Thomas Jefferson Stone was a typical claim holder, and prospector. He bad no teeth, his hair was gray, his features sallow; and withered, and he looked sixty-three or sixty-four. lie told me, however, that he was only forty-six. . There was a cowed, placid, helpless air about him. and yet In his eyes there was a fire faint and glimmering, the fire of a fading fanaticism. He was still the victim of an obsession. He had been twenty-five years prospecting, picking out claims, hoping to strike it rich some day. I asked him how he lost his teeth. He said by taking medicine good for neuralgia, but too strong for his ivories. I asked him why be didn't have a false set made. He said be had bad a set, but he took them out and put them in his pocket one day. where his handkerchief was "to rest bis mouth." and. happening to take out the handkerchief quickly, he pulled out the set of teeth also, and the plate felk on the floor and broke. I told Thomas Jefferson Stone that 1 wanted his photograph, and three days afterward he was ready for the kodak. When he came I saw he had a set of teeth in his mouth. I was astounded. We were scores of miles from any dentist or any town where a dentist could be. Hello. Stone," I said; "you've got a set of teeth! How's that?' - He gave a smile of conquest "I borrowed 'em to be photographed," he said. Gilbert Parker in Metropolitan. Raining .and Reigning. President Hadley recalls that the day when he succeeded the learned and witty Timothy Dwight as president of Yale university the exercises attendant upon the transfer of authority were marred by a heavy fall of rain. "It came down suddenly," said Dr. Hadley, "just as a column of people which President Dwight and I headed were crossing the campus. Some one banded ns an umbrella which 1 was about to open when my companion took It from me. t ; uci UJC7 vaitj - yivi:otyJi whispered. 'Your reign will begin tomorrow.' "Philadelphia Star. i .. . A Tonic For Her Guests. Mrs. Blanc was giving a tea party on her yacht. The affair, for some reason, was dragging dreadfully. The guests talked of nothing but tbe weather, and even In this talk there would come long., deathly silences. Suddenly Mrs. Blanc, losing her bal ance. fell heavily against ber mother"X BAJ TO DO SOMBTHnfO.' In-law, who sat beside tbe low rail, and with a moaning: cry tbe dear old lady went headforemost overboard. Ot course she was rescued,": but after ward Mr. Blanc took Mrs. Blanc prt vately to task. "How clumsy you were," he said, "to knock mother into the water like that I'm afraid she won't care to visit us again in a hurry. You really should be more careful." "Now, George,' said Mrs. Blanc, "be reasonable. I had to do something 1 simply bad to. Didn't you see how oar party was dragging?" A Matter of Dialect. An elderly Scotsman had been, convicted of drunkenness and sentenced to fourteen days.' The warder handed him a bucket of water in his cell next morning- with the remark. "That's to clean your cell with." . ! What was his astonishment on returning to And Sandy, who bad divested himself of his clothing, having a bath. "-M; ' I "Good gracious." exclaimed the ward ar. THEATRICAL CALENDAR. Murray Theater. Vaudeville Matinee and Night. Gennett Theater. Sept 30. Sousa's band. - ' . Coliseum. October 4. Innes band. Sousa. The appearance of the famous Sou-! ea Band in this city on Monday afternoon and evening, September 30th, is . one of the interesting musical events! of the season in Richmond. the afternoon. Sousa is, perhaps, the most famous bandmaster in the world. For many; United States Marine band he had incomparable opportunities to "make ' good" with the public and did so. j After he resigned this position and started an organization of his own his ', fame became international, his band having appeared in all the great cities ; and countries of the world Innes. Innes, the famed musician and director, who will bring his well known band here for one festival concert on Friday evening Oct. 4, at the Coliseum, has the happy faculty of winning an audience almost before his big aggregation of players have sounded the opening phrase of a concert, for he is blessed with a geniality that will not be denied. Besides being an Elk, a Shriner, a Knight Templar and a 32nd degree Mason, he is an all around good fellow, who is always ready for a practical joke, whether it be on him or the other fellow, which is "going some" for a man usually looked upon as a musician and composer of the very ; higest attainments. He has the rare j ability to make his programs yvyu-; lar" enough to please the non-musical, and classical enough to enthuse the musical student. And he - has a band which ranks with the very best Symphony Orchestras of the country while still retaining the ability to give a new zest to an up-to-date bit of popular melody. His coming engagement is in the najture of a popular farewell prior to the Australian trip which he is to make under the management of the J. D. Williams Syndicate of Sidney, N. S. W. Several notable soloists will be heard, besides the fifty-live players of the band, notably Mme. Van Loon, the celebrated Dutch soprano. The Murray. Vaudeville is a form of entertainment agreeable' to the general public because it includes so many varying forms. There is the short play, the musical monologue, the singing and dancing in' their different phases, acrobatics, music from every character of instrument and in fact, the whole amusement gamut is run. The soldier sketch at the Murray the latter end of the week is interesting because of its Kiplingesque character and its ability to entertain without the inclusion of the "deadly female." It is, in short, a man's play, in the little, and that it makes an effect goes to point a theatrical moral or two.

This story of an artist's despair while working on Garrick's iiortniit is often printed, but it is reproduced in -David Garrick and nis French Friends. with a footnote saying that the exjerience was made the mnterial for a French vaudeville sketch: It was n- easy task to transfer to the canvas features so changeable. Gar rick, as a model, threw painters into! despair. Let us listen a moment to Northcote relating Sir Josbuu Reynolds' experiences: 5 "When the artist had worked on the face till he had drawn it very correctly, as he saw it at the time. Gnrrick caught an opportunity, while the painter was not looking at him. totally t0 chance his countenance and expressionf wnen the poor painter patiently I woruea on xo nuer me picture uuu make It like what he then saw. and when Garrick perceived that it was! thus altered he seized another opportunity and changed hi countenance to a third character, which, when the poor tantalized artist perceived, he, in a great rage, threw down his palette and pencils on the floor, saying he believed he was painting from the devil and would do no more to the picture." Creating a Vacancy. When the republic bad been set up In France In 1848. wrote the Baroness Bonde, the first attempts or tbe enfranchised people to use their new powers resulted in the election of the most miscellaneous assembly that bad ever tried to govern a country. A member nominated from Rouen went to Paris and selected his seat He had hardly taken it when bis next neighbor turned and stared at him. The Rouen man, embarrassed, turned up his coat collar, but too late. 'Sir," said-bis lynx eyed colleague, "I believe I had the honor of sending you to the galleys for murder in 18 when I was Judge. You had strangled i the servant of the cure who had i brought you up and robbed the worthy man. Oblige me by resigning immediately."
