Julie Ring Tonight. Julie Ring, the charming comedienne who will be seen at the Gennett this evening in the delightful muEical comedy "The Yankee Girl," comes naturally by her genuine comedy talent. She was reared in the environs of the theater, as her ancestors for three generations were thespians and the family holds a conspicuous place in the history of the stage. Her grandfather, James H. Ring, was principal comedian for thirty years at the old Boston Museum and he is remembered to this day by many of the old time theatergoers. Miss Ring is one of the famous three Ring sisters (Julie, Blanche and Frances); each of them now heads a separate company and are favorites from coast to coast. Julie Ring made her debut when a mere child and immediately won recognition. After playing child parts for three years her parents sent her to Europe to be ' educated and take a course of musical training. I COLLEGE ENTRY BLANKS ARE READY High school is beginning to take on a busy aspect. The enrollment of pupils for the fall semester has started, and 500 pupils have enrolled to date. It is expected that over 700 will be enrolled and ready for work when school opens Monday, September 16. All graduates of the Richmond High school desiring to enter college should call at the office of Principal Neff before the expiration of the next two weeks, and secure college entry blanks. The blanks may be procured at any time. This should be attended to this week, Mr. Neff said, but it may be attended to in the week beginning September 23. . . tist of exceptional ability and this, in conjunction with her native wit and bewitching feminine beauty created a great demand for her services and managers vied with one another in their endeavor to get her signature to a contract. Since that time Miss Ring has been a prominent factor in New York musical productions. In "The Yankee Girl" she plays "Jessie Gordon," a wholesouled American girl who finds herself in a Southern republic and in the absence of her father she protects his business interests from a conspiring Japanese. Miss Ring has a number of songs to sing that are particularly suited to her. The Murray. Tom Powell, manager and principal comedian of Gus Sun's minstrels which are playing a full week's engagement at the Murray this week, is one of the best actors of his class on the vaudeville stage. Powell has a manner of his own and certain characteristics of personality which are not obscured by his black face disguise which, oftener than not, makes all entertainers of this class more or less alike. He has an insinuating way across the footlights in his monologue num bers which is hilariously funny and j has this season an entirely new reper- j toire of jokes and mirth-producing stunts. "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm." Klaw & Erlanger's "Rebecca of Sun nybrook Farm," by Kate Douglas Wiggin and Charlotte Thompson, under the direction of Joseph Brooks, has scored an enormous hit at the Globe j Theater, London. The American company which played or one season at ' Belasco's Republic Theater and an- j other year in the leading cities of the : United States, was taken abroad, j Edith Taliaferro scored a triumph as ; Rebecca and quickly won the hearts of her first English audience. Ellen Terry, who was present, wiped her eyes with a dainty handkerchief, and even men sniffled furtively and wiped their eyeglasses. Kate Douglass Wlggin, the authoress who occupied a box with Mme. De Navarro (Mary Anderson), came before the curtain after the fourth act, evi dently in a condition of great nervousness, and bowed her thanks. Her lips moved as if she were speaking, but no words were audible amid the din of applause. The applause was redoubled when she came gefore the curtain a ! second time, holding Edith Taliaferro by th hand, and then drawing the little actress into a fervent embrace. The Telegrapn, which wields an enormous influence among the theatregoers of London, has this to say of the performance : "Miss Taliaferro never tried to be more than a child, and that is the secret of her perfsct success. She never insisted that she was charming, as even children will do sometimes, and so she conquered. When she was quaint she did not advertise it; when she was happy she kept the peace; so we had a rare piece of work. Not to have seen it would be the loss of a simpie perfect pleasur1 -

A GREAT RAILROAD SYSTEMJOW OPEIl South American Line Will Be One of Most Important in the World.

BY JONATHAN WINFIELD. WASHINGTON, Sept. 11. Yesterday there was held, at the little town of Villa Bella in central South Amer ica, a celebration of which the wrold in general will probably hear little, but which will be of immense importance to nearly all parts of the civilized globe, particularly those portions interested in the use and greater production of rubber. The celebration marked the completion of the Madeira-Mamore Railway, a little line only 230 miles in length, lying a thousand miles from the nearest rails with which it could possibly e connected; but it is no unwarranted statement to say that this little railway will carry on its roadbed more traffic and do more to develop an area almost boundless in extent than the ..0,000 miles of the "Cape to Cairo" railroad in Africa and the projected Pan-American line in this hemisphere put together. The Maderia-Mamore Railway, now completed after years of hard work and defiance of all dangers of the trackless jungle, is intended to tap the heart of the South American continent, to provide an outlet to thousands of productive but unapproachable acres and to bring into contact with commerce from across the seas

Truly an immense territory to be brought into contact with world commerce by a railroad comparatively small and insignificant. A line of this size anywhere in the United States, already honeycombed by vast trunk lines from coast to coast, would make but little difference in South America it will mean the addition of millions upon millions of dollars of internal revenue and the addition to the wealth of the world of billions of dollars in valuable produce. For this railway will tap the very heart of the South American continent. It is destined to make the names of Bolivia, Peru and Brazil well known In the markets of the world after the tin of the first, the copper of the second and the diamonds of the third are forgotten. The mineral wealth of all three republics may be exhausted, but their agricultural resources will increase as time goes on and the land becomes more accessible. Rub ber, cocoa, coffee, sugar, cinchona, cotton and the citrus trees all thrive abundantly in this garden spot of the world all would be inaccessible were it not for the railway which American genius and capital has completed. The finished railway measures 236 miles (330 kilometers) and runs from Porto Velhao on the Madeira river to Villa Bella on the frontier of Bolivia, and, under an extension planned comporatively recently, somewhat further into that republic. one afflicted with It to remain in the country.

Contrary to the general belief, the dangers of the jungle are not so great as are those of the open river. Jaguars of a huge size have been killed by a number of the expeditions, but always by hunting parties, and there is no record of the big cats ever having attacked the workmen. Snakes, of all sizes and venom, abound in the underbrush or hang from the trees and snakebites are the commonest kind of accidents. Swimming is one sport which is absolutely taboo in this section, because of the presence, in large numbers, of the electric eels and the pyranha a fish with rows of needlelike teeth, ravenously bloodthirsty and agressive, which attacks in large numbers and literally tears its victims to pieces. Several men have suddenly disappeared while swimming for shore and it is not known by which they were attacked the electric eel or the pyranha. For a number of years the principal product of the land opened up by the new railway was rubber. Large numbers of castraanha trees, from which comes the well-known "Brazil nut" al so abound in this section and will add much to Its traffic. Some pioneer settlers have already cleared small areas near the railroad and are raising maize and mandioca, from which is made the Brazilllan staff of life. farina. A superior quality of tobacco is also raised just below the mouth of the Madeira by an American named Stone who has lived in this section of Brazil for over forty years. There is litUe left In South America unvisited by the frontiersman, but there are huge areas of plain and forest which until now, could not be reached, on account of the natural Im pediments to the settler and agriculturalist. But this new railway will wipe out many af these difficulties to commerce. A mighty romance of in du8trial life was brought to a close. when, on September 7th. trade and commerce found an easy road along the short 230 miles of the Madeira Mamore railway, the key to the richest section of the New World.
