Haste. like a railroad train, goes straight and swiftly on its way to its terminal. Hurry, like an aeroplane in a countercurrent or buffeted by head wings, goes zigzag. To illustrate: Not long ago I watched two separate gangs at work on a railroad embankment. Each gang, composed of a like number of men and teams, bad about the same number of yards of earth to more. One boss, a nervous, excitable fellow, hurried his gang by constant importunity. Alternately he urged and swore. He stewed and fretted and worried his gang. The other boss seldom spoke. He merely kept bis eyes open to see that his plans were carried out. There was bo fuss and no hurry. Yet the men and teams fell into line at the right moment I learned a few weeks afterward that the quiet man completed his job ten days in advance of the other. Haste helps. Hurry is but haphazard. It is usually the fretful mind that geeks to do things In a hurry. The trained mind hastens methodically. Speed is not necessarily determined by the number of times the wheels go around. There is such a thing as lost motion. Or the belts may be slipping. Harry merely marks time, while haste marches directly into camp. Ordinarily there is no call for either haste or hurry, but when the urge is on every force must be marshaled, and swift results are brought about by making haste. Behind the work must be the careful, predetermined plan and the resolute, resourceful mind which accurately aims the effort, but there must be no hurry. Hurry misdirects energy. Hurry makes friction. Plan your job in advance. Go at it calmly and with reserve power. Be aure you are right and then go ahead swiftly, accurately, grimly, intelligently. But, whatever you do, do not hurry. Hurry is a wasteful force. Make haste slowly. For Business and Pleasure. "What does this mean. Sam?" said Judge Brown to the prisoner, producing two razoiex one a safety, the other straight back. "Lordy. judge, don't you all know? Dat safety am fur shavin. sun. but de adder am fur social p'poses entirely, saH." Judge. Running up and down stairs sweeping and bending over making beds will not make a woman healthy c beautiful. She must get out of dcxrs, walk a mile or two every day and take Chamberlain's Tablets to improvf. her Digestion and regulate her rowels, for sale by an dealers.
Look Cut for the Women. It is an encouraging sign when women residing in a state where the right of suffrage is denied them decide to take an active part in promoting the success of a political party that stands for the best interests of all the people. The Richmond Women's Progreisive League has not been organized with the selfish purpose of fighting solely for women's suffrage; that is an Incidental In the crusade they have launched. They stand first for better government and better economic conditions, possible only through the success of the Progressive party. The day is Aot far distant when the women of Indiana will have the ballot, but before they obtain suffrage political reforms must be accomplished. A few years ago the creation of such an organization as the Richmond Women's Progressive league would have been laughed at and good naturedly but contemptuously tolerated by a big majority of the male population of this city. Today the announcement that the women of Richmond are organizing to participate in a political campaign is accepted as a matter of cours by the voters and looked upon with apprehension by the leaders of the old line parties. Only yesterday women looked upon politics with apathy. Today they are keenly Interested in the government of this country, and when a woman takes an interest in anything she will, to promote its success, work as hard as any man and, in most cases, more intelligently. Many things have occurred to arouse the women to take an active part in politics. Through an unjust tariff law ehe has had to skimp and scheme to make her household allowance purchase the necessities of life for her family; 6he has seen the household funds depleted by excessive taxes resulting from unnecessary laws and mismanagement of city and state governments; she has seen corrupt officials of the professional politician brand, turn deaf ears on her complaints against immoral conditions which menace her sons and daughters, and when she has asked for laws improving living conditions she has been told to mind her own business and get back in the kitchen where she belongs. The American woman is entirely too independent to submit to such treatment without making a vigorous protest. The Progressive party has offered her a weapon to fight for what she has been vainly asking of the political bosses and ward heelers. Do you wonder that she is Interested In the success of that party, and do you wonder why she is to be such an important factor in this campaign?
The Enquirer A larmed.
The Democratic Cincinnati Enquirer sounds a warning to its party that it is in grave danger of losing three of the most important states in the union, New York, New Jersey and Wisconsin. The Enquirer says editorially: In three important states of the Union events of the last month have produced political conditions that have not advanced the chances of the Democratic party in those states. They are all states whose political records of recent years emphasize the need of the polling of every Democratic vote for that ticket, together with strong re-enforcements from the independent voters, if they are to be carried for the state or national tickets of that party. We refer to the states of New York, New Jersey and Wisconsin, three states carried in 1892, but lost to Democracy in every national contest since that time. Wisconsin's Republican pluralities of 102,612 in 1896, of 106,581 in 1900, of 156,057 in 1904, of 76,195 In 1908, in a total vote not averaging 400,000, even in the face of a divided opposition, makes it necessary for the holding of the Democratic lines intact and the prevention of a massing of the opposition vote upon either of the other candidates if the state is to be carried. While it is evident that both the Progressives and Republicans are preparing for a hot light in that 6tate, there are also indications that the Progressives and the Socialists are to obtain a certain percentage of strength from the Democrats, and a situation has recently been created In the state that promises to greatly increase the difficulties of the Democrats in the campaign. In New York there are many complications in state politics that even now are causing anxiety to the Democratic managers. As yet they do not create any alarm as to the outcome in that state, but their possible dangers are fully recognized and their tendencies toward undesirable friction, dissensions, resentments and antagonisms, open or secret, are not unknown. The senatorial primaries in New Jersey, occurring on September 25, will probably produce notable results. Whether ex-Senator Smith Is beaten in these primaries or whether he is victorious, the effect of the primaries cannot fail to have a profound effect upon the Democratic forces in that state, and probably in other states. The defeat of Smith at these primaries will scarcely add votes to the party in November, as far as New Jersey is concerned, while a victory for Smith at the primaries there will certainly produce an interesting situation in the state and nation. The Democratic party In New Jersey would have more harmonious relations If these senatorial primaries could be held after the presidential election.

The French Academy of Sciences In 1729 examined the cae of a French lad only neven years old who. in all respects save that of Intelligence, was the equal of a man of twenty. His remarkable physical development began when he was two years old. At four he could do the farm work of a boy of ! fifteen or sixteen, and at seven he was a fully grown man. Although his physique was thus remarkably developed, his Intelligence was no greater than that of children of the same age. He died before he was twenty. As I uual in such cases of premature development, his strength faded away, and he became prematurely old before other men would attain maturity.
