A Natural EvolutionlK

3

- Senator Joseph M. Dixon accurately states thx glve party Is a natural political evolution, not on the part of v . Jans but on tho part of the people. The senator reasons as followar. ' t. "Men and women now are insisting on full weight packages at the grocery store and the butcher shop, and they want full-weight performance in the state legislatures and the city halls and the National Congress of the country. They are tired of saying: "Well, I don't know who to vote for this year; I guess I'll have to vote the Socialist ticket." "The thinking men and women don't want to vote the Socialist ticket. They want to vote for a ticket that is more American, more sane, less revolutionary. And the Progressive party is going to give them that kind of a ticket. "Time has been when a political meeting of Republicans was attended by Republicans, and the Democrats all stayed away, so that the crowd might not be regarded as a mark of coming success. There was great enthusiasm, for everybody present agreed with the Republican speakers. "At the Democratic meetings there was nobody but Democrats. Again there was much enthusiasm, for no Republican would deign to attend. "That time has gone. People who go to political meetings now go for information. Politically to UBe a current phrase everybody is from Missouri. Arguments are weighed and tested. Furnish them with a sane, tangible program and they will give you their attention. Offer, them a scientific plan of action that will bear close scrutiny and you will get their support. "We know that our program is based on common Bense; we know that it is workable. It has been given every test. We know further that it is in accord with the ideas of the majority of the people because it is composed of the ideas of the majority of the people as they have from time to time been formulated and as they have here and there been put into successful operation."

Over the Mexican border comes a refugee with a tale of horror, then comes another, and another the cavalry patrol riding picket along the sluggish boundry-river sees a red flare on the early morning horizon and he curses angrily but helplessly at the destruction of another American plantation. Then in nondescript vehicles come white faced women and children, guarded by stern horsemen. All cross the border with sighs of relief. "They are killing Americans back there," they growl or sob as the case may be, "and our government won't protect us." "Drive out the Gringo or killit ' is the edict of Mexico. The Insurrecto is carrying it out to the totter.' Tfc Federal is ready to do so but stays his sword awaiting against that day when armed men in olive drab cross the Rio Grande. Then the men of Madero will fraternize with the' men of Orozco and united Latins will fly at the throat of the Saxon invaders. , A Mexican war would be no Sunday school picnic far from it. A great army would be needed to subdue our southern neighbor. Thousands of American lives would be the price. Disease would be a sinster ally of the Mexicans. Grim tragedies would be enacted in wild mountain passes and dense ropical jungles the way to Mexic6 City would be a weary and bloody one, but the fall of that city would not end the conflict. TO A YOUNG GIRL. What sort of girl are you? An impertinent question? But suppose I am old enough to be your father and that 1 want to make you think Just u little and if possible help you a little. I am not a mind reader, but I can tell you offhand what kind of girl you are. because You are fashioned by your Ideals. And what is an ideal? An ideal is a mental picture of what you admire, of what yon seek to imitate, of what you desire to le The picture of it is in your imagination. It is a law of our life that we are changed, transformed, into the likeness of that which we lore or udiulre. So. you see. it matters tremeudously what your ideal may be. Who is ur Ideal? I say "who" because a girl's Ideal la likely to be that of a person. She sees some womua whom wbe utiinlrea. She wunts to be like that ermii. And because of that desire unconsciously she imitates and is changed more or less into the likeness of that person. Who is your ideal, my girl? Is she some good and gracious woman of refined manners and correct speech and gentle ways? Does the lovely woman you most admire bear herself with true womanliness? Does the charm of her personality proceed from the true traits of her character? If so. happy you! Because either you are trying to copy some such ideal woman or have contented yourself to follow some lower Ideal. Maybe your Ideal is that of a well dressed woman who is little more than

a shapely dummy on which to bang ex
