TOWNSMEN WILL gEWARDOPERATOR Plan to Remember Heroic Work of Miss Erma Veal, Telephone Operator. (Palladium Special) ECONOMY, Ind., Nov. 26. In all probability the people of this town will present to Miss Erma Veal some kind of a medal or testimonial of appreciation of her services on the morning of the fire here. Miss Veal is a night telephone operator and was on duty when the fire was discovered in the Clark buildings, which were located Immediately across the street from the telephone office. When she saw tongues of flames darting from the building she called the townspeople by phone warning them of the fire and asking them to come to the fire and assist in extinguishing it. Albeit the walls of the little telephone office were scorched by the fierce flames Miss Veal remained at her post and answered calls from larmers nearby. "Yes there is a fire," she would answer. "The Wilson's store is burning. Will you come and help?" Through her untiring efforts the fire was kept from spreading to the general store operated by Frank Greenstreet; to the Wayne National bank on the north and to the building in which the telephone office is located. When she did leave the switchboard she was physically exhausted.

Why French Women Always Look Young

The boy's appetite is often a source of amazement. If you would have such an appetite take Chamberlain's Tablets. They not only create a healthy appetite, but strengthen the stomach and enable it to do its work naturally. For sale by all dealers. Advertisement.

("Aurilla" in Society World.) In France mothers and daughters look like sisters. I tried to find out how the women were able to retain their youthful looks until long past middle age. I learned that they were much given to the use of mercolized wax. This wax possesses a remarkable absorbent property which quickly removes the fine particles of cuticle which are constantly dying and which are the immediate cause of a,n oldlooking complexion. Thus the livelier, healthier, younger skin beneath is given a chance to breathe and show itBelf. I've tried this treatment myself. In less than two weeks my complexion has become as clear, soft and beautiful as a young girl's. Just one ounce of mercolized wax (all American druggists have it) did the work. The wax is put on nights like cold cream and washed off mornings. Another valuable secret I learned from the French was how to quickly remove wrinkles. One ounce of powdered saxolite dissolved in a half pint witch hazel makes a marvelously effective astringent lotion. The face should be bathed in this daily until the deepest lines have entirely disappeared. (Advertisement) Verbal Chiropody. The pastor, who was calling upoa. a member of his congregation, asked tie name of the sprightly little daughter whose winning ways had attracted iis attention. "We call her Elia," said the little firl's mother. "That is a good name. Mrs. Donley." temarked the minister. "It has been made classic by Cb: ""s Lamb." "Well, to tell the tnstb." explained Mrs. Donley, "her name is Cornelia, but it's easier to call nor Eii.' "I see," he rejoined. -'And she probably likes it better. It is a painieKS extraction of a Corn."

Public Sales in the Country are Gala Events and Big Holidays for Fatmers

"Public Sales" they are Invariably headed these auction bills of the rural districts. And public sale day is usually synonymous with a public holiday for a goodly portion of any given township, all other things being equal. Printed in the heaviest, boldest and blackest type, the sale bill carries its hidden modicum of burning heart interest of "hope eternal in the human breast" or melancholy, sadness and ill fortune. Each and every one tells a different story.

The husband and father has died, and the widow is compelled to quit the farm; or the mortgage has weighed down with crushing force, driving the man in debt to retreive his wasted fortunes by sacrificing here to make a new start elsewhere; or heirs, unable to agree on the division of the farm or stock, have taken this means of turning property into cash. Occasionally a prosperous farmer, anxious to move to town, quits the old home place and turns everything into cash or notes.

Then again, a less prosperous neighbor, fired by tales of easily won wealth in other states, has his sale and moves to the new farm, for better or for worse. Quick Method. Whatever the motive, the sale offers the most quick and satisfactory method of disposing of personal property. So long as there are farms and farmers, just that long will there be sales. The most conspicious figure at the typical country sale is the auctioneer.

He Is bright, quick, energetic, with a host of more or less personal references, stories and quips that keep his audience on edge. Up and down the umpiring line, with his falcon eye seeking out a possible bidder, and his nimble tongue putting the bid itself into the mouth of an

I uncertain purchaser, he charges from

early morning until late in the afternoon. His jests are personal and his jokes are broad as the side of a barn, but each and every one brings its applause from the admiring audience. Urging this bidder, taunting that and playing all the emotions of the human breast, he wrings, dollar by dollar and cent by cent, bids from even the most remote prospects in the lot. According to customs dating from time immemorial, household goods go first, then minor tools and implements then the agricultural implements and finally the hogs, cattle and horses. Want to Buy Cheap. If the auctioneer can set two bid-

ders at loggerheads, prices soar and the ultimate victor pays more or less dearly for his success. If the bidders refuse to inject the personal issue into their bidding, he hammers away at their pride, vanity, desire for gain or any other human emotion suited to his purpose, until he has wrested the highest possible bid from their unwilling lips. His clerk is always at his elbow, jotting down the names of purchasers, the amount paid or to be paid, and whether the transaction is to be for cash or by note. "Haying" Months. Late fall and early spring are hie "haying months."" October, November, February and March are the favorite sale months. Every good auctioneer has a sale listed for practically every day of the week during these months. In his off months he sells real estate, runs a hay baler, wood cutter,

But these are only temporary occu
