ROOSEVELT IS TO , LEAVEONTUESDAY And Will Then Take Ten Days' Rest at His Home in Oyster Bay. (National News Association) CHICAGO, Oct. 18. Col. Theodore Roosevelt will leave Tuesday for Oyster Bay. He will then take ten days' rest and will re-enter the campaign for a strenuous, whirlwind finish. These plans were tentatively made today after the surgeons assured Mrs. Roosevelt that while theoretically the colonel would not be out of danger until tonight, he virtually had progressed so far that all danger had passed. Telegrams were today sent to Oyster Bay regarding preparations for receiving the colonel. These telegrams fixed the time of departure tentatively at Tuesday. It is barely possible that the start may be made on Monday. Col. Roosevelt expects to conduct the campaign from Sagamore Hill during the time his enforced activity continues. Mrs. Roosevelt, however, may veto the idea and may insist upon her husbands political work being confined to a few important conferences with the leaders of the party. . The usual big batch of telegrams flowed in today. More than fifty were received soon after daylight and these will be answered or dealt with as he may see fit by Secretary McGrath and Theodore Roosevelt. Jr., after there has been a brief conference with Mr. ' Roosevelt following the medical conference. ' " 1 Mrs. Longworth and Misa Ethel Roosevelt will be permitted to visit the colonel with several Chicago women friends some time during the day if the medical men find nothing in the patient's, condition to warrant apprehension. , The wound in the colonel's chest has healed to such an extent that there is only one chance in a thousand of his having any further trouble with it. So far as any Inconvenience from the wound is concerned the patient might now be walking about as he pleased.

(National News Association) NEW YORK, Oct. 18. A triple defeat was inflicted On the defense In the trial of police lieutenant Becker, charged with the murder of Herman Rosenthal. . Immediately following the opening of the defense former district attorney, W. T. Jerome,. Police Commissioner Rhinelander Waldo and Frank Luban were called by Attorney Mclntyre, chief counsel for the defense, but the court would not allow their testimony to stand. When Mclntyre tried. to. discredit part of Jack Rose's story through testimony of Mr. Jerome the court sustained all the objections of District Attorney Whitman and the former district attorney could not get his atory. Next came Waldo, who testified that he Instructed Beck(er to Taid Rosenthal's gambling place and proceeded to further testify that Becker tried to get relieved of duty as bead of the "strong arm" squad, bat Ms evUUmce was ruled out as immaterial. The third defeat came when then dpttiHSe called Frank Luban, brother of SlpnrfB l.ubanf the criminal who tasti fifed, he bad seen the shooting of Roaentbal, and who identified the igtuunsn In open -court- aa the assassin. llcemen detailed to guard Governor j
Hiram W. Johnson. Progressive vice presidential candidate, marched to the Grand Central station and then marched away again. They found no governor. Instead, Johnson, coming over another line, landed at another station, made his way in a taxicab to the BlackBtone hotel. When Johnson learned that he had eluded the pick of Chicago's police department he laughed heartily, declaring that there was no necessity for a guard. ! After conferring with Col. Roosevelt at the Mercy hospital. Gov. Johnson delivered a message from the , colonel at the meeting which he ad
dressed here this afternoon. The message was as follows: "You who are Democrats are recreant if you do not proceed with your fight. This is not a struggle for a day nor for a year, but for all time, it is not a cause of a fight involving one man or one office, but it is a fight for all the people for all the time. The price of your citizenship shall cause you to leave the confines of your own narrow circle and reach out and aid your fellow men. This is the cause which we are fighting for, and it Is the cause of the people."
