EDUCATION WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM
Publicity Also a Factor in Solving the Great Riddle of the Railroads. Education and publicity from every point of view were today declared by James O. Fagan to be the keys to the "riddle of the railroads." Mr. Fagan is the Boston and Maine towerman who startled the country recently with his remarkable "Confessions of a Railway Signalman." "On American railroads," said Mr. Fagan, "the superintendent represents end is responsible for the service. In a general way the service means equipment, the movement, handling and supervision of equipment, and the direction of employes connected with it. In the United States today, legislation, organized labor, the press to quite an extent, and a certain section of public opinion are engaged consciously or unconsciously in a sort of conspiracy to destroy the influence and power of the superintendent, to minimize the personal responsibility of the employe and as a consequence to undermine the confidence of the investing public upon whose financial co-operation the railroads are dependent for betterments and expansion. "Confronted with these adverse conditions, what is today the prospect for the service in general? "Now this is a new view of the matter from the standpoint of the traveling public, who are interested in good service, and safety on railroads. Personally, I know absolutely nithing about vested interests or watered stock. I will say, however, that if the press were half as interested in educating the people of the facts in the industrial situation as it appears to be absorbed in ferreting out financial scandals, we would soon have a different story to tell about accidents on American railroads. But for political and sensational reasons the people have been kept in the dark in regard to these fundamentals. Education and publicity from every point of view are the keys to the 'Riddle of the Railroads'." CROSS OR FEVERISH HALF-SICK CHILDREN
Mean their bowels are waste- ' clogged; liver sluggish and stomach sour. Your child isn't naturally cross, irritable and peevish, Mother! Examine the tongue; i" coated, it means the little one's stomach is disordered, liver Inactive and its thirty feet of bowels clogged with foul, decaying waste. Every mother realizes after giving delicious "Syrup of Figs" that this is the ideal laxative and physic for children. Nothing else regulates the little one's tender stomach, liver and bowels so effectually, besides they dearly love its delightful fig taste. For constipated bowels, sluggish liver, biliousness, or sour, disordered stomach, feverishness, diarrhoea. Sore Throat, bad breath or to break a cold, give one-half to a teaspoonful of "Syrup of Figs," and in a few hours all the clogged up waste, sour bile, undigested food and constipated matter will gently move on and out of the system without griping or nausea, and you will surely have a well, happy and smiling child again shortly. With Syrup of Figs you are not drugging your children, being composed entirely of luscious figs, senna and aroma tics it cannot be harmful. Full directions for children of all ages and for grown-ups plainly printed on the package. Ask your druggist for the full name, "Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna," prepared by the California Fig Syrup Co. This is the delicious tasting, genuine old reliable. Refuse anything else offered. THEATRICAL CALENDAR. Gennett Theater. Nov. 23 "The Spring Maid." Nov. 25 "Ready Money." At The Murray. Vaudeville, Matinee and Night. Coliseum. Nov. 18-24 Lyceum Festival. Dec. 4 Charity Ball. Christie MacDonald Herself. Manager McFarland of the "Spring Maid" company has wired the Gennett management that Christie Macdonald will positively appear at the matinee That no understudy will play the role for her. But that she will appear at both matinee and evening performances. The Murray. One of the best bills for several weeks opened a three days engagement at the Murray yesterday afternoon and the large audience that was on hand both afternoon and night were not backward in showing their appreciation. Bailey and McCrea presented a singing and dancing act with a new concep tion of that style of art which is refreshing. The Nagfy's offer a fire eating and magic act that is the best of its kind that we have had this season and the audience put the stamp of approval on their work. Harry Linwood & Co. in their comedy sketch "His Only. Way" proved to be one of those little skits carefully rehearsed for the purpose of pleasing all classes and they are a success. The Star Trio are entertainers artistique. We have had trio's and trio's but never before has a trio of this nature received the greeting and applause that these three did yesterday. While the boys feature their comedy to a degree it is very plain that all posess a musical education and the entire act is surrounded with an artistic atmosphere that is delightful. The Juggling LaBells close the bill with a new and novel juggling act, with ideas characteristic of originality and a desire to be ahead of all others, and their act is a fitting closing for a bill that will no doubt draw extra large attendance. The Gennett. Miss Christie Macdonlad, the brilliant little star of the Viennese operetta "The Spring Maid" has a new humanitarian project which she means to put in force very shortly. It is nothing more or less than a winter refuge for pets of stage people. For years Miss Macdonald, who is a great lover of animals and an enthusiastic member of the New York BideI a-Wee Society, has noted with posi tive grief the neglect and suffering that pets of her professional brothers and sisters are subjected to, during their turns on the road. In almost every case, the poor little creatures are left with disinterested servants or careless hotel or boarding house people. Accustomed to every care while their owners are with them, these little animals suffer untold misery during their absence. For a nominal sum they will be housed comfortably in heated wards, care being taken to separate the various species. They will be under constant surveillance Not a single thing that will increase j their comfort and happiness will be overlooked, and, aside from their grief at the enforced separation from their masters and mistresses, the little animals will be just as well off as they are when at home. "Ready Money." "The high cost of living got a terrible jolt at the Maxine Elliott Theater last night, when the playhouse opened for the season with a play in which a man went though the last 15 minutes of New Year's Eve, the next day, and then along up to Jan. 2nd with a 25 cent piece in his pocket, lived through 36 hours of strenuous check collecting, cleared up $60,000, payments for stocks in a mine he did not own, and then gave his best girl the 25 cent piece to keep as a mascot. "And in this apparently frittering outline lies one of the best financial j plays that New York has ever seen. J Where H. H. Frazee dug up Mr. James Montgomery is no matter; where Mr. Montgomery secured his idea for a financial play is broadcast, but the point is, that between the combination of producer and author fuel for a great production has been found with the result that "Ready Money" will be one of the big successes of the season. WTTH OUTSIDE SLIDING DOORS This is our outside Eliding door etorm buggy which' has the freaks and faults of ether outside sliding door storm buggies eliminated. It is not an experiment or uncertainty, but the result of our efforts to reach tbe ideal in the construction of an outEide sliding door. The greatest fault heretofore with outside sliding door storm buggies has Seen the operation (or rather non-operation) of the doors. Most of then; are made with the doors to slide on tracks that are on the outside of the top, exposed to the weather. The tracks being made of iron and not protected, become . rusty and form a catch-all for mud, sand and water, which frecis and prevents the doors working freely. We have overcome all these objections common to other outside Eliding door storm buggies by our teethed of construction- The upper track is protected from tbe elements of the weather by the side quarters, which extend over it, and tbe lower track is on the underneath edge of the frame. Thus tw doors always slide perfectly smooth and easy. SOLD ONLY BY US
