TEE GREATEST DISCOVERY. Can you name, offhand, the seven wonders of the ancient world that you knew so well as a schoolboy? Try It There were the Egyptian pyramids, toe Coloiwus of Rhodes, the hanging gardens of Babylon, the temple of Diana at Epbesus. and Well, what's the odds? Those seven wonders were the work of slaves done under the lash, and millions mourned and died to make them possible. When It comes to an enumeration of the woaders of the modern world that's different The modern world has not only seven, but seventy times seven, wonders, all of which put to shame the curios of the ancients. Recently a scientific magazine asked 1,000 eminent scholars and scientists of the whole world to select the seven modern wonders. This was the result: Among the 700 answers wireless 'telegraphy come first with 244 votes; next the telephone, with ISO votes: then radium, 105; antiseptics and antitoxin, 140: spectpum analysis, 126: the X ray, 111; the Panama canal, 100. Wonders Indeed, but there are others. . There's the electric light. Realize the worth of that discovery which has reduced crime, insured safety, banished ghosts, promoted order and social uplift Then note this fact: The wonders of the modern world have not wrought suffering, but have relieved pain nnd advanced the weli being of the race. The uutitoxin which saves one child from death by diphtheria Is worth more thau the pyramids. And the greatest of these? It Is not mimed at all. It is not of Invention, great as that is. The greatest wonder of the modern world Is a moral discovery. And that is The dawning consciousness of th brotherhood of man! This age. which has builded asylums and homes and refuges. :md founded countless societies for practical charity this nge. In the tendency of its thought and feeling. They Have Grasped an Opportunity. The large attendance at the opening session of the night school, surprising even the most optimistic expectations of the city school board and the high school faculty, calls attention to the large number of young men and women who were unable to take a high school course, and yet are anxious to extend their education. A survey of the enrollment shows that many shop boys who are making their own livelihood, are keenly awake to the opportunity of securing at least a modicum of technical training. A number of young men, who are rated expert and skilled machinists, having learned their trades as apprentices in the Bhops, app-eciate their lack of algebra and geometry in the mechanical trade, and have entered the night school to overcome this handicap. The result of the enterprise of these young men will be seen in more efficient work in the factories and in a betterment of the incomes of the young men. They are to be congratulated on their enterprise in taking advantage of an opportunity. Adverse circumstances, in many instances, forced them to bend over the lathe and drill press before they had completed their schooling, but evidently it did not dwarf their initiative nor blind' them to the necessity of acquiring mental training as an essential factor in their development. Such young men, who after a day of hard labor willingly attend a night school, are a credit to the community and worthy of all the training the city school authorities can give them. Their presence alone is ample guarantee that the expense of the night school will bring results that will redound to the welfare of the city. It is a gratifying manifestation also that many young men and women have enrolled in the English courses. Ability to speak and write the native tongue is an acquisition not to be despised or underrated. The young women are not behind the young men in showing interest in the night 6chool. The enrollment in the domestic science course is so heavy that extra classes on nights other than the regular ones will be formed. This would seem to indicate that the social function has not usurped the spirit of work among the young women of the city. It must be remembered in this connection that many of these young women are employed during the day in the stores and factories, and their preference for branches that teach cooking and baking is a credit to their common sense and good judgment. It Is a contradiction to the observation of Chief Holmes of the agricultural department in which he holds that women do not do housework as their mothers and grandmothers did. Chief Holmes, in a recent report, says: "Throughout large areas the pride of the housewife in great stores of preserves, dried and pickled fruits, berries and vegetables, exists chiefly in history, and dependence is placed mostly upon the local store for the products of the cannery and evaporator." That any young woman whose work keeps her from learning cooking and baking should turn to the night school to learn these accomplishments, indicates that the criticism of Chief Holmes does not apply in every instance.

Recovered From ! Severe Lung Trouble! While we all know that plenty of fresh air and good food are necessary j to persons suffering from lung trou- ' ble, something more is needed to bring i about full health. Eckman's Altera-; tive is a medicine for throat and lung troubles, and so many reports have been received showing that it brought about good results in a number of cases which were declared hopeless, ; that all sufferers who are not benefitting otherwise should at least investi- i gate what it has done for others. If i may be the means of restoring you to health. Investigate this case: i Madison Lake, Minn. ; "Gentlemen: In December, 1908,; and March, 1909, I was taken with '
hemorrhages of the lungs which con- j fined me several weeks, each time to my bed. These left me very weak and I coughed at nights and could not sleep. My appetite also failed me. My. Doctor advised me to go West. So, in September, 1909, I planned to go, but I had four more hemorrhages, which put me in bed for three weeks. "In November I started for Denver, Colo. After my arrival I met Michael Brody, who, upon learning of my condition, urged me to take Eckman's Alterative. In about two months I began to feel better. I kept on taking the medicine and improved fast. In ! March, 1910, I returned home. I think I am entirely well, have a good appetite and sleep well. When I left Denver my weight was 130 pounds. I now weigh 165, my normal weight. I thank God and your Alterative for my health. If I can help any other person suffering from Tuberculosis, I will gladly do SO. (Sworn Affidavit) I PAUL L.
