The number of cases of

among Pennsylvania railroad employ- j es was 35.4 per 1,000 employes in 1902, and in 1911 It had dropped to 29.2. Deaths from sickness were 8.5 :

j per 1,000 employes in 1902 and 7:5 in

! 1911. During the intervening years

there was a steady decrease in the ; number of cases per 1,000 employes. Pennsylvania railroad officers point to the above statistics as reflecting the long years of service of its employes. It has more than 2,000 active

employes who have been on the railroad's pay roll more than forty years, and over 1,500 men who served 40 years or more and are now receiving pensions from the company. The records of the railroads show that it has more than 4,000 active em

ployes between the ages of sixty and j seventy years. There are on the pay roll or pension list of the Pennsylvania j

railroad nearly 500 men who have been with the road over fifty years.

Innes Friday. The "genius of Bandmaster Innes, who is to be heard here, for one festival concert on Friday evening, October 4th at the Coliseum, has given to the present day bands instrumental innovations which may be seen alike in the travelling concert bands and in the smaller bands which by their week ly concerts on the public squares of the smaller towns add a note of gaiety to those communities. And these fundamental changes in band construction

jhave, at the same time, given Innes a

The great aballty of Innes is shown in the make-up of his program which may alway8 be "depended upon fat enough of the best music to please the educated musician and ' enough of the other kind to keep the feet tapping of those who , don't know the difference between the Doxology and Dixie. Several notable soloists will be heard during the engagement here, notably the famous Dutch soprano, Mme. Van Loon,- who comes fresh from a series of European successes. Advertisement.

Suggestions That Will Lengthen Life fa Timepieoa. v Here are a few rules about a wateL that are worth while committing tc memory: Wind a watch at nearly the sacu time each day. It is just as bad to wind too often as to let a watch run down. Do not wind your watch too tight This is responsible for many a rlsil to the jeweler. Do not bold the watch by the stem and wind the watch as some women thought icxsly do. Do - not cart y a watch la bag oi purse. If you cannot wear it outside your gown fasten it to your blouse oo the insidtf. Don't bang a watch down on tabl

or bureau. If you will put it on its back see that It has a soft berth. Fat better to hang a watch when not in

use. Fascinating watch stands, with

convenient books, are now sold for this

purpose. They are ornamental and lengthen the life of n watch. Do not subject your watch to intense

beat or freezing. It it injurious,;

The Way It Acts aa a Preservative of Animal Matter. It is sometimes necessary to preserve parts of a human body or of some other animal for the purpose of testing for the presence of poisons. In such cases the preservative must fulfil certain special requirements. It must be able to prevent absolutely any decay or putrefaction; it must not itself cause any, change-In the tissues, either structural or chemical; It must not introduce any substance that would in any way interfere with the subsequent tests or give rise to false conclusions, and it must be easily handled. Liquid atr has been found to be quite well adapted to this use. Its low temperature (about 400 degrees below zero, Fahrenheit) prevents absolutely all putrefaction as well as all other chemical change. At the same time, it prevents the evaporation of any volatile substance that may be present, such as carbon monoxide or

hydrocyanic acid gas. Experiments i

have shown that the most delicate tissues, such as glands and brain, are quite unaffected by being placed in liquid air for a long time, and the tissues even retain their natural colors. For the purpose of making chemical tests In a piece of tissue it is frequently necessary to cut the material np Into very small pieces. Tissues that have been preserved In liquid air are frozen so hard that they may be ground up into a fine powder. Harper's. " ' Titbits of the Ancient Greeks."
