CUBA IS ON EDGE ABOUT ITS ELECTION Feeling Between the Parties Is Intense and Voters Are Anxious for Day.
(National News Association) HAVANA, Nov. 1. All Cuba is awaiting in suspense the outcome of the great political battle to be fought out at the polls today. Never before in the history of the island republic have the issues at stake in a campaign for the presidency been so momentous and never before has the feeling between the opposing parties been eo high. The election today will be the second to be held by Cubans without American supervision. The fist election, that of 1905, when Estrada Palma wes elected president for a second term, was accompanied by disorders, followed by threats of revolution, culminating in the outbreak of August, 1906, directed by Dr. Alfredo Zayas and Gen. Pino Guerra, and precipitat ed the second American intervention.

Menocal will carry the election, though the following of Vice President j Zavas is still strone. The chances of i Gen. Menocal have been considerably j augmented by his recent alliance with, the wing of the Liberal party under the leadership of Gen. Ernesto Asbert. The latter was himself a candidate for the presidency, but withdrew from the contest in favor of Gen. Menocal. Gen. Asbert is vastly popular with the masses, having risen by his own efforts from a very humble position in life to the high post he now occupies as governor of Havana province. Both Conservatives and Liberals are .making strong bids for the large negro votei the former trying to excite the animosity of the negroes against the Climate Failed; Medicine Effective It has been absolutely shown that rest, fresh air, and good food do help many persons suffering from Tuberculosis. But it must be admitted that the disease is seldom more than "arrested." Something more is needed. Eckman's Alterative is a medicine made for the treatment of Tuberculosis. It has conquered this disease again and again. Often these benefits have been effected where the surroundings were not ideal yet recoveries resulted. Now we argue that Eckman's Alterative should be used in every case of Tuberculosis, in addition to good, nourishing food and fresh air, which we all need. A remarkable case follows: Weldon, 111. "Gentlemen: Through Eckman's Alterative I have beer, saved from a premature grave. On December 14, 1904 I was taken with Typhoid Pneumonia. My lungs became very much affected; my sputum was examined and Tuberculosis Bacilli was found. On February 21, 1905, I was advised to go to Fort Worth, Texas. While there an abscess in my right lung broke and discharged. I grew worse, aud became very much emaciated. , My physician informed me that I must go to Colorado as quickly as possible. I left Texas, June 1 and arrived in Canon City, June 3, very feeble. After being there two weeks, my physician informed me that my case was hopeless. Three weeks later I returned home, weighing 103 pounds, the doctor having given me no assurance of reaching there alive. "On June 14, 1905, I began taking Eckman's wonderful remedy for Consumption. Today I weigh 158 pounds. I am stout and well and can do any kind of work about my grain elevator. I have not an ache nor pain in my lungs, eat well, sleep well, and never felt better.' (Sworn affidavit) Arthur Webb. Eckman's Alterative is effective in Bronchitis, Asthma, Hay Fever; Throat and Lung Troubles, and in upbuilding the system. Does not contain poisons, opiates or habit-forming drugs. For sale by leading druggists. Ask for booklet telling of recoveries, and write to Eckman Laboratory, Philadelphia, Pa., for additional evidence. (Advertisement)

Weird Attempte of Passenger to Eecape Horror of Mel de Mer. There are a great many preventives of seasickness, and very weird some of them are. It Is difficult to imagine a person In the throes cf mal de mer calling for petrol to ease his suffering, yet petrol in powder, not as a liquidhas been suggested as an infallible cure. Triturated petrol, the powder In question, Is not so difficult to take as J petrol itself would be, but most people prefer seasickness. Some of the "cures" are very Ingenious. A French physician puts forward the theory that seasickness is due to a lack of pure air and recommends oxygen to relieve the breathing of the sufferer. As, however, the seasick one has to pump thirty to forty pints of pure oxygen into him to get the full benefits of this doctor's cure, this scheme Is not likely to please the average traveler, who wants something cheap and compact. Another gentleman, an Italian ambassador, believes in placing a mirror before his bed and in gazing steadily at his reflection. In his case this strange remedy certainly gives relief, but it Is hardly likely to apply to invalids in general. A well known foreign gentleman has another theory. In his opinion it Is best for the sufferer to shut his eyes and forget the sea and every evil connected with it. Unfortunately an attack of seasickness Is not so easy to forget. One other peculiar cure recently put forward by a doctor advises travelers to eat Tery heartily both before and on their travels. Lack of confidence. In his opinion, is the real cause of seasickness. People Imagine they are going to be sick and get so resigned to their lot that If they are not seasick they are quite disappointed. A Christian scientist has suggested the repetition of a formula such as: "There is no such thing as seasickness. There Is no seasickness. It's only my Imagination. 1 wonder what's for dinner." The writer, having crossed the channel recently, has to disagree very strongly with this "cure." "When seasick drink hot tea and wear red spectacles," advises a continental doctor, who has decided that seasickness Is due to a lack of blood supply to the brain. This "cure" certainly causes the blood to rash to the head, but red spectacles are bad for the eyes, and there are other drawbacks to this wonderful idea. "After a good dose of saline procure a long strip of flannel and wrap it tightly around the stomach," suggests another medical man. Exactly how this is going to prevent seasickness be doesn't explain, but it is certainly a novel idea. Of course there are numerous patent medicines, and these undoubtedly giTe . relief In individual cases, but an absolutely infallible cure that will satisfy everybody has yet to be found. Aerated waters are very good, and champagne usually gives wonderful relief. Sufferers should also diet very carefully before taking a sea trip. Tit-Bits. Dust from the tail of Halley's comet, according to a French astronomer, is responsible for the coronas that have frequently been seen around the moon in perfectly clear weather ever since May, 19, 1911. The angular size of a corona depends upon the size of the solid or liquid particles in the air which diffract the light; the smaller these particles the larger tit corona.

These Italians are excellent singers and have all, at different times, appeared in opera in their native country. Their act has an old Italian setting and the vocalists are costumed effectively. They play on various instruments, including a mandolin, a guitar and a violin, one of the most applauded numbers being the violin 8olo by one of the company. The lat ter includes one woman with a colora-! tura soprano, and the men's voices j show their operatic training. They j were recalled several times after their first appearance and theirs is one of the best singing numbers the house has had recently. The LaNoles on their bounding board give a good acrobatic exhibition while Iva Donetta gives a black face impersonation with the assistance of a clever dog -?.'.hich took with the audience. "A Slight Mistake," is a diverting sketch by Temple and Bennett, while Bert Laurenze gives an excrutiatingly amusing exhibition of farcical dancing. "Bell Hop" Tonight.
