Instinct ButMore than mere Instinct of shelter and of rest enters into the making of a hnman home. A home is a center. It Is the one spot In the whole unliverse. Draw about it all the concentric lines you like, but there it always is at the heart of things the center of all. 1 Home is more than a place of comfort I It Is the treasure house of life's dearest riches. I Sentiment clings about it Absence from it only makes the heart grow fonder. Wander where you may, always do your thoughts turn toward your home. In all the desert of life It Is the one oasis. In all the ocean of life it is the one sure anchor. Homesickness? i Least of all feelings to be ashamed f, it betrays no weakness of mind or heart It is one of the noblest emotions that has ever stirred a human spirit. ; What makes a home? Not four walls nor sumptuous appointments. It is the home spirit Where that abides is home. Because Like heaven, home is not so much a place as a state of being. Where the spirit of the home is, whatever the surroundings, whether that spirit abides by the parlor grate or by the kitchen stove there is home. The spirit of home! How gently it touches every homely thing and makes it dear. How it soothes the hurt made by the world outside. How it steals away the stlDg of outrageous fortune. A home is more than a hospital. ! Your home! i In what other safe asylum do you find your better self? Where else may you be left to dream your sweetest dreams? Sitting by your own hearthstone you know all )that is intimate and dear to human living. You are in your true environment Cherish your home. However poor, however rieh it may be, make and keep It what It oujcht to ibe. And if so it will make and keep you what you ought to be.

The Burglar Scare.

HAWKER WAS ECCENTRIC.

An English Post and Clergyman Who Married His Godmother. Robert Steven Hawker, poet and tear of Norwenstow, England, was an eccentric person. In his younger days he used to danb tbe village physician's horse with stripes of paint until the animal looked like a zebra and then summon the physician hastily to a a urgent case miles away In toe country. Two elderly women whom he disliked he Is said to have driven out of tbe town by sending all tbe undertakers in Plymouth to measure them for tbeir coffins. His marriage, too, was out of the ordinary. It happened while be was at Oxford. His father told him that be could not afford to keep him there auy longer. Hawker at once set ont to the home of his godmother. Miss Charlotte l'Ans. twenty-one years his senior and the possessor of an annuity of $1,000 He is said to have "run from Stratton te Bade, arriving hot and blown," and proposed to her. She accepted him. Be returned to Oxford a married man and won a fellowship, Tbe marriage waa a happy one. When his wife died Hawker wore at her funeral a pink bat without a brim Bat this was In no disrespect to ber memory. - It so happened that it was bis usual headgear at that time.

As usual when there is a burglar scare, common to this season of the year, tbe police department comes in for considerable criticism, and, as usual, most of, it is uncalled for. Common report credits nearly a score of burglarous depredations in various sections of the city within the past few weeks, but an investigation of factB shows that the genuine cases of house breaking can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and three arrests have been made and confessions obtained. Surely this is a creditable record for the police. Policing a city, especially at night, is not an easy task to perform, and the house breaker is the most elusive criminal in the world the bane of a policeman's existence. In the residential districts, where the police officers have large beats, a burglar, providing he can work noiselessly enough not to alarm the household, can pilfer to his heart's content and make his "get away," in nine cases out of ten, without fear of detection. About the only chance a patrolman has to captuew a burglar red-handed in his thievery is to be guided by chance right to where the burglary is being committed, and this infrequently happens because the clever house-breaker seldom works unless he knowB the officer on the beat is far distant from the scene of the crime. Once a burglary has been committed and the thief escapes it is almost a hopeless task to trace him down. Still if the police fail to show the combined qualities of mind-reader and bloodhound and apprehend the offender they come in for vigorous "roasts." The Palladium again repeats that its one serious criticism of the Richmond police department is the neglect of the police board to create a night reserve force, of not more than two officers, equipped with motorcycles and Btationed at the city building. Telephone alarms from residences of citizens or from night watchmen in stores and factories 'could be answered promptly by these officers and without doubt, burglarous depredations could be reduced to a minimum and, frequently, arrests of offenders made before they had an opportunity to escape. The property saved to householders by the creation of a reserve force, we believe, would more than pay for the additional expense entailed by enlarging the police force.

Solved Mystery of High Price of Eggs Perhaps the family grocer doesnot deserve our denunciation as a "highway robber" or just an ordinary "yeggman" when he extracts forty cents from our gaunt purses for a dozen eggs. It seems that there were poor hatches last spring and then some predatory and undesirable people got a corner on the feed market, boosting the price to such a figure that the poultry raisers bid fond farewell to their pullets and shipped them oft to execution. Of course the supply of hens is short now, just when we like to eat eggs the best, and to buy enough hen product to make a satisfactory breakfast one has to mortgage the home and swear off smoking for six months. In the current issue of Farm and Fireside an authority on eggs writes : "When the poor hatches came off last spring, many poulterers decided to give up raising any great amount of stock this season and buy pullets later. This idea was so general among both fancy and utility breeders that the outcome seems to be general shortage of stock all over the country. To make the matter more serious, feed prices began rising early in the summer, and farmers and poulterers in general from all sections of the country began selling all surplus old stock. Thousands .of car-lots were shipped to our cities, and still the prices kept up higher than usual for poultry of all grades. "As a result from this exodus of poultry the supply is much lower than usual this fall, and the outlook now is favorable for higher prices than last year for both poultry and eggs. Few of our larger egg and poultry centers are now receiving more than enough for daily consumption, and our exports- this year will be smaller than last without doubt. New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Pittsburg and other leading poultry and egg markets have had considerable trouble in securing enough of the best grades to supply their demand, even though larger prices than usual have been paid for over three weeks now. Eastern cities have been buying western eggs at the highest prices known for this time of the year to help out. The second week of September New York City was buying western eggs at 28 cents and 29 cents per dozen, case count. This Is as high as State and near-by eggs usually bring in New York, and the market for fresh hennery eggs went from 28 cents to 36 cents in less than ten days.M

EARL MOUNT CASH ELL. Earl Mount Cashell, who is one of only about three dozen members of the House of Lords, who have passed the allotted span of three-score-and-ten by a decade or more, was born Nov. 27, 1829. His father was the Rev. E. G. Moore, Canon of Windsor, and in his youth the Eon had seemingly small prospects of succeeding to the high title he now bears. After graduating from Cambridge in 1854 he was called to the bar and for many years thereafter was engaged in the practice of law. About fifteen years ago the death of a distant cousin resulted in his succession to the peerage under the title of Earl Mount Cashell, which was created in 1781. Congratulations to: Alvey Augustus Adee, who has held the post of Second Assistant Secretary of State of the United States for a quarter of a century, 70 years old today. Edwin C. Burleigh, former congressman, whom the Republicans of Maine have selected to succeed Obadiah Gardner in the United States senate, 69 years old today.
