Westguard, field representative of the United States Government Office of Good Roads and I the American Automobile association, j arrived in this city about 4 : 30 o'clock yesterday afternoon and left at 8 i o'clock this morning,-on his third j

trans-continental trip from New York to San Francisco. Mr. Westguard Is probably the best posted man In the country on good roads and the way to make good thoroughfares out of poor roads. Mr. Westguard has made two ocean to ocean journeys this season in an automobile, and is now on his third trip. He left New York City October 2. He went to Indianapolis this morning and will remain there until late tomorrow afternoon as he is to deliver an address before the convention of Indiana Automobile salesmen tomorrow. Wilbur Evans, of the Richmond Auto Inn, accompanied Westguard to Indianapolis. Has Vast Information. Mr. Westguard has a tremendous quantity of good roads information which he will submit to men who are interested in seeing an immediate crystallization of American good roads enthusiasm. The United States Government Office of Good Roads and the Touring Bureau of the A. A. A. realizes the enormous growth of transcontinental touring, and Westguard has acquired every bit of information that one can possibly secure by making two trips from the Atlantic to Pacific and from the Pacific to the Atlantic. He is now on his third trip across the continent and the exact status of the good roads in the country is being placed at the disposal of the good roads office and the American Automobile association. Driving a . large "Pathfinder" car Westguard is recognized as the greatest of modern pathfinders. Newark, N. J.; Philadelphia, Pa.; Wheeling, W. Va.; Columbus, O.; and Dayton, O., were among the cities touched by Westguard before reaching Richmond. It is well known that Westguard made the trip from New York to Seattle over a route never before traveled by an automobile.

When it comes to Phonetic spelling, Samuel Horch has Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and others who have urged the adoption of a less complex system of spelling backed off the map. Horch was recently arrested in Union County, Ohio, on the charge of nonsupport of his child. Edna Horch secured a divorce in the Wayne circuit

court May 11 of this year and Horch was ordered by the court to pay $2 per week toward the support of the child, the custody of which was granted the plaintiff. TURKEY IN A HUFF. BERLIN, Oct. 7. It was reported in diplomatic circles this afternoon that Turkey had determined to send an ultimatum to the Balkan states tonight, demanding demobllzation within 24 hours. Otherwise Turkey was prepared to attack Bulgaria without further notice. The German foreign office is close to the Porte and this report was generally credited.

WILSON SHOWS UP REPUBLICAN TRICK Produces Letter Written by - Hilles which Is Intimidating Voters.

(National News Association PUEBLO, Col.. Oct. 7. Gov. Wilson today made public a letter sent by Chairman Hilles of the Taft campaign committee to employers all over the country. The letter came, to the governor from a manufacturer who resents It, as an effort to intimidate his employes. In this connection Gov. Wilson calls attention to the fact that as governor of New Jersey he recently signed a law making It a misdemeanor for any employer to attempt to intimidate his employes by any political comment In the pay envelope, by posters, letters or otherwise.

CLEMENCY IS GIVEN

(National News Association) INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 7. Governor Marshall today acting on the advise of the state pardon board, granted a pardon to Ralph Drake, who was sentenced to life Imprisonment from Decatur county In 1894. Drake was convicted of killing a woman and later attempted suicide. Parolee were granted to John TJlmer, serving a life sentence from Jackson county, and James Cave, a lifer from Pike county. The application of Dr. Nelson B. Ross, of MuncJe, who kilned an interurban conductor, was turned down.

HAD STREET BATTLE In Texas, Two Officers and a Civilian Killed.

(National News Association) GREENVILLE, Tex., Oct. 7. In a pitched battle in the streets of this town early today in which police officers and citizens took part Policeman Sant Simmons and Emmet Shipp and Roy Harrington, a civilian were shot to death. The officers attempted to arrest a wealthy cattleman on a minor charge and a fight was precipitated.

GREAT SUM MISSING $200,000 from Cuba to New York Disappears.

(National News Association) NEW YORK, Oct. 7 Officials of the National Park bank today confirmed the report that $200,000 consigned to the bank by the National bank of Havana, Cuba, had disapepared. The money was forwarded to the New York bank by its Cuban correspondent. It was sent by registered letter. Private detectives, secret service men and Cuban authorities are working on the case.

Charge Made Against Illinois Young Man.

(National News Association) PETERSBURG, Ind., Oct. 7. Robbers escaped with $2,800 in money and $150 worth of merchandise from the general store of W. L. Barnett and Co., during the night. The yeggmen stole tools from a blacksmith shop with which they forced an entrance to the Barrett store. They scattered about and left behind $1,200 in notes and checks. The men who did the work are supposed to have escaped on an early morning train.

Ray Psanschmidt was arrested today charged with the murder of his parents, his sister Blanche, and Miss Emma Kaempen, who were killed ten days ago in the Psanschmidt farm house near here. Clothing said to have been worn by the young man were found today covered with blood in the vault of an outhouse at a grading camp where he was employed. Young Psanschmidt declares he is innocent.

(National News Association) TOPEKA, Oct. 7. William Pfefer, first and only Populist senator from Kansas and founder of the Populist party, died today at the home of his daughter at Grenola, Kan. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1831.

(National News Association) WASHINGTON, Oct. 7. Eight privates of battery F, Third field, artillery, -were Injured by a premature explosion of a shell at Tobyhanna, Pa. W. E. Erbeck, the most seriously hurt, was brought to the hospital here. The battery was returning from the Connecticut maneuvres and had stopped at Tobyhanna for target practice. A shell exploded before a breachlock gun had been closed. Six of the men were hurt by pieces of flying metal.

COMMISSIONERS MET The Wayne county board of commissioners met today at the commissioners' court -room. Several liquor licenses were granted or transferred from one man to another. This afternoon the board took up the matter of ordering paint for county buildings.

LOCAL PHYSICIAN TO DELIVER ADDRESS Dr. D. W. Stevenson, this city, is one of the speakers who will appear before the surgical section of the Indiana State Medical society at its annual convention In Indianapolis Thursday and Friday of this week. All sessions will be held in the Claypool ho teL A number of local physicians will attend the meeting.

(National News Association) MILWAUKEE, Oct. 7. Ralph De Palma's condition took a slight turn for the better today. Although not out of danger, physicians declared the man had a chance to recover. Caleb Bragg explained his position in the accident today. "Although I knew someone was coming," he said, "I had not tried to pull to one side of the course to let him by, as there would not have been enough room for him to pass at this point had I given all the room I could."

Because pretty Grace Mapleton, age 15, spurned the advances of Joseph Kellerman, aged 32, the lovesick swain shot and dangerously wounded her and then committed suicide with the same weapon in the presence of the girl's mother in Clark Btreet at a late hour last night. Kellerman had called to renew his plea that he girl marry him and upon receiving a repeated refusal, began shooting.
