The humble earthworm is one of man's best friends. The farmer and the gardener could not spare him. Dr. J. Newton Friend tells about him in Science Progress. From Dr. Friend's observations It appears that worms aerate the soil in a variety of ways. In burrowing through the soil the worms render it more porous and permeable to gases, not merely by virtue of tha air spaces formed,-but by reason of the fact that the soil is thus continually kept In gentle motion. Again, the soil passing through the bodies of worms is excreted In a finer condition, being ground by attrition through the intestines. Darwin estimated that no fewer than fifteen ions of soil annually pass through the bodies of worms for every acre. Further, worms breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, and the latter gas, as is well known, readily dissolves in" water, forming an acid solution which will render alkaline earths and metallic oxides iron soluble. Worms materially aid in producing soluble Baits of iron in the soil when other agencies e. g., dilute mineral acids fall. The Iron is eventually given back to the soil in a more soluble condition and presumably in one which can be directly absorbed by plant roots. An Ivory Mat. Many people have never even heard of such a thing, and it is not to be wondered at, for these mats are exceedingly, rare, and it is- said by those who know; tuaf ronlyt three of tbejse byjuUfuJ curiosities exist in tbewho'-e v. oi-id. .Abe brie trepow write about is the largest t'm made." Coaling the sun is an expression uslh! by physicists to indicate the necessity pf renewing the stock oj! motive power, exactly analogous to coaling a vessel for an ocean Journey. Many maintain that this Is done by the incessant showers of meteorites which rain in upon it from celestial space. Thus it is that the sun's energy is continually kept up and Its fires are fed. Atom after atom in the continuous collisions of matter is changed into vapor and adds its quota of energy to the great central storehouse in fact, "coals the sun." Exchange. " . 11 No All. V ! . WHAT IS D1RT7 - ' How the Question Waa Arts wared by a Professor of Chemietry. An old college professor used to say to his students: "What is dirt? Don't be afraid of a little dirt, young gentleman. What is dirt? Why, nothing at ail offensive when chemically viewed. Rub a little alkali upon that dirty grease spot on your coat, and it undergoes a chemical change and becomes soap. Now rub It witb a little water, and It disappears. It is neither grease, soap, water nor dirt. "That ia not a very odorous pile of dirt you observe there. Well scatter a little gypsum over it, and it ia no longer dirty. Everything you call dirt is worthy of your notice as students of chemistry. Analyze it. analyse It! It will all separate into very clear elements. "Dirt makes corn, corn makes bread and meat, and that makes a very aweet young lady that I saw one of you kissing last night 80, after all. you were kissing dirt, particularly If she whitened her skin with chalk or fuller's earth. "There is no telling, young gentlemen, what ia dirt, though I may say that rubbing such stuff upon the beautiful skin of a young lady is a dirty practice. Nice, pearly face powder is made of bismuth nothing but dirt" Exchange. MIXED WIVES. The Dilemma That Mr. Church Faced and How He Mastered It. In the early part of the last century there lived in an old New England town a Mr. Church, who in the course of his early life was bereft of four wives, all of whom were burled in the same lot. In his old age it became necessary to remove the remains to a new cemetery. This he undertook himself, but in the process the bones became hopelessly mixed. His "New England conscience" would not allow him under the painful circumstances to use the original beadstones, so he procured new ones, one of which bore the following inscription. "Here lieB Hannah Church and probably a portion of Emily." Another: "Sacred to the memory of Emily Church, who seems to be mixed with Matilda." Then followed these lines: Stranger, pause and drop a tear. For Emily Church lies burled here. Mixed In some perplexing manner With Alary. Matilda and probably Hannah. Exchange.
