TROUBLE IN STORE FOR CHICAGO NOW Haywood Arrives There to Make Plans for a Desperate Strike.
(National News Association) CHICAGO, Dec. 11. Win. D. Haywood, formerly an officer of the Western Federation of Miners, now a leader of the Industrial Workers of the World, is in Chicago today considering the advisability of organizing a general strike of unskilled laborers. The efforts of the strike leader will be centered, it was intimated, among employes at the "stock yards and steel mills. "There is a feeling of unrest among the employes at the stock yards and the steel mills here," said Haywood. "We are going to try to crystalize that sentiment, into the biggest strike we have yet attempted. I came here because I have learned that Chicago, the greatest industrial center of the world, is in need of our organization and methods. "Workmen here need better working conditions and better pay, principally the former. We are going to get it for them. And our way of getting it usually means a desperate strike. And it also means victory for us in the end, no matter what the cost. "We already have several locals at the stock yards. It will be an easy matter to organize more. There will be no demand for a closed shop or demands of that kind. We simply want better working conditions."
FARMERS PROTECTING RABBITS AND QUAILS (Palladium Special) HAGERSTOWN, Ind., Dec. 12. Farmers here, for the first time in many years, are free from the annoyance of
j trespassers during the hunting seai son, due to the fact that the farmers 'have banded together in a sort of pro
tective association for the preservation of game birds, rabbits and squirrels. No hunter is allowed access to any farm hereabouts. In consequence game has multiplied. Quails are scarce, however, and farmers are bent on preserving them, as they see in thjm a valuable insect destroyer. Because of the protection quails are becoming tame, and it is no uncommon sight to see the meating with the barnyard fowls. Farmers are providing shelter for the quailB.

FLED FROM HIS BRIDE.
Romantic Story of the Marriage of General Sam Houston. In "As I Remember Recollections of American Society During the Nineteenth Century," is a romantic story of General Sain Houston, whose "appearance was patrician and courtesy that of the Inborn gentleman." "I have spoken of General Houston's appenrance. I now wish to refer to his fine sense of honor. He was married on Jan. 22, 1829, to Miss Eliza Allen and separated from her directly after the marriage ceremony in, it is said, the most painful circumstances. The wedding guests had departed and General Houston and his bride were sitting alone by the fire when he suddenly discovered that she was weeping. He asked the cause of her tears and was told that she never loved him and never could, but had married him solely to please her father. " 'I love Dr. Douglas,' she added, 'but I will try my best to be a dutiful wife to you.' " 'Miss,' said General Houston, even
waiving the fact that he had just married her, 'no white woman shall be my slave. Good night!' "It is said that he mounted his horse and rode to Nashville, where he resigned at once his office as governor and departed for the Cherokee country, where and elsewhere his subsequent career Is well known. Having pro cured a divorce from his wife, he married Margaret Moffette in the spring of 1840."

How New York's Grill Room Prices Hit the Blue Grass Brother. After his brother had been in New York a little more than a year a Keatuckian decided to pay him a visit. Hoping to surprise his brother, the Kentuckian did not apprise his brother of his intentions. Arriving at 9 o'clock in the morning, he asked to be directed to a good eating house. The taxicab pilot steered his course for the largest, costliest and most fashionable hotel grill room on Broadway. Being a stranger In a strange land and hungry, the Blue Grass brother ordered a regular home meal. When he got the check from the waiter its size staggered him. He wasn't accustomed to New York hotel prices. After verifying the correctness of his bill at the cashier's desk and being insulted by the waiter for tipping him 25 cents, the visitor started out to look for his brother, whose office he found about 1 o'clock. In response to his. Inquiry as to his brother's whereabouts a clerk said: "He's over eating at the Blank hotel's new grill room." "Go slow, friend. Only a millionaire could overeat nt the Blank hotel. I know, because I had breakfast there myself this morning." Louisville Times.
