FOUR BANDITS BOB A SOUTHERN TRAIN Mail Clerks Bound, Then All the Registered Mail Taken by Thieves. National News Association) MEMPHIS, Tenn., Sept. 17. Four bandits held up and robbed the New York & Memphis fast mail and express on the southern railway at Stevens Gap, Ala., at 1:50 o'clock this morning,
bound the four mail clerks and got away with all the registered letters and valuable registered mall. Postoffice authorities at Memphis say this sort of mail is . very heavy and the loss will reach $300,000. The express ond passengers were not molested nor was a single shot fired. When the train stopped at Stevens Gap for coal one bandit rapped on the mail car door, saying, "Open it, this is McMahon, the conductor." Instantly the door slid back and the mail clerk looked into the barrel of a revolver. One bandit jumped into the car and ordered all hands up. x James Flint, one of the mail clerks attempted to pick up a Winchester rifle near him and the bandit told him quietly to "forget It and fall in line." Flint with his co-workers, Frank Hamlet, John Bruce and L. E. Powers were lined up against the side of the car. One bandit tied their hands and
feet and gagged their mouths os they could not call for help.
Three bandits stood guard. Before th registered mail was found the train started. It ran about fifteen miles when one of the men pulled the train cord applying the air brakes and bringing the train to a stop. Taking three sacks of registered mail the robbers jumped off and escaped. ' When Conductor McMahon came forward he saw the mail car door open. Looking inside he found the mail clerks bound. They were released and the train proceeded to Huntsville, Ala., vhere a posse was organized and sent back to the scene. The posse haB a rack of bloodhounds. Conductor McMahon said the men vrere undoubtedly professionals. They went about their business cool and deliberately without firing a shot or disturbing the passengers in the sleeper.
QUARTERLY REPORTS MRNJISCUSSED Representatives Find Fault With Spiritual Condition of Some Meetings.
Glen Miller Park Bear Is Re- ; covering f rom -Wound.-- , The health of Bosco. the Glen Miller park bear, has improved. His complete recovery is only a matter of time. . He has ceased tearing his flank with his teeth and claws. It Is believtT that a, foreign substance, perhaps a fish hook given him in a fish, was responsible for his attempt at self-de-itruction. This is the theory advanced by Park Superintendent Hollarn, and thought feasible by the Cincinnati Eoo authorities from whom advice was asked. Bosco will be fed roots and herbs and sulphur and molasses until he recovers. The services of a veterinarian were suggested by the Zoo authorities at Cincinnati, but Superintendent Hollarn doubts if he can secure a local veterinarian who would enter the cage, trim Bosco's claws, remove his teeth, and attend the wound In his side. No fish will hereafter be fed the bear.