A Bit of English Humor. An English humorist many years ago hit upon a neat way of scoring against certain politicians of the times. A comic journal, not being a newspaper within the meaning of the act, was prohibited from giving news, and so in place of a parliamentary report the humorist in question reported a few "first lines" from speeches by prominent members: "Sir Charles Wetherell said he was not sensible" 'Mr. Hunt was entirely ignorant" "lird Ashley said he should take the earliest opportunity of moving" "Mr. Perceval presented a petition praying" "Colonel Sibthorpe never could understand" "Lord Lyndhurst said he must entreat of every one to give him credit" "Sir Edward Sugden was not one of those, who thought" "Mr. Croker said he had the fullest assurance" 61 Years Jewelry November I

SENDS TELEGRAM TO COL. ROOSEVELT
To Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, Oyster Bay, Long Island, N. Y. They used to say, "As goes Wayne county so goes Indiana; and as In diana goes so goes the nation." Something, however, happened to nullify our ordinarily nation-wide influence this time for every candidate on the Pro gressive tickets, nation, state and county, received a plurality of the votes cast yesterday In Wayne county. Our defeat In the nation and in states Is in reality a great and lasting victory, for in obtaining second place for the Progressive party onehalf of the bi-partisan machine government has been wiped out. We now occupy the strategic position that will make us second to none In 1916. The great principles of our party assure us this ultimate victory for humanity's cause. Please accept my sincere congratulations upon these great results obtained under your splendid leadership. Rudolph G. Leeds. A Pussling Trick. Take a piece of writing paper about three Inches square and with a lead pencil, the point of which has been dipped in water, draw a circle, a square, a triangle or any other geometrical figure. Put the paper carefully on a pan of water, letting it float and leaving tha surface dry. Carefully drop water on the surface of the paper until the space within the figure is filled. The moistened pencil lines will keep it from flowing outside '.be figure. Now place the point of a pin over some point in the figure near the edge. The pin point must penetrate the surface of the water, but must not touch the paper. At once the paper will float around until the pin points directly to the center of the figure. See If you can find ont why It does this. Rate and Water. Government experiments show that rats can live an IndeSrJte time without water. Three of tb animals were put on a diet consisting of bread, meat and cheese, but no watr, and all were alive and well sixty days after the experiment was begun. On the fifteenth day one was given an opportunity to drink, but made no attempt to do so. When kept without food, but with water, one rat lived three days, and of six rats deprived of both food and water all died within periods ranging from two to five days. Chicago News. Hope and Joy. BAZAARS OF CAIRO.
The Curious Tiny Shops and the Narrow, Swarming Streets. The bazaars of Cairo are very interesting. The streets are exceedingly narrow, and the stores of the merchants are often no larger than a good sized i cupboard, without doors, but with ' shelves on which the goods are displayed. The merchants squat down on J a little platform in front. You see hers i the workers in gold and silver, weavers ' of silk fabrics and slipper makers, ding their work in the same way it was done hundreds of years ago. The oldest basaar is that of the scentmakers. They have a whole street to themselves, and when you get within a hundred yards or so the only guide you need is your nose. These narrow streets are crowded with a ceaseless throng of natives: women with veiled faces; men. women and children on donkeys: curious Cat carts drawn by donkeys, on which squat women enshrouded in black nothing visible but one eye. and occa sionally along comes a great lumbering camel, quite as large as half a dozen of the native shops. Cabmen drive past with studied indifference to life and limb, and rather than get hurt you crowd yourself into a bunch of natives, at the risk of having yoar pocket pj?ktd or being covered with vermin. Her Property. Now and again things happen oa the football "field which go to add to the gayety of the nation. On one occasion, for instance, during a certain league match in the north, the referee somehow managed to lose his whistle. There was not another whistle to be found, and it seemed that the game would have to come to a sudden snd inglorious end. until the referee hit upon an Ingenious scheme. He produced a Istchkey from his pocket and mansge to tootle merrily enough on it till suddenly, ss he approached the touch line a woman's shrill voice waa beard exclaiming: "Fred, come here at ones. Where did yon get that latchkey?" As he listened to the guffaw which west up from the assembled crowd that referee wss the most sheepish looking man on the ground, and as ha thought of the curtain lecture looming ahead his heart became like lead within his bosom.
