TUBERCULAR HOSPITAL NEEDED
Conditions in This City and County Call for Special Consideration to "White Plague" Patients Who Are a Menace to the Health of the Community.
BY ESTHER GRIFFIN WHITE. There are lots of thlng3 that the citizens of a community know little of until their attention is called to it. We pursue our daily way absorbed in our own affairs and reck little of the tragedy round the corner. Or the menace next door. Very few there are in this town who have any conception of the ravages of one of the most deadly enemies of the human race tuberculosis. We read about it. We hear about it, an occasional case comes under our intimate observation. But of its terrors its local terrors we comprehend little. It is therefore interesting to know that the Wayne County Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis is starting in to make an organized effort to impress the county public with the necessity of stringent remedial measures. One of these is the erection of a hospital for the care of advanced tubercular cases. As It is now," unless those afflicted with the "white plague" take steps early enough to get admitted to the state sanitarium at Rockville which does not admit those whose cases are regarded as entirely hopeless or have enough money to go out West or to pay for special treatment, they must remain Jn ..their homes or somebody else's home, and, in nine cases out of ten, infect those with whom they stay and who have to care for them. .There was a case in this city, in instance, of a self-suporting woman of excellent family, who, afflicted with the disease, could not be cared for in the Reid Hospital nor at the County Farm nor at the Home for the Friendless, for obvious reasons. So, as the writer understands it if she accurately has the story the woman was advised to go to Indianapolis, where, through some arrangement, she could be taken care of in that city's dispensaries. . She had no home. r Naturally her friends hesitated to take her in. So she was forced to "sponge on another town" as, it was expressed for what care and attention she received. .Wayne county should have a hospital to take charge of such cases. .But the greatest danger lies in infection. ..The writer has been told of a case and these cases are, it must be remembered, those bo -advanced that nothing can be donev for... them in which a member of a family, which lived in a small four room cottage, occupied the front room, a typhoid patient the second, the kitchen and a small bedroom off the latter being used by the rest of the household who were not at all unnumerous. .The tubercular patient had reached the helpless stage and also the stage where Infection lurked for any one or everyone who helped care for him. If the County had had a hospital where such of its citizens who were so afflicted could be cared for, the Infection consequent upon this case would have been avoided. For tuberculosis not only infects people bat houses. , Houses where tubercular patients have long lived and died have been known to infect their unconscious later tenants. "People mysteriously contract tuberculosis, or are accounted to have done so mysteriously, when the reason
Is simple enough through this explanation. The truth is that nothing is more imperatively needed in Wayne County than a hospital of this character. It would take a compartively small sum to establish it. And its benefits would be enormous. It is an investment which would pay heavy returns in the way of improved public health. The only way to stamp out this disease is to segregate its advanced cases. And this can only be done through the medium of a special hospital. Surely this county is rich enough and philanthropic enough to take care of its own people. And it is progressive enough to see the necessity for a concerted civic effort to stamp out this awful1 human scourge. For notwithstanding the Get-Well-Quick cures that are advertised it has, so far, eluded the science of medicine. If taken in time certain forms can be cured. Or minimized. But after it reaches a certain stage especially in the lungs, it is invariably fatal. And that, is the time for the public to step in and protect itself. Through segregation and proper care. No state is strong that does not look to its physical foundations. It is the hardy race that lives lt is the enervated, disease-soaked Tone that degenerates. We are coming round to it by seeing that it's the ounce of prevention that is the thing worth while. Hence the attention given to the young of the species. The investigations and recommendations toward the conservation of health. And in the formative states of the human entity. Illustrated by medical and dental in-

spections of the schools and through other mediums of prevention. . But, notwithstanding the propaganda carried on - within the past few years toward the elimination of drugs and a reversion to nature, we still find people sleeping with tightly closed windows. Families where tubercular ravages have been deadly have been known to sleep without a window open. Death after death would occur but the living would still pursue their fatal way. Go up and down the streets after retiring hour in this city, you will find very few houses with windows open an Inch, to say nothing of pulled as far down as they can be pulled. People who boast of sleeping witb lots of fresh air don't do it. Those who waken with headaches and "that dull feeling" could get up as fit and fresh as a daisy if they'd sleep with their windows down at the top. Instead they mope round, take a headache powder, which makes 'em feel worse than ever, retire to their rooms, get into bed, pull the covers over their ears and wish they were dead. What they need isn't headache powder but a large dose of common sense. There is no reason why tuberculo
us should not be held in check in this community. I And could be if the citizens would ' get together, establish a hospital for'
tne class or cases indicated ana evolve some means through which the hospital could be sustained. It would only take a few thousand dollars. Let every one come out Friday night to the meeting the Association will hold in the Commercial club rooms and lend a voice if not a hand
