FAIRV1EW CLUB 111
ITS FIRST COHTEST torganization Holds Its First Meet Saturday Afternoon Good Scores. Hie first shoot of the "Sore-Shoul der shooting club of Fairvlew was held Saturday afternoon north of the city near the Thiatlethwaite falls, resulting In a few broken birds, black eyes, bruised shoulders and ruined lips. The club has secured several new members, and will have another shooting match at the elusive clay birds next Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. All who wish to shoot are urged to be present. The only requirements are that the shooter furnish his own ammunition and gun, and pay the cost of the birds, ' cent each. The shoot Saturday afternoon re sulted in first place being taken by Ray Robbins, with the high score of 23 out of a possible 25. The other members made the following scores: Jack Thomas, 19 out of 25; George Burkhart, 18 out of 25; James Reed and Chester Burdsall each 15 out of 25; Dora Wampole, 14 out of 25; Emil Weist, 6 out of 25, and Herschel Fuller 2 out of twenty-five. The feature of the shoot was a I double by Weist with one shot. He i broke a clay bird and at the same time 'knocked down and killed an adventur.ous swallow who came too near the i trap. A negro, purporting to be a marshal ifrom Spring Grove evidently desiring 'to show his authority attempted to ! break up the shoot, and telephoned for the police to come and "bag the (bunch of 'em as it will be easy money." ;He met with small consideration from 'the police who told him the meet was authorized by the owner of the land. ?The negro then wandered down near !tho trap, but hearing some hostile ref marks and noticing gun muzzles wav;ering in his general direction accom panied by a few remarks, stuck his tin badge under his coat and with an auxiliary evidently to assist in his attempt, hot footed it back to the classic outlines of Spring Grove. A Lesson from Our Ancestors In the good old fashioned days of our grandmothers they depended upon the root3 and herbs of the field to relieve 'disease. Years have passed by, but science (has never been able to improve upon 'the medicinal effects of these same roots and herbs which are Nature's cure for disease. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable ComI pound, that successful remedy for female ills, had its origin in this way and today tons of roots and herbs are Vionsumed annually in making it. Vaudeville Matinee and Night Sept. 22 Carl Morris. Gennett Theater. Sept. 16 Bernhardt in "Camille," motion pictures. Sept. 30. Sousa's band. Coliseum. October 4 Inness band. Carl Morris. Carl Morris, of New York, who will appear in song recital in the Murray theatre on Sunday afternoon, September 22nd, is a native of Indiana who is rapidly becoming known as one of the leading oratorio singers in this country. His appearance at the last May Festival here was one of the successes of that event and so many people have expressed a desire to hear him in a varied program, that his advent hero Sunday will be welcomed with pleasure. The Murray theatre was selected for the recital on account of its more comfortable seating and because of its central location. The plat for reserved seats, without extra charge, will open Thursday morning at ten o'clock in the Murray box office. The Murray. The Murray will again present two tills this week after the week of Gus Sun's Minstrels whij was an unusually successful engagement for the beginning of the theatrical vaudeville season since the excessive heat of September is attended by a laxness in interest by theatre-goers. This week will be started with a varied program which includes a comedy sketch called "Crackers and Cheese" and which is one of the clever skits of its sort now being presented in vaudeville. On Thursday afternoon there will be a complete change of bill. The Gennett. The motion pictures to be seen at the Gennett this week, beginning with those of Bernhardt in "Camille" and also presenting Madame Rejane in ' Madame Sans Gene" should be seen by everybody. Here is an opportunity to see two of the greatest French actresses of international reputation in two of their best known roles. For these pictures are actual transcripts of the stage presentations for which both Bernhardt and Rejane posed with members of their companies. Those who have never seen Bernhardt but who have seen "Camille" by other actresses, either well known or more or less obscure, can here embrace the opportunity of comparison, for Bernhardt's acting is great in pantomime and this method of acting will give as good an idea of her art as the presentment in person. Madame Rejane, who made "Madame Sans Gene" the washer-woman sweetheart of the Emperor Napoleon famous on two continents, will be as interesting in her motion picture play. Altogether this is an opportunity that should not be missed. COAL FOR LIBRARY. Proposals to furnish coal for Mor-risson-Reeves Library will be received up to noon of Tuesday, September 17, at the Library. Best No. 4 Anthracite, 30 tons to be delivered soon, and 30 tons, more or less, as may be needed, to be delivered after January 1, 1913. 