CONVERTING BAILS INTO PENCIL WOOD Farmers Selling Rail Fences to Big Pencil Companies Who Need the Wood.
The rail fence, one of the oldest and most common articles of the pioneer days of Wayne county, is rapidly disappearing and within a few years more will not be in evidence. There are many reasons for the change among them being the scarcity of timber which makes the logs, which
formerly went to the fences, more valuable for other purposes. Then again the old style fencs took up a large amount of land, too much in this age. The wire fence, the chief competitor of the rail fence, prevents the farmers from tilling a strip from four to six feet while the old fence left a strip fteen feet or more untitled. Again the fences which are replacing the log fences in this country are not so easily torn down by stock and thus save the farmer much time and labor. Within the last few months, however, a new reason has come up for the abandonment of the old log fence. The great pencil houses of the country are experiencing trouble in finding straight grained woods for their business and have found that the rails in many of the Indiana fences are suited admirably to this purpose. The remuneration given the farmers for the logs is more than sufficient for the building of modern fences Representatives of the big pencil houses have
been through Wayne and surrounding
counties buying up rails.

Oldest Candy In World Is Licorice. Most of the black licorice comes from Spain, where it is made f rem the juice of the plant and mixed with starch to prevent it from melting in hot weather. The licorice plant is a shrub about three feet high and grows wild where its roots can reach the water. It growa largely on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. As the valley of the Euphrates contained one of the earliest civilizations in the world, it is probable that licorice is about the oldest confection in the world and that the taste which boys and girls like so well today was enjoyed by the boys and girls of Babylon and Nineveh 3,000 years ago. Getting at the Truth. Was he rich or poor? She wanted to find out before she gave him her answer. Thinking deeply a moment, she said: "I fear we should not get along well. You are too extravagant." "Extravagant!" he repeated. "On the contrary, I am very economical. Why. I have to be." "Then I can never be your wife." "Because I am economical?" he queried. "No," she answered; "because you have to be.' Boston Transcript.

BOARD INSPECTED SITE OF WAREHOUSE The board of works In a body this afternoon investigated the advisability of allowing the International Harvester company to run a railroad track across Neff street at the site of the proposed new warehouse on Ft. Wayne avenue.
The company agreed to rent the building which will be constructed by the Miller Brothers' Hardware company. The action of the board probably will be in favor of this, as a brick street will be made if the request is granted.