From Jail to the Bench. Francis Pemberton (1G25-97) was imprisoned in the Fleet for debts contracted during a period of youthful extravagance. While in jail he applied himself to the study of law and came to be regarded as a kind of legal oraclo by his fellow prisoners, who nicknamed him "counselor." With the fees they gave him for legal advice he bought books to continue his studies. He then prevailed upon his creditors to grant his release from rrison that he might the sooner earn money to pay off his debts. Called to the bar in 1G54, after a brilliant career in the palace court at Westminster and subsequently in the house of lords, he became a puisne judge. He was knighted in 1G75 and ultimately, on the dismissal of Scroggs, was made lord chief justice in 1G31. Loudou Standard.
The Sea Horse. This fish is found in the Atlantic ocean around the coast of Spain, the south of France, in the Mediterranean and in the Indian ocean. Sea horses are very small and have been found often curled tip in oyster shells. The head is much like that of a horse, and the rings around the body and tail resemble those of some caterpillars. The habits of these fishes are singular and interesting. They swim with a wavlug motion and frequently wind their tails around the weeds and rushes. They have fins to sustain them in the water and even in the air. They live on worms, fishes, eggs and substances found in the bottom of the sea.
The Gobi Desert. The great desert of Gobi which Is partly in China, partly in Manchuria, partly in Mongolia and partly in Siberia, is traversed by tlie oldest transportation lines in existence. It lias a caravan route over which tea and silk'laden camels have traveled toward Europe for 3.000 years, and yet from the time when K lblai Khan macadamized the road until the time wbeu the Russian railroad paralyzed it by the competition of steam no one of the merchants wh traveled over it turned either to the risrlit or to the left to tell Europe and the Occident of the wonders or the terrors of that unknown land.
Hard to Please. Mr. Snaggs was accosted on the street the other day by a beggar win was covered with a very remarkable mass of patched and ragged garments and who said: "Mister, haven't you some oldclothep you could give a fellow?" Snaggs surveyed the beggar from head to foot and then asked: "Are not the clothes you have oo old enough for you?"
(National News Association) CHICAGO, Dec. 12. Leaders of the Progressive party to attend the twoday general conference over organizations left Chicago today. Among them went Col. Roosevelt, bound for his home in New York. The conference came to an end last night with a meeting in the La Salle hotel. In the meantime the national committee of the party had formulated a number of definite plans for organization and the work, with a branch in Washington. The organization work will be conducted from New York. The publicity and legislative reference bureaus will be in Washington. Medill McCormick, national committeeman from Illinois, and vice chairman of the national committee, will maintrain an office in Chicago, but extensive quarters will not be opened here for the present. The national committee, at its closing session here, provided that the recall should be operative against officers or special committees of the Progressive national committee. The officers of the committee may be recalled at any time by a vote of the majority of the members of the committee. It is also possible under the rule
to recall members or officers of the executive committee. One faction of the party is said to have desired the recalL of George W. Perkins, head of the executive committee. Special meetings of the committee to act on a recall may be held on a petition signed by a fourth of the membership. antsHhavefive noses.
The Sense of Smell Is Very Important to These Insects. In their antennae, or feelers, ants have five noses, each of which has its own duties to perform. One nose tells the am whether It Is In its own aest or that of an enemy: another nose discriminates between odors of acts of the same species, but of different colonies; a third nasal or-
j gan serves the purpose of discerning I the scent laid down by the ant's own j feet, so that it may be able to retrace i the way quite easily; a fourth nose ! smells the larvae aDd pupae, and tbe fifth Dose detects the presence or an ; enemy. If an ant be deprived of a certain j nose, it will live peaceably with eneraies, but if it retains its flftb nose it ' will fight the alien to the death. There i is a difference in the functions of nose j one and nose five, although they appear to be somewhat alike, j This sene of smell does not come j till the ants are three days old. If. therefore, ants only twelve hours old i are placed among others, belonging to j different colonies, they will grow up i quite amicably and not understand ; that they are a mixed lot, because I they will have grown up with Ideas of 6cent in accordance with their surroundings. Tbe sense of smell to them is as Important as tbe sense of sight i to human beings.
