COMMITTEE MAY - SPLIT ON BILL Refuses to Comment on the Meeting of Progressives in Chicago.
(National News Association) WASHINGTON, Dec. 13 A split between the Democrats an4 Republican members of the Clapp campaign Investigating committee is threatened because of the action of Chairman Clapp in introducing a bill respecting the sending of contributions for presidential primaries or elections from one state to anoiner. All members agree that some legislation is .needed. The Democrats, however, protest that Clapp should not. have introduced his measure until all the hearings had ended. At the conclusion of these hearings, it is believed, the Democrats will promulgate their own legislation independently of Chairman Clapp and will seek to get a party indorsement of their measure.

The horn of the unicorn was reputed Instantly to reveal poison in a dish by sweating blood, and great was the rivalry as to the possession of the finest specimen while this belief still flourished. Charles the Bold proudly paraded six, two of them eight feet long, .two six feet, two five feet. According to Benvenuto Cellini, "the finest ever 'seen, which had cost 17,000 ducats of the Camera," was the one for which at the pope's command he made a deBism, "the finest thing Imaginable, modfled half on a horse and half on a stag, with a very fine mane and other adornments." Coryat speaks of the one at St. Denis as about three yawls long, and Windsor had two of four ells. The real "UBicorn" In many cases seems to have been the narwhal. London Chronicle.
BY ESTHER GRIFFIN WHITE. The Red Cross Stamps. Thv are on sale all over town.
Wayne County has fifty thousand to sell. Fifteen thousand have already been disposed of. Th next two weeks should see the sale of the balance. This city has always been generous in its purchase of the red seals the proceeds from which go toward the fund to fight tuberculosis. Much has been said about this fight recently. And much more will be said. One of the most important local civic movements is that undertaken by the Wayne County Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis. The definite object being to erect a hospital for the care of hopeless ' cases in this country. The beginning of this can be done with about one thousand dollars. ! That is, with that amount the tents or "shacks" can be put up under a certain form of organization and the fight against the terrible scourge in this locality commence. ; It's a crying necessity. : The writer in this column a week or so ago cited certain instances. 1 Of how these infect houses and other people. That these hopeless cases should be segregated is without question. That there is far more danger in I this community than the average cit
izen is aware of is the fact. Very few people notice things they are not personally interested in, or affected by, unless their attention is forcibly turned in the former's direction. That Wayne County should take care of this class of citizens the majority of whom are unable to financially take care of themselves is admitted.

If you're going to do a thing, do it The writer freely admits that the concert was to have been given not alone for the pleasure it might give to those who attended it but to make some money for herself. But an excellent opportunity presented itself to start a fund for the hospital, so she will turn over the surplus, after all expenses are paid to the Association. It's up to the public to respond. The concert will be given by regular concert performers from ou' of town and will entertain the audience in the manner of such affairs. In the meantime, the red cross se;ils are on sale everywhere and are only five cents. For the benefit of out of town people over the county who may wish to contribute to the fund fnrough attending the concert which, it is to be 'remembered, is the fir Ft Sunday afternoon in January it may be said that it will begin at three in the afternoon and continue about an hour, making interurban connections easy. Other cities and communities in the s'ate are collecting money lor this purpose. Fifteen thousand dollars was recently subscribed in Kvansville. The truth is that it is going to be a matter of but a short time until tuberculosis is either stamped out entirely or reduced to a minimum in the disease column. But it can't be done without organized and determined effort. And the best way seems to be communal. When every county takes care of its own cases segregates the hopeless and dangerous, thus doing away with infection of people and houses a vast leap forward will have been taken. Let Wayne County begin.

Only six cases of scarlet fever are now in Richmond. Last month the disease was very prominent, but not many new cases have been reported this month Ur. Davis said the people who are having the disease now should consider it a blessing rather than a misfortune, as it is a disease which cannot be contracted more than once, and this year no cases of a malignant form have been discovered.

on. The fifty thousand should be dispos-1 ed of before Christmas. j A portion of this money will go to ; the local fund. The writer has also called attention to the concert to be given under her auspices in the Murray theater on the first Sunday afternoon in January. After all expenses are paid, she will turn over to the Association the sur-, plus. j While this will not be great, even if the house is sold out, from the fact that only a popular price, fifty cents, will be charged, it will add to, or start : a hospital fund. j There have been some questions j relative to the time, Sunday afternoon, j The fact is that Sunday afternoon is j becoming more and more used for ! high class concerts. j Not only in certain portions of the country but all over. j The Indianapolis Symphony orches- j tra gives two concerts each month in j the Murat theater. Fear of the Dark.
Are you afraid of the dark? Most children are and many grownups. Cveii the bravest of men, in a house of whi'-h he knows every square foot, feels more at his ease when the light are up than when he is in the dark. The reason, psychologists say. is that darkness always spelled danger to our savage ancestors. When man was all but a wild beast, living in the open among knottier animals, his ingenuity made him their equal in the daytime. But in the night he was helpless against a -rotn-li-ing foe, and darkness often meant death. And. in spite of our civilization, this instinctive hatred of darkness still survives though in a weakened form. Pearson's.
