BY ESTHER GRIFFIN WHITE. Curious are women. Women are inclined to be anarchists They want revolution. Not evolution. 'V;-,. : . They refuse ta recognize the fact that humanity advances only by the latter. Rarely by the - former. There Is the Women's Christian Temperance Union, in instance. The writer has nothing but profound respect for this , body of women who number among their leaders .and adherents the best feminine element In this country. "Best," morally,' spiritually, intellectually and socially. - Their propaganda is a beneficent
one.
display an ignorance of the history of their own kind. It never, has been done and never will be. Because it is incomparable with the laws of the universe. Everything in the natural world is achieved through evolution and by slow stages.
Human history reneata the nrnrosa
But the only indication of progress is that of toleration.
Washington and Lincoln were both
excoriated in their day for what was termed their toleration of certain evils, or, rather, their willingness to take a

has long since been outlived a per
sonal crusade against tne liquor traffic.
But they still hold to their revolu
tionary tenets in regard to the latter.
Tney still flaunt tne red flag.
And there can be no manner of doubt that their advocacy of its entire abolition for so many years has done much to modify public sentiment to
ward that end. But they refuse to recognize that that end is being attained by evolution!' That the drink habit in both kind and degree has not the modicum of . toleration it possessed even a half century ago, nor yet twenty-five years since. As to the comparisons of a greater period of time say seventy-live or a ! hundred years ago these are so obvious that he who runs may read. It was nothing then for men to drink
themselves under the table every day in their own houses or as guests of others either alone or in parties.
Such conditions are not .now tolerated. I Fifty years hence present ones will (be almost eliminated and one hundred i years will And them a tradition. Nor is anything to be gained by the
memDers or this organization lambasting Beveridge. ' ' Two years ago when Senator Bev
eridge spoke in the Coliseum in this city a story went the rounds that he
was unfitted to appear. This is absolutely untrue. , But this statement was made by a i member of the W. C. T. U. yesterday. The facts concerning this story are these: ' A' reporter on a local paper who wished to make a record" of some sort
wrote an article to this effect. Not
that he disliked : Senator Beveridge. But Jie wanted to make a sensation.
t Youthful reporters are freauentlv
!obessed with this desire and, profes- ' slonally, it Is .legitimated That is, the desire is legitimate and .if It can be accomplished in the proper . channels, is commendable. But the reporter's discretion was not equalled by his valor. I Connected with an alleged Democratic organ it was "up to him" to i make out a bad case against the celebrated Republican. And this he did. It Is hard to nail a lie. ( Or trap a false story. Their effect is never lost. A denial never reaches the same or as large a . public as the original allegation. Somejbody will hand it on and others pass (it along and it will go down the ages and stick in history, even if obscurely. Nor is the further statement made ,by the member of this body that the
Progressives, "adopted a rotten old
platform that was used by the stand pat Republicans two years ago," true
This, presumably, may have had
reference to their declaration on tern perance. .
But the truth is that the Progressive
piatiorm declares for county option until the adoption of the initiative, ref
erendum and recall. And when the lat
ter, is accomplished the temperance auction. will be taken out of politics and can be. legislated upon on its social merits or demerits. Presumably this statement had reference only to the temperance phases since-the Progressive platform in its entirety was about as unlike the standpat Republican of any" day as light differs from the dark. The trouble with these excellent women is that they too frequently see things out of focus. At a tangent. No one ever gets anywhere through vituperation and abuse. Nor yet through a determination to see things from but one standpoint. The advances that" temperance hax made in the past half century are unbelievable and extraordinary. ... t. ,. No longer is excessive drinking tolerated in publie life. It is absolutely prohibited in many trades, businesses and occupations. What the temperance neoole want
to do is to recognize well meaning public and social efforts in Its possible form. : x ' ' And ! not . damn every effort toward the correction of an evil that has nad Ha grip on humanity since the begin ntng of time., . . No social reform was ever accomplished through sudden and revolutionary legislation. People who refuse to admit this only
revolution.
And the sooner women learn this
the sooner will they accomplish social
emancipation.