14-2t Vegetable Gluttons. Sundews, common in English marshes, are sufficiently knowing to distinguish between various substances presented to them. Offer them a nice scrap of tender beef, and in a couple of hours they will have concealed it from sight. Try them with a piece of chalk or a tiny pebble, and they remain stolidly immovable. Wet the chalk and offer it again, and the plant apparently mistakes it for meat, the bristles gradually closing round it; then, discovering the deception, they gradually relax and return the chalk without thanks. These vegetable gluttons will absorb morsels of poached eggs and mutton chops, but cheese turns the leaves quite black and finally kills them. His Prescription. Boerhaaxe. the greatest doctor of bis time, was anxious that it should go forth that even the most eminent doctor is somewhat of a "humbug." He carefully handed the key of a small diary to his executor, bade him open it Immediately after his decease and let the contents go forth to the world at large. When the notebook was opened all its pages but the last were blank, and on that final one there was written In large letters "Directions to Patients: Keep your feet warm and your head cool and trust for tUe rest to Provi de'

ODD FELLOWS AHIIUAUflTHERIIIG High Officials Present at Opening of Annual Communication of Order.
National Xews Association) WINNIPEG,. Man., Sept. 16. Cameron, the lieutenant-governor of Manitoba, acted as master of ceremonies. Sir Redmond Roblin delivered the address of welcome on behalf of the Prcvinco ind Mayor Waugh spoke for the City of Winnipeg. Other greetings were extended in behalf of the Mani toba grand lodge, the Patriarchs Mili tant and the Rebekah assembly. The response to the greetings was mads by Grand Sire Cockrum of Indianapolis. At the conclusion of the opening j formalities the delegates adjourned to Convention hall, where the sovereign grand lodge went into session behind closed doors. The gathering will continue through the entire week. Lavish preparations have been made to entertain the visitors and every minute of the time allotted to the convention is to be taken up with lodge discussions, drills, dances or entertainments. HOW TO WASH CURTAINS. Valuable Suggestions That Will Save Fabric and Trouble. There are many convenient ways for washing and drying the most delicate of curtains. The white ones may be placed in a thin bag and washed with soap and water, rinsed and slightly starched while still in the bag, and squeezed as dry as possible, then spread on a clean sheet, either tacked to the floor or stretched between lines. The curtains are gently pulled in chape, the points pulled out and then left until dry. For the finest and somewhat worn ecru curtains the following method is a favorite: The curtains are shaken free from dust and then put in a bag. But this time a few quarts of cornmeal, wet with gasoline, Is put in the bag with the lace. The whole is rubbed and kneaded together and left as it is until the next day. Then the bag Is taken out of doors, the curtains removed and shaken clear of the meal and hung on the line until free of the odor. They will then look fresh and clean and will still have the rich ecru color. Colored madras curtains may also be cleaned by this process. The heavier curtains and draperies of scrim may be washed in warm water with soap, rinsed and starched in the usual way. Even those stenciled with paints and aniline dyes may receive this plebeian treatment. The ecru and cream tinted ones may be colored by putting tea or coffee in the rinsing water and dilute starch or dry yellow ocher (obtained at paint shop for a few cents), may bo added to the starch until the right shade is obtained. To make, a smooth, thin starch of these, mix half a cupful of starch with half a cupful of cold water until smooth, then add a gallon of boiling water, stirring constantly. A stretcher Is best to dry these heavier curtains on. There are wooden frames adjustable to any size of curtain, and several curtains may be dried at once on a single stretcher. Ironing is usually unsuccessful on any style of curtain, the size and open loose mesh of the article making it difficult to keep from stretching out of shape.. Wrestling seems to be an international siort. but oue of the most curious styles to be seen is probably that of the Swiss. There is generally an immense meeting of tbe wrestlers every year, called the "swingerfest," meaning literally tlie "festival of j swinging," and to this