(Continued from Page One) taught. St. Andrew's and St. John's have born the heavy expense of maintaining these schools without a murmur. Brave, intelligent, physically capable of withstanding hardships, the pioneer Germans arrived in this city with their wives and families, to find themselves in the midst of strange and baffling conditions. And yet they not only gained a foothold here, but also were courageous enough to found churches and schools where they might worship and be educated in their native tongue. A close estimate based on the figures of the census of 1910, indicates that at least 7,000 persons in Rich
mond are of German descent. There are 1,814 persons whose parents were born in the Fatherland, and 734 native Germans here. On these figures it is safe to estimate that more than 7,000 persons here are of German origin. The tide of immigration turned to Richmond between 1830 and 1840, and the fathers of many residents came in that period. The original settlers were nearly all of Hanover and many Came from the district lying about Osnabruck. Active Business Men. 1 A glance at the signs above the stores anywhere in the city today is sufficient to show how many avenues of effort they are engaged in and how closely they are associated with every phase of commercial activity. They have almost appropriated exclusively to themselves the big downtown dry goods stores. They are to be found in almost every line of commercial and professional activity. Thousands of their descendants are skilled mechanics that have contributed largely to the wealth of the . city. They are found occupying positions of confidence and trust in many spheres. If we seek to know whether these people are home lovers and home owners all we have to do is to turn to the south side, whole sections of which have been made their own, and where hundreds of substantial homes
GOOD BLOOD. Given good, clean, healthy blood, Nature will do the rest with any case of catarrh, Inflammatory rheumatism, scrofula, eczema, erysipelas, boils, pimples or skin disease of any kind. Good blood invariably means vigorous appetite, good digestion and strength. Thus it stands to reason that an effective "alterative" or blood purifier, while it will not cure all diseases, will help in fighting any disease and will cure those mentioned above, all of "which come from bad blood. Forty years ago Dr. A. C Simpson of Richmond, was known as one of the most successful physicians In three states. His success was founded almost exclusively on one prescription, the most powerful blood purifier ever known. After his death this prescription was regularly put up as Dr. A. B. Simpson's Vegetable Compound. It has been used extensively all over the country, and in forty years has never failed, even in that most
dreadful of all blood diseases, syph-
illis in its worst stage. And when an alterative will do that it of course cleans and rebuilds blood affected with other troubles. Simpson's Vegetable Compound is purely vegetable, and as harmless as it is effective. It is sold at 1.00 per bottle at all drug stores. Advertisement.
testify eloquently to the thrift and energy of this race. As a general rule it does not take them long to claim as their own where they live. It seems an inherent trait
j of theirs to acquire title to property
shortly after they are married. They pride themselves on the appearance of their homes, and the environs indicate both thrift and pride in ownership. It is almost unnecessary to point out how valuable these forces have been to the progress of the city, or how excellent a foil they are to ignorance.
t bigotry and dirt. The Germans of this
city are bluff hearty companions, who can be depended on to carry out their promises under all conditions. In spite of a sturdy Americanism nearly all our German citizens have in addition a warm feeling for their
native land. Many , of the older Germans served in the army and through the Militaer Verein still keep in touch with the military spirit of Germany. At frequent occasions the local society receives communications from the military authorities in the Fatherland. Besides, there are a great many German fathers and mothers who speak very little English, and although their children speak the English language and are thoroughly Americanized, the sentiments of the parents Btill cling fondly to the little German villages of their nativity. The activities of the religious organizations of the Germans cannot be overestimated. The German Catholic church is one of the potent influences for good in the community, and the two Lutheran churches, perhaps the largest Protestant churches in the city, have at all times inculcated principles that make for good citizenship. Both the Catholic and Lutheran churches have benevolent organizations that look after the sick in their congregations and pay benefits. An acquaintance with the Germans, which reveals their broad optimism, their devotion to the country, their probity and thrift, shows that the city has every reason to be proud of them. The Germans delight in a broad spirit of toleration and do not hesitate to take a determined stand on questions that would restrict their personal liberty. Are Poor Politicians. The Germans of Richmond are poor politicians. They say so themselves. The reason is that they desert party lines on the smallest provocation and give their allegiance to the candidate who pleases them. The biggest myth of the city is the cry of "delivering the German vote." It has never been so in
the many years that Germans have resided here. This observation holds true of Germans the world over, however. At that, the Germans have had a good share of representation in the city council and other governing bodies, though if they had the knack of sticking together and concentrating their votes, 'the official roster of city and county offices would occasionally resemble the municipal list of a German city.
