STRATTAN TO HEAD

CREDIT COMPANY! Reported that Former Richmond Man Will Be President of Corporation. S. S. Strattan, secretary of the M. Itumely company, and former president of the Gaar-Sco'tt company, this city, may be elected president of the Agricultural Credit company, of Mill-j brook, Duschess county, N. Y., a con- j cern recently incorporated in New York state with a capital stock of $4,000,000. The company will deal in the paper of agricultural implement, companies. The directors of the new concern are George F. Henry, Elisha Walker and Henry Bronner, of New York city; John D. I.arkin, of Buffalo, and S. S. Strattan. Mr. Strattan and Dr. K. A. Rumely, officials of the M. Rumely company, were in New York this week attendlngto the details of the incorporation. The incorporators are bankers of New York city, and Mr. Larkin is head of the big soap concern that bears his name, and is also a heavy holder of M. Rumely stock. An article that has real merit should in time become popular. That such is the case with Chamberlain's Cough Remedy ha3 been attested by many dealers. Here is one of them. H. W. Ilendrickson, Ohio Falls, Ind., writes, "Chamberlain's Cough Remedy Is the best for coughs, colds and croup and is my be3t seller." For sale by till dealers. DO NOT BE A LEANER. Learn to Be Self Reliant and Strong and Original. rower is the goal of every worthy ambition, mid only weakness comes from imitation or dependence on other, says Orison Swett Marden in Success Magazine. Fower is self developed, self generated. We cannot increase the strength of our muscles by sitting in a gymnasium and letting another exercise for us. Nothing else so destroys the power to stand alone as the habit of leaning upon others. If you lean you will never be strong or original. Stand alone or bury your ambition to be somebody in the world. The man who tries to give his children a start in the world so that they will not have so hard a time as ho had is unknowingly bringing disaster upon them. What he calls giving them, a start will probably give them a setback in the world. Young people need all the motive power they can get. They are naturally leaners, imitators, eopiers, and it is easy for them to develop into echoes or imitations. They will not walk alone while you furnish crutches: they will lean upon you just as long as you will let them. One of the greatest delusions that a hum:m being could ever have is that be is permanently benefited by continued assistance from others. Napoleon at Waterloo. The question. "Was Napoleon himself at the battle of Waterloo?" does not admit of a flat answer. He was not himself physically. The dread disease of which six years later he died was at work upon him. and the phys leal decay, while it in no way affected his mind, told heavily upon his will. It was, for instance, observed that during his last campaign he was often found to be in a sleepy mood, that he talked instead of acting, that he frequently asked for the opinions of others, a thing that he had rarely been known to do before, and that he seemed quite often to waver in his resolution, whereas he had always been nat0 ed for the rapidity of his decisions. Mentally it was the same old Napoleon, but the great intellect was sorely handicapped by the stomach trouble that was so soon to kill him. New York American. WOMEN, AVOID 1 OPERATIONS 'Many Unsuccessful And Worse Suffering Often Follows. Mrs. Rock's Case A Warning. The following letter from Mrs. Orvilla Hock will show how unwise it is for women to submit to the dangers of a surgical operation when often it may be avoided by taking Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. She was four weeks in the hospital and came home suffering worse than before. Here is her own statement. Paw Paw, Mich.-"Two years ago I Buffered very severely with a displace ment I could not be on my feet for a long time. My physician treated me for several months withsa out much relief and at last sent me to Ann Arbor for an operation. I was there four weeks and came home suff eringworse than before. M y mother advised me to "try Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, and I did. Today I am well and strong and do all my own housework. I owe my health to Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and advise my friends who are afflicted with any female complaint to try it" Mrs. ORVTLLE JIock, R. R. No. 5, Paw Paw, Michigan. If you are ill do not drag along until an operation is necessary, but at once take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. For thirty years it has been the standard remedy for women's ilia, and has restored the health of thousands of suffering women. Why don't you try it?

At the Gennett. Both in novel and play form the success of "Camille" or "La Dame Camelias," by Alexander Dumas, the younger, which is playing a motion picture engagement at the Gennett this week, has been world-wide and l?rennial. The popularity of the story increases with the years. "Camille" is no fantastic romance; it is a cross section of life; a human document; the true story of a lovely, loving woman who lived, who adored and who died. Marguerite Gauthier i was not an imaginary person. In life she was Marie Duplessis and in 1845 she was the reigning beauty of Paris and the toast of all the clubs. She was remarkable for her exquisite luxury, her dazzling beauty and a certain ' nobility of character combined with natural distinction. Her manner was natural; she bore an air of innocence and no grande dame was more the i lady than she. The Size of Bolivia. Native Africans Believe They Are a Part of Themselves. The shadow is the recognized portion of man nmoug modern African peoples. In West Africa the natives told Dr. Nassau that it was ossibIe for a hu man beinj; to have his shadow stolen I or otherwise lost and for fm to exist I In a diseased or dying statv. In this case hi.s body would cast no shadow. The same authority says there is a widespread belief among the natives I in a dual soul, which consists of a spirit which, as far as is known, lives forever iu the world of spirits, aud a shadow, which for an uncertain length of time hovers around the mortal remains. Here we seem to have confusion between the spirit body aud tbe shadow of a man. The shadow, according to Miss Kingsley, is one of the four souls of man. She noticed that men would march hnppily enough through the forest or grass land on a blazing morning, but when j they came to a piece of open ground they would go around it. not across U. j because they were afraid of losing i tbeir shadow. They only do this at noontime. j un asking some tsaKwin wny iney 1 "aid 'tlfi; were not anxious about losi souls at night time, she was at night all shadows lay down in the Ehadow of the great God and so became stronger. BUYING A MULE. Noise and Abuse a Part of the Transaction In Alfiiers. Americans who travel iu eastern lands are amused as well as aggravat 1 ed by the business methods which prevail there. A recent traveler in Algiers concluded to buy a mule aud finally found one for sale. He went to the owner with an interpreter, and a dialogue then ensued as follows: The interpreter, with n yell: "I will give you $10 for that mule." The Arab: "Ten dollars! Murder: Thief! Brigand:" The interpreter: "1 will make it $11. Do you bear, you scoundrel? I offer you 11 for your old mule, which will die in about a week. You are a roMer and a thief to take that much, but I am a generous man. and I serve a great man, so I offer you $11, you scum of Africa:" Then they both yelled and shook their fists at each other, and to the American it looked as if they were goins for each other hammer and tongs. The row they made was terrible, but no one seemed to notice it Finally a bargain was struck, and then they fell upon each other's neck and embraced. And the American got his mule for $11.
