TIDRIUGTOU SPEAKS TO A LARGE CROWD Attacks Republicans and Democrats. Urges Negroes to Vote for Teddy.
Declaring that the Republicans and Democrats had given the colored people of Wayne county nothing but a bunch of unkept promises, that the Republican party had been unfaithful to its traditions, and that Theodore Roosevelt was the only leader who was a friend of the negro, E. G. Tidrington, a prominent negro of Indiana, last evening pleaded with local negroes to vote the Progressive ticket. In former campaigns TIdrington stumped the state for the Republican party, and his conversion to the Progressive cause was considered a signal manifestation of the attitude of the colored people toward the Republican party. Perhaps no colored man in Indiana exerts the influence Tidrington does. He spoke in the council chamber last evening to an enthusiastic crowd of white and black men. He was introduced by Will W. Reller, Progressive nominee for prosecuting attorney. Mr. Reller urged the negroes to vote for the Progressive party saying that it is the only party which will improve the condition of the negro. "Over fifty years ago thousands of negroes were held in bondage in this country. Then it was that Abraham Lincoln and Oliver Morton left the old Whig party and united their efforts to assist the Republican party. That party waged a campaign which eventually gave the colored people their freedom. That party not senible of its trust has degenerated and become corrupt. As

Morton and Lincoln left their party, so Theodore Roosevelt and Hiram Johnson left the Republican party, not to fight for the black men, not to fight for the white man, but to fight for them both and serve them alike for what is good for one man is good for all of us." Tidrington's Address.
Mr. TIdrington said in part: "I am here tonight to speak for a party, . for a political ship which has for its pilot the greatest living American. The Progressive party regardless of race is the salvation of the American people. "The platform of this party is the best one that has ever been drawn up by a political party, and this is the only party which has not been unjust toward the negro. The party is not only a friend of yours but also a friend of the United States. What has j the Republican party done? Of course years ago it did some good for us, but that time is now passed. The Republi can party is now nothing but a crowd I of bosses. I will not say much about the Democratic party to you because it never has done anything and never will do anything for you. Concerted Action. ! "The time has now come for the black and white man to unite and ight for the general uplift of humanity and brotherhood. The reason the colored population don't know how to vote , now is because it had a poor start. I j want you to go from here feeling that ; you will vote like men. The saloon bums and dirty ward politicians have controlled you long enough. You are : naturally progressive and if we ever expect to become a race of national .importance we must avoid the men who come to use before election and .promise us all- kinds of things and pass cigars and whisky around. The salvation of the black and white race is to throw out the bosses or they will .throw us out. ! dent and the greatest friend the black man has ever had. The coming election lies between Roosevelt and Wilson. Taft will not even make a good third. If you vote for him you are wasting your vote. In my honest opinion there would have been a revolution In this country had not the Progressive party Btarted when it did. The poor man would have had his blood sapped from him until he became desperate. "Now why should we not vote for the new Progressive party? Have you publicans and Democrats in this community? As near as I can find out you never got much more than a bunch of unkept promises. See your neighbors and boost. All of you can do it and I want each black man to go from here tonight with the determination that he will get at least one vote and help in the general uplift of humanity for equality, for what is 6auce for the goose is sauce for the gander."
