked off there have been devised egg scissors, which are fascinating trifles for the table service as well as for actual use. Each pair of scissors is in the form of a gay little chicken. Each has a ruby eye, and the steel Is gilded. The finger loops of the scissors are left the natural steel color for contrast, and the size is about five inches long. They are delightful for an invalid's breakfast tray and very tidy as well as cute for a child, though their use is becoming general whenever the boiled egjc appears.
Cooking Accounts. The word cook, used in the sense of "cook up accounts," is generally put in quotation marks, but the phrase has been almost long enough in use to give it Indisputable standing. Smollett wrote of "cooking accounts" in 1751. and proofs were "cooked" a century earlier, but somehow "cook" remains what the dictionaries sniff at as "colloquial" in this sense, while "concoct," which means to cook or boil together, has the status of a fully accepted word. The Romans used "concoquo" and the simple "coquo" alike in the metaphorical sense of pondering and devising, but the obvious metaphor of "cooking accounts never occurred to them.