festival come the mountain men from all parts of Switzerland. It takes place in an immense arena, generally four or six couples wrestling at tbe same time, with stands around for tbe audience. The men .who are wrestling each wear a pair of short knickers, very loosely worn, and made of some stout material, with a leather belt at the top to strap it on round the waist, over their costume, and the ideu is to catch their opponents by these knickers and throw them. Hoth shoulders must touch the ground, and the men are not allowed to hold their opponents except by the knickers. Of course it is mainly a question of brute strength, and on neurly all occasions the mountain men prove the better of the townsmen. Very often a man will throw his opponent clean over his shoulder through the air. and when one considers that this must be done only by gripping a piece of sailcloth or such like material in either hand, at the height of a man's loins, some idea can be gathered of the marvelous strength shown on these occasions. Value of Friendship In Business. The salesman who was formerly intent on getting orders by meaus of the "happy da.vs" system of cigars and drinks now courts the friendship of his customers ou utilitarian lines. He tries to make suggestions that will Ik of use. He essays an idea or drops a piece of news intended to do the customer some good. Not infrequently an expert salesman will study the methods of a customer and even the methods in use in his establishment before approaching him. so as to be in a position to talk intelligently on his needs and perhaps spring a new idea that will attract attention. Then the customer is liable to be indebted to him in a friendly way. which is the better way of securing a man's business and holding it. Hrolf Wlsby in Leslie's. CASTOR I A For Infants and Children. HOW TO MAKE A GOOD LAWN
Select Day When Wind Will Not Blow Seed. There Is surely nothing more beautiful than a fine green lawn and really not so difficult a thing to obtain If gone about in the right way. The proper way to start is after the lawn has been graded to put In it a top soil of at least six inches and have a gradual sloping grade for drainage, or. if the ground is low and damp, it will be best to lay dram pipes from two ta three feet below its surface. Soil that is rich is very often acid, which 'can be corrected by applying ail slaked lime in sudicient quantity to correct the acidity. With sandy soil the question of fertility is of prime Importance, after the grading. The entire area should be covered with well rotted manure. Where this is not possible a chemical fertilizer should be used. After this fertilizer has thoroughly mellowed the soil and a smooth surface has been secured it is then time to sow. A day should be selected when the wind will not blow the seed. In an ordinary open lawn a good mixture is Tod pratensls mixed with Agnostis ncamna. For under the trees where it 19 difficult to secure any kind of a lawn the ground should be covered with myrtle or hedera ivy. After the seed has been sown the ground should be raked and gone over with a heavy roller until perfectly level. Wheu the grass Is three to four Inches high It should be cut with a scythe until strong enough to bear the mower. Should any bare spots appear these must be made mellow and again seeded down. The best season for making a lawn is immediately after the spring rains end before the heat of the summer tends to dry out the ground. In the treatment of old lawns that bave become poor through a lack of fertility the best and in the end the cheapest thing to do is to plow them up and cover with manure and construct about the same as a new lawn. A lawn requires the use of a heavy roller in the spring after the early rains and again about June and September. During the summer dry spell, when the lawn is built shallow or with insufficient drainage, it must be watered artificially. Other than the usual cutting with the lawn mowers there is no other care necessary unless it should be covered iu December with manure and after the spriug rains have washed , the nutriment into the soil to have till manure removed. HOW NATURE REPAYS.
The Loss of One Sense Seems to Bring Added Power te the Others. Wheu the third question put to tbe girl who was tinting a customer's hair a fashionable shade elicited no reply the woman turned to tbe manager of tbe beautjr shop and said: "What Is tbe matter with that girl, anyhow? Is she deaf?" "Very nearly." said the manager. TIow does she hold her place?" said the woman. "It seems to me that a person employed In a place like this stands in need of her fire senses.' "That Is Just what they do not need." was the reply. "If one sense is lacking tbe other four make np for tbe deficiency and become the more valuable because more acute.
