Burglar Season On.
The open season for burglars and rabbits is now on in full blast. The hunter seeks his game this day and age in automobiles, but the Richmond policeman still has to go after the house-breaker afoot, owing to the niggardly and shortsighted policy of the city government In refusing to reorganize the police department along modern lines. Two motorcycle policemen would be sufficient to properly protect householders from the depredations of night prowlers, but council says that it cannot afford to buy the motorcycles, so when a citizen detects a thief In the act of breaking In his house and telephones to police headquarters for assistance he must continue to wait anywhere from a half hour to an hour before an unmounted officer arrives, and by that time the burglar has either fled or robbed the house and made his escape, unless, of course, the citizen has been foolish enough to give battle to the intruder, an action which generally results disastrously to the bold but unwise home defender. There have been three burglaries to date but not an arrest made. However, this is no fault of the police department.
No Alliance Desired.

county fired up their steam roller and beaded it for the court house, and manned It with the commissioners -with, instructions to run it over every Bull Moose that wanted on the election board, but they failed to run it over a single Moose. On November 6, they ran into a herd of Bull Moosers that upset the roller, killed the commissioners, politically, and wrecked the Republican party, so the Moose will take charge of the county and throw the roller in the junk. A Mooser that was in the herd. Economy, Indiana.
In the face of the overwhelming defeat of both the regular Republican ticket and the bull moose ticket, it is said the local bull moose organization is willing to compromise and "get together" with their old political associates on one condition only and that is that the Republicans renounce all allegiance to their old party leaders, abandon the Republican party and name and go over bodily to the bull moose party. One thing is demonstrated from the result of the election Tuesday and that is neither the Republican party nor the bull moose party can ever hope to succeed in Bartholomew county or in Indiana or in the nation under the present conditions of estrangement. If anybody other than a Democrat hereafter is elected to office, if any principles other than those of the Democracy are applied in the conduct of the government, local, state and national, the opponents of Democracy must get together, but the basis upon which Republicans can get together again, as laid down by the local bull moosers smacks somewhat of intolerance. There ought to be a middle ground whereon both can stand and "battle for the Lord," without going all the way down to Armageddon. Columbus, Ind. Republican.

It is plain to be seen that the editor of the Republican has not yet fully comprehended that the Progressive party is separate and distinct from the Republican party, if such an organization as the latter is still in existence. The Progressive party seeks no alliance with the Republican party any more than it seeks to unite with the Democratic party. The Republican party stands for the old order of things, government by bosses and legislation for special interests. The Progressive party stands for a new order of things. It was organized because of a general discontent with the policies of both the Republican and Democratic parties. Consequently there Is no middle ground where the Republican and Progressive parties can meet and join hands. Each of the two parties must go its way alone. We believe the path the Progressive party travels leads to a glorious success. We believe the Republican party is following in the footsetps of its predecessor, the Whig party. In other words it is enroute to oblivion, and undoubtedly near its journey's end.

THE ELECTION. The battle just fought, terminating with a dual victory is one that calls for more than a passing thought in forming a correct analysis of the "cause and effect." I use the terms, "dual victory," with no reservation. The victory in more ways than one, is a Progressive triumph. The Democratic party. County, State and National, will do well to make note of that fact. The Washington Times voices the admonition in better language than I can command, when it says: "The
dominant note of the campaign that has ended in his (Wilson's) election, was the note that the Progressive movement sounded. The magnificent testimony that was paid to Theodore i Roosevelt, in the form of a vote which left the Republican party in third place is as much a mandate to President Wilson, and his triumphant party are likely to succeed in just about the measure that they recognize this truth." To have driven out a party of toryism and substituted a party of progress, is the victory the people have won. The victory of Wilson, reiterates the universally recognized traits of the American people; tolerant to a given point; cyclonic in its protest when
that point is passed. Let the good work proceed. What are the causes that led up to this turbulent situation? Why was it not possible to form a coalition of interest and fight the common foe? What are the differences between the Democratic and Progressive principles? Who can explain why he was a Progressive instead of a Democrat, a Democrat instead of Progressive? What reason can be given, unless it be the same as Mary Smith, who in marrying John Jones insists that her new name be Mary Smith Jones. It is true there is one vital point upon which the two parties differ, that is the tariff. That question, no doubt, vitally affected, and will affect the possible coalition of the two parties. Why? The Progressives believe in a tariff for Protection, the Democrats a tariff for Revenue. I am frank to confess, the stumbling block to me is, how, as Progressives, a tariff for Protection can be reconciled with the ninety and nine real reform planks of the Progressive platform. Would a Protective tariff "pass prosperity around?" Look at the question from this standpoint: In less than 12 years the capitalization of trust concerns have increased from three billion dollars, to thirteen and one-half billion dollars ($13,500,000,000) and 73 per cent of this stupendous amount, is watered stock. In other words $7,665,000,000 of supposed capital is an inflated com
mercial bubble. Now the question I want to ask is, is the purposes of a tariff to equal the differences in the cost of production at home and abroad, in any sense different from the tariff necessary to pay dividends and profits on the vast sum of watered stock? How much is added to the cost of living by virtue of the tariff as applied to this $7,665,000,000 of watered stock? I am conservative in placing the increased profits to 20 per cent yet 20 per cent will take from the people an-
tions is estimated, we tremble to think of the results should their displeasure be aroused. If those of the present generation care to follow the back tracks of this enormous growth of commercial power they will be surprised to learn that its insipiency, its beginning, was incubated simultaneous with the advent of Marcus A. Hanna, who declared in the hearing of the writer, "there was no danger of trust building." You and I believe it. Now we are confronted

Woman's Beauty is Based on Health
Rich and Poor
Blackbiirn's
Esteem, a pleasurable physic.
To have health, bowel movement ts absolutely necessary How best to obtain it. If woman's beauty depended npon cosmetics every woman would be a picture of loveliness. But beauty lies deeper than that . It lies in health. In the majority of cases the basis of health, and the cause of sickness, can be traced to the action of the bowels. The headaches, the lassitude, the sallow skin and the lusterless eyes are usually due to constipation. So many things that women do habitually conduce to this trouble. They do not eat carefully, they eat indigestible foods because the foods are served daintily and they do not exercise enough. But whatever the particular cause may be it is Important that the condition Bhould be corrected. An ideal remedy for women, and one especially suited to their delicate requirements, is Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, which thousands of women endorse highly, among them Mrs. Amelia Bishop, Lawrenceburg. Ind., and Mrs. William J. Bell, 867 33d St., Milwaukee, Wis., who have it constantly in the house to meet such emergencies. All the family can use Syrup Pepsin, for thousands of mothers give it to babies and children. It is also admirably suited to the requirements of elderly people, in fact to all who by reason of age or infirmity cannot stand harsh salts, cathartics, pills or purgatives. These should always be avoided for at best their effect is only for that day, while a genuine remedy like Syrup Pepsin acts mildly but permanentIt can be conveniently obtained at
